Before visiting Huzi and his family, we looked at his photos when was hospitalized 5 years ago. We tried to imagine how he looks today as a big, tall 20-year-old young man. This visit will also include the visit of his family. Five years after his surgery, Huzi is a county high school sophomore. We took off from Lan Zhou in the morning and arrived our destination 4 hours later. Normally school is over by 6pm for Huzi. Huzi called us around 3pm and told us he got permission from school so he can meet us 3:30pm at school main entrance. Seeing Huzi coming to the school main entrance on bike, I can hardly believe he is the same Huzi as in the old photo. I guess he probably noticed something different in my eyes. He came to me jokingly speaking with some shyness: "I am Huzi, didn't grow up any taller these years.”. Immediately I apologized for my rudeness. Huzi said “no problem” and the three of us all laughed. This cheerful gesture started off our pleasant get-together. Huzi rented a small room near the school. There are many such tiny rentals for students around the school. These are 2- to 4-story buildings built by farmers. In general, the facility is very simple, one bed and one table, around 10 square feet in size. Lighting is poor, need to turn on light inside the room during daytime. The rent is about 850 yuan per semester. There are some cooking utensils and vegetables in one corner of the room and books piled up in the other corner. The room looks a little messy and crowded. Huzi has outgoing personality and very mature as well. Because his family is not well off financially, his sister working in TauYuan and send him 2 to 3 hundred yuan every few months. His father pays for the tuition about 1,000 yuan per semester. Other than that, Huzi rarely asks for money from his father. In Huzi’s class, there are 61 students total. His academic performance ranked in the middle. He said he would like to learn the skills required for a computer technician after his graduation. With this profession, he can find a job and supplement his family income. In 2011, funded by Little Red Scarf, 8-year-old Binyan was hospitalized because of congenital heart disease. The surgery was successful. We’d like to find out how has been Binyan’s life, schooling and family, 4 years after the surgery? We visited Binyan on March 17. Although Binyan’s family lives in the rural area of Gansu province, but it is not in the mountains. It is about 15 minutes away from the town nearby and the traffic is rather convenient. Binyan was in the 3rd grade at the time of surgery. She took one year off from school and now is in the 5th grade. At noon, we saw Binyan in the distance on her way back home from school. She smiled when she noticed us. Her high spirit and joyful appearance immediately encouraged all of us. Binyan told us that she recovered really well. The wound from surgery healed well and looks smooth. She feels great even under cloudy, snowing weather. She can jump rope for 160 rounds per minute in school physical education. When it comes to academic performance, she was a little shy. She was ranked 25 in a class of 46 students. English and Chinese are her favorite subjects. Binyan’s family has 8 people. Her mom suffered from schizophrenia for over a dozen years. During this time, her mom was on medication to maintain emotional stability. She usually stays at home cooking and doing laundry. Binyan’s 15-year-old elder sister was unable to keep up in school. She quit schooling after graduated from junior high and stayed at home helping house chores. Since their house is under renovation, they lived at neighbor’s house as a temporary arrangement. Binyan’s family has 5 acres of land, planted 150 pear trees, over 70 apple trees. Because her father works outside in town all the time, the farm work usually relies on her grandpa to take care. Binyan and her younger sister are in the same school. She is at a 4th grade. They go to school together and play together at home. They are 3 years apart. Her sister weighs more that Binyan. Child with congenital heart disease normally appears skinnier than their peers. At the end of each performance, they gave their greetings and blessings to the elderly. They also gave their hand-made gifts to the senior citizens who were moved by their innocence. After the performances, the host introduced the senior citizens who were born in November. The children and their parents lighted the birthday candles for them. His father and relatives were busy for hospital admission procedures. Mr and Mrs Zhao were in hospital. They took group pictures with the family. Xiao Song kept silence and was looking at us curiously. Yun Yun recorded the first impression between Little Red Scarf and Xiao Song. The procedure of rural medical insurance had not been done for Xiao Song, but the director of cardiology department helped to admit Xiao Song for further examination. The family could complete the procedures meanwhile. Xiao Song was weeping when hearing his father would leave, though his relatives would take care of him. His father decided to keep accompany to him and leave the next day for medical insurance procedures. On October 21 when I visited another child, I gave Xiao Song bracelet and badge of LRS. He was looking me nervously. His relative who took care of him told me he is Yi ethnic minority and cannot understand mandarin. He must feel at loss in a new environment. On October 22, his father came back. He seemed tired and fell asleep when holding Xiao Song who seemed relaxed in his father’s arms. Later, his father introduced the situation of the family. The family has 5 people. They are Xiao Song, his parents, younger brother and a grandmother. Xiao Song was diagnosed congenital heart disease in a village clinic when he was 2, but the family could not afford the medical treatment for him. Xiao Song’s mother and grandmother got serious arthritis and could not do field work. The main income was from tobacco and corn from 10 mu of hill fields. It costs more to plant tobacco. Yunnan was hit by natural disasters as drought, flood and hail, so the harvest was poor. The expenses of the family were relied on loans which was supposed to input in farming. The harvest barely covered the loans, so the family had to borrow money to pay debts. They owed their relatives over 10,000 so far. His father showed us their house which is a shabby shelter built by earth and woods. I am not sure how to describe the rooms. 4 bottles of soy sauce from the corner seemed the only furnishing of the family. Unfortunately, the examination results showed he got aorta overriding besides ventricular septal defect. To insure treatment effect, his operation was postponed to December. A foreign expert will do the operation for him. The family came back and will be waiting for the further news. A few days ago, his father called expressed his gratitude to us. He also asked the operation schedule. I told him I would inform him if there’s any information about it. It is a plain father who hide his love for his son by hard working in the fields. I also look forward to the coming of December as the father. It will be the hope for Xiao Song and the family. I hope everything will be goes well for the operation. To be continue... Many of these children do not have access to proper nutrition, healthcare, or education. In fact in some villages, a household's primary source of income is donating blood. We know from personal experience that a little can go a long way for struggling rural families. I still remember the first time I heard of the organization Transparent Fish Fund. At that time, we were in the very early stages of developing our organization. I believed we were the right partner for the program, but didn't know if we could get past their rigorous application process. We uploaded our financial plan and program proposal to TFISH and waited patiently. It was sometime May 2011 when I received a surprising phone call. Mr. Chao called us directly from the US. He read through our application and believed in our work and wanted to help us improve our project management skill and achieve financial transparency. With his an encouragement we were able to grow into the organization we are today. |
