You Fuhai has been suffering from scoliosis on the lumbar vertebra. When I saw him, he had been out of school for about one year. Most people may wonder why he dropped school. You Fuhai’s father is a blind man. All burdens of the family fell on his mother. His mother not only did field work, but also sent Fuhai to school by carrying him on her back (he cannot walk due to the nerves being pressed). It took her 1 hour to walk to school for each of the 4 trips back and forth between home and school each day. His mother is short and due to Fuhai's growth, she could not carry him on her back when he was in Grade 4. Such situation meant he could no longer attend school. It is even difficult for him to stand up straight and his two legs are not the same length. With his efforts, he manages to ride a bike. He told me he wanted to study at school. His bicycle skills enable him go through mountainous roads to school. People do have strong will to overcome difficulties, but his bike was damaged on such a road condition. He had to quit school when he could not afford the basic insurance premium at school and a new bike. The Guizhou Dandelion Volunteer Teaching Center provides a professional platform for public welfare, attracting greater resources to poverty-stricken areas, improving education, and allowing more children from rural areas to receive care. From March 26 to 29, 2013, partners from voluntary teaching camp visited 5 voluntary teaching sites and volunteer teachers. They got to know more about their lives and teaching and attended a few teachers’ classes. Original article written by Guojing Qi, translated by Maggie Li, edited by Yanyan Zhang

Honghong is a 16-year-old girl who suffers from congenital heart disease. She should have been treated in her childhood, but the family could not afford to the operation. Honghong lives in a small remote village of Gansu province with 4 family members. Her parents are mentally retarded. They make a living by farming a piece of small field. Her father had tried to work in the city, but failed. Her mother can do some simple housework. The family has been on relief from their relatives. Yurunhuanjiang Micro Public Good Alliance works with poverty-stricken families, women, children as well as empty nest elderly in Qi County of Qingyang City, Gansu Province.
By chance, I went to Huan county of Gansu province. One of reasons I visited Huan county is that I learned from CCTV that the water is precious here. People use the same water to wash face, then plates and bowls, then wash face again. I was shocked and confused. Secondly, I have seen a man with a weather-beaten face on the screen. His eyes expressed sad, helpless and deep attachment to land. It’s more than drought here. I could not see any young men here, but I saw women, old people and children in the fields. To seek better life, young men went to work in the city and many of them even chose to settle down in the city and would not come back. Lands were deserted and homes were dilapidated, helpless groups as empty nest elderly and left behind children were left to the society. Who care about their lives and spiritual world? Urbanization and endless desire for materials make people displaced and leave their homes and family members. Where is our root? In the west of China, the economy is backwards and the climate is awful. Malnutrition, poor health care, and unpurified drinking water are quite common among people living in this area. The rural children suffer from all kinds of illnesses. The undeveloped medical system aggravates this type of situation. Many families can become impoverished again by treating their children. Huang Zhengchao is 2 years old. He was born in a Zhuang ethnic minority family living in the small village of Wenshan, Yunnan province near Vietnam. He has a 13-year-old sister in secondary school and a father who works in the city. Life is not too difficult. The family even built the new house with a reconstruction project implemented by the government. When the new house was almost completed in May 2012, Zhengchao’s left eye had swollen to a massive amount. Due to the shortage of medical knowledge and negligence, his parents didn’t pay much attention to it. His left eye bulged quickly in a month. The sudden change threw his parents into panic, and the family began the 9-month journey in seeking treatment. Xi'an Alliance works to promote a spirit of volunteerism. Many student volunteers are trained to participate in public welfare activities and social work.
On March 21, 2013, a team consisting of volunteers and health workers visited the empty-nesters, elderly people without families. Under the guidance of the village chief, we stepped into the first home. Pointing to a small hut, the village chief told the health worker, “There lives a patient”. Doctor and nurses went to the hut and diagnosed the old man. The chief introduced the family: three single, old men who make livings by farming. The 65-year-old patient is the eldest, and he has been suffering from paralysis for 10 years. He had a son who worked on a construction site in Ningxia but tragically died of a construction accident. The third brother is mentally retarded. The second brother is 62 years old but quite optimistic. He cares for the two brothers and has kept the family together for many years. The Jingjieniao Home provides services for the mentally handicapped from poverty-stricken families. The organization is dedicated to improving their spirit and living standards and advocating for every disabled individual to have adequate access to social resources
When a child leaves her home or family, she undoubtedly feels scared and unsafe in a new environment. She will be speechless or cry, running into adults' arms to ask them to take her home. This pretty girl is our new member, Xinxin. She always looks out of the window while holding her toy bear in her arms, saying, “Little bear, grandpa and grandma have gone back home. I would like to go back, too." Sometimes, she just sits without a word, looking to her little bear. Our principal held Xinxin in her arms and some older children played piano for her. We believe Xinxin will like the Jingjieniao Home and will make many friends here. In January, 2013, Hemophilia Home sent an application to World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH), hoping they could send medicine to Beijing via airmail as soon as possible. The next day, WFH sent out medicine via Federal Express. The medicine arrived at Beijing Airport on January 31, but then we were presented with new difficulties. We had to pay the high tariff and value-added tax just to accept the donation. Additionally, the medicine was close to expiring, and we had to find a solution. Our motivation lies in trying to relieve our patients' suffering. We started to find relevant sectors, but there was no progress by February 23. In desperation, we sent an e-mail to WFH and asked them to take back the medicine and send it to other countries to avoid waste, but WFH replied that we could not return the medicine. If it could not go through the customs successfully, it had to be destroyed on the spot. With this reply, we promised to make our last effort to WFH. Mianyang Public Welfare Forum is dedicated to the development of local non-profit organizations and public welfare.
On March 13th, a team of volunteers consisting of students from Southwest University of Science and Technology, Mianyang Normal University and Sichuan Chinese Medical College went to Weicheng Center Primary School. They taught children to cut window grilles with the children. The volunteers took the lead and used wasted color papers and scissors to cut window decorations. The children showed their curiosities for scissors and color papers at beginning. The volunteers taught them how to cut nice patterns by folding the paper. With further communications, the children not only opened their mind to talk, but became more fascinated on paper-cutting. In the end of the activity, each child showed their own works and was willing to share them with the volunteers. Looking at pieces of window grilles, we also felt the happiness and confidence that conveyed by their works. Original article written by Wei Zhang, translated by Maggie Li, edited by Yanyan Zhang |
