-- On April 12, 2012, Nan Jing City Flower Temple Community Service center welcomed the representatives of the national civil public service to their observation. The Ministry of Civil Affairs Minister Li LiGuo, governor of Jiangsu province Li Xueyong, Nanjing Municipal Party Committee secretary Yang WeiZe, and other representatives came to visit and observe the site. Vice minister Jiang Li, discussed Light of Love’s "Young Old Romance" project, which was organized by student Dai Xianwei, and listened to the details. At the end, the executive director of One Foundation, Chinese Public Welfare Research Institute Executive Director, and the former Executive Chairman Miss Zhou all gave Dai Xianwei tips and guidance. This conference served the purpose of providing a clear direction for implementing and developing a program to provide for uncared senior citizens, and also reflected my school's emphasis and focus on repaying society and obtaining a good reputation with the leaders of the country. Ms. Zhou focuses on mental and psychological counseling for woman in rural areas. In this article, she writes about her mountain peregrination with a girl she is counseling, and an encounter with a poor shepherd.
-- When doing public service, one must serve with a loving heart. I told this story before: there was this high school girl who had a lot of pressure from studying, as well as a high self-esteem and a bad relationship with her mother which led to her obsessive-compulsive disorder. One of her friends introduced her to a downtown psychiatrist treatment center, and within four months, spent about 30,000 RMB (~4,800 USD). By chance, the director of the women in the town recommended my counseling and she was able to find me. The first time when we met, she told me that she could not go to her school classes, and even at home she felt extremely unhappy, irritated, and anxious because of this situation. So far we have only met 4 times, and after the second time we met, her parents called and happily said: "This time we are on the right path! Our whole family has hope now!" Yesterday was the weekend and the girls asked if she could see me. I told her mother to let her take the bus to come to the hillside to find me. Now is that season where the grass green, flowers are blooming, and I believe that nature would be a much better place than my counseling office. Since we will be going up the mountain, I was a little concerned about the safety issue. So I sent my husband to scout ahead of us and also take pictures for us as well. As we walked down the road, there were rows of pines, fully bloomed apricots, and I talk to her about nature, life, and her future. We found a smooth place to sit down and I asked her take out the homework I gave to her titled “My Dream." I had her read it out loud in front of the mountain and the nature, along with a passionate voice, appropriate language. The way everything fit together and her description of her dream really touched me. It was as if I could see her dream become reality already! How is it that this girl needs to take medicine? She's fine the way she is! Little Red Scarf CARE manages poverty relief programmes in rural China, Gangsu. -- Recently, because of my poor health, I was not able to go to the countryside. And even while I have to do infusion therapy, I also have to prepare my next segment of work. I sit in bed with a computer on my lap, doing a series of courseware and organizing the files of many visitors. These files include mental health knowledge training courseware, children's education, interpersonal communication skills, prenatal care, and early childhood. After I finish, if there is any public service team in need of this, I am completely open for service and can help them! -- Original Article translated by ShiShi Ma, edited by US intern Kevin Mo. Liu from Light of Love Philanthropy introduced everyone how the donations will be delivered to the children and showed pictures of last year’s project. He gave thanks to his colleagues of class 09465 on behalf of the kids. After the ceremony, Light of Love members stored the donations, which they will distribute to the kids this summer. This event demonstrates a sense of social responsibility of college students. It also presents a new way to encourage donations in the future. How are all the teachers at LRS? Thank you for calling me every once in awhile. I am very touched. Because I have been staying at home, I thought LRS would forget about me. But you all remember me. I am not going to school right now. Same as before, my leg starts to hurt when I walk for long periods of time. Dad is still working at the factory that breaks rocks, trying to save money for my club foot surgery. Teacher, do you think I can ever walk like normal people do? When I go get my surgery, can I come visit you at the cardiology department? I have been very bored at home. Mom and dad would not let me work; they are very careful with me. It will have been a year by May. They said that I could start working after a year. Sometimes I make my mom mad at home, but I really don’t do it on purpose. At school, my classmates laugh at me for being a cripple. I cannot participate in school-organized activities. So, I don’t like going to school anymore, but it’s scary to not know anything. If my club foot surgery succeeds, I still want to go back to school. Do you think I can do it? When I’m bored, can I write to you or text you? Are there still a lot of kids in LRS? Hope your work goes well and take care! (Teacher, when you receive the letter, please call me and let me know, so I won’t worry.) Sincerely yours, Cong Xia 03/27/2012 Note: XiaXia is a patient who received aid from LRS in 2011. She found out that she had congenital heart disease when she was being treated for club foot (congenital talipes equinovarus, a congenital deformity involving one foot or both. The affected foot appears rotated internally at the ankle). The parents got XiaXia to have surgery on her heart immediately. After the surgery, XiaXia recovered well. The LRS office has been in touch with her, encouraging her to feel confident again. Due to her club foot, which makes XiaXia look severely crippled while walking, she cannot take part in school activities. Low self-esteem led her to give up on school. But we send XiaXia our best wishes and hope that she can successfully receive club foot surgery. Then she would be able to go back to school, to an environment that fosters her growth. Hemophilia Home of China, founded in September in 2009, in an NGO that provides treatment and financial aid for hemophiliac patients. If children with hemophilia can receive early intervention, many of them can enjoy the same health as normal children. Unfortunately, hemophilia treatment is extremely expensive; many families, especially rural families, cannot afford treatment for children. To learn more about Hemophilia Home of China, click here.
Yesterday afternoon at 2 PM, I went to the Beijing Children’s Hospital to check on Little Shou Hao who was recently supported by Hemophilia Home of China. I only spend about 30 minutes on the road and reached the hospital quickly. I contacted Hemophilia Home of China’s employee Yin Lu, and we went to the ICU where Little Shou Hao was staying. There was a time limit, so Yin Lu went into the room and got some pictures of Little Shou Hao and his mother, and talked discussed his surgery with the doctor. The doctor said he still needed to do the infusion with postoperative care. I heard from the doctor that Little Shou Hao’s mother would come to the hospital gate every early morning and wait for to see her child, no matter whether she was able to see him or not, she would be there all the time, every day the same, and would leave once he had gone to sleep. It really made me feel the mother's love for her own child, it was very touching. After that, I went to visit Little Shou Hao, and he called me “big brother.” His mother told me that before, he could not even speak full sentences and was only be able to say papa or mama, but after the surgery, his speech has been very clear and lucid. It appears that his surgery was a successful one! I had simple chat with his mother as well. Those nurses are kept telling me that the time limit was over, (they are quite ferocious, but I understand they are just doing their job), so I took few pictures with Little Shou Hao and his mother, introduced Little Red Scarf and Toumingyu, gave them two masks and informed them about the seriousness of air pollution in Beijing. They seemed very happy. The visit made me feel that the support of the our non-profit was greatly helpful, and feel the greatness of maternal love, and realize there are many more children that need us to care and love! Little Shou Hao's smile left a deep impression on me. Original Article written and translated by Shishi Ma, edited by intern Kaitlyn Cheung. It takes Zhang Wei about an hour to walk from home to school everyday. During the winter, he has to leave home when it is still dark out. He used to bring the food from home to school. He would wait until school is finished, then take out the cold lunchbox to eat. Now he is one of the beneficiaries of the “Loving lunch” project. Every day after school, he can eat a warm meal. When Xu Wang and the teachers got to his home, they talked with his grandmother for a while. They provided her with the details of the “Loving Lunch” project. At the same time, they hoped that she makes sure to pay attention to the kids’ overall well being. The whole time, the grandmother repeated "Thank you, thank you".
