Little Red Scarf is in Lanzhou, Gansu province and provides financial support and encouragement to children suffering from congenital heart disease. In addition, they provide families with post-operative care and help the children sustain a healthy lifestyle. Ruirui lives in a small village of Gansu province. The whole family of 8 makes living from a few acres of fields. Her eldest sister got married and his brother married in 2008, who had to take the burden of the family. The family owed about 20,000yuan of debts. Her brother is the only labor worker of the family. Her father were not able to do any manual work since he fell down from a building roof. Her mother has poor eyesight and back problem, so she can do nothing manual. Her brother hurt very seriously when fell down from a construction site. Her cranial nerves got serious hurt. Ruirui’s elder sister raised her. Speaking of Ruirui, her sister could not help weeping. When Ruirui was adopted when she was 9 months. She was so skinny and the family itself was in desperate situation, but they still gave the best to the baby. Due to some congenital illnesses, she had not been able to walk until 4 years old. She went to grade 1 when she was 8 and grade 6 in 19. Longwan Caring Home is located in Dahua County, which was listed as one of the poorest counties in Guangxi Province. Longwan Caring Home is a big family consisting of orphans, single parents, and abandoned children. The normal expense of the Home is sustained by plantation, breeding, and small business. I was lucky to know that Luoyang Charity Vocational School would admit some students from remote areas. The school has several majors as pre-school education, tourism and hotel management, e-commerce management, etc. The students who are Yao people and below 20, above 15, dropped from school with junior high school education can be admitted. When the news came to our Home, we could not help thinking if we should win the opportunity to our children from rural areas. The children may be more useful to the society through continuing education. With discussion, we decided to visited villages and collect information from primary schools. During the visits, we got to know many of children between 13 and 14 had dropped from school and went outside to work. Many teachers said most of Yao children in their 15 or above had gone to other provinces for their further education. It would be difficult to find the children between 15 and 20. In spite of this, 2 girls of 15 who had gone for work for 2 years found us when they heard the news and asked us to persuade their parents to let them to go to vocational school. Teacher Qi and I went to their village—Jiangnan village. It was not easy to reach, we had to climb mountains. Finally, the families agreed their children’s demands, but when we left, their parents blamed them. Their parents said they could have earned some money for the family by working in the city, but they were going to spend more money instead by going back to school. One of the girls persuaded their parents anyway by presenting a lot of facts. Low education let them earn less money than people with more education. The girl’s name is Lan Yinhua. We hope they will fulfill their dreams. We recommended 14 children to the vocational school this time. We hope they will carry their purpose of charity forward and benefit more students with education. March 17th is a memorable day. It is the 9th International Social Worker Day. It’s our holiday. Meanwhile, we would like to send our thankfulness and greetings to TFish. Considering past 2 years, we got a lot of supports and encouragement from TFish. We chose to be social workers, which means we chose to work with love and learn with mind. Maybe our work seemed tedious. We take records, accompany or seek solutions to people in disadvantage situation. We take seriously to every piece of little things. We need to do them with love so that we know and respect our clients well. Help people to help themselves cannot be a simple service, which requires rich experience and professional skills. We need other people’s help while we help people. We keep learning to meet the requirements of the job. I hope more people begin to care social workers and enjoy the festival. We would like to present our sincere gratitude to Mr. Chao and other staff of TFish. Wish a happy festival for our co-workers. It is getting dark after we’re done with visiting Hongyan and her family. We went directly to Xiao Ma’s house by taxi and planned to stay at her house for overnight. Every time we came to this area, we stopped by Xiao Ma’s house. We brought to them some watermelon and snacks. We stayed with them for half day on Aug 6th before heading back home. When we visited both Hongyan and Xiao Ma, we gave each family bottles of vitamins. Take a look at these two little cuties watching their mom with the vitamins. Xiao Ma is good at raising sheep and very diligent too. There are about more than 100 families in Xiao Ma’s village. About half of them are raising sheep. There are five sheep in their sheepfold. When sister Yuan and sister Guan visited Xiao Ma in April this year, the sheep was pregnant. Now we see their three new born (one female about 40 days old, two males about 30 days old) Sheep can start breeding after 5 months old. A large sheep can breed 3 times in 2 years. In general, a sheep can be raised for up to 5 or 6 years. Sheep can be sold after three months old. Once sheep giving birth, it’ll breast feed its baby for up to two months. The baby sheep can graze, feed after 40 days old. The source of feed for sheep is extensive: corn stalks, straw, leaves, alfalfa, and so on. This Father's Day, consider adopting a family in western China and develop a long-term relationship. As we celebrate Father’s Day, we honor fathers who embrace their family role and work hard to provide for their children. A Father’s Heart Loves We see a father’s love as he demonstrates approval and affirmation of the children he has been entrusted with. We see a father’s heart as he opens his arms to welcome his sons and daughters.
Little Red Scarf is in Lanzhou, Gansu and Yunnan province and provides financial support and encouragement to children suffering from congenital heart disease. In addition, they provide families with post-operative care and help the children sustain a healthy lifestyle. It was March we got to know Da Yong. He was admitted by hospital for pulmonary hypertension crisis. During the period, he had been writing letters to encourage other patients. He introduced other patients to Little Red Scarf. His optimistic impressed us and we had been concerning about him. We visited him 4 months after. For Da Yong, illness seemed so familiar. Since he was a child, he has been spending each carefully. He often caught cold. He was diagnosed congenital heart disease ventricular septal defect when he was 3. The family could not afford the surgery. His father had to work in the city. Da Yong accepted surgery when he was 10, when he got very serious pulmonary hypertension. 2 years after the surgery was pleasant for him. He could go to school and play as his contemporaries. To pay off the debts, his sister dropped from school and started to work. The economic burden of the family got relieved and the family even built the new house. Good time didn’t last long. Da Yong began to feel short breath. Walking became increasingly difficult for him. He boarded at school when he was in junior high school. His parents picked him up at weekends with plate trailer. Da Yong performed excellent at school and was admitted by a good county school when he finished his junior high school. There’s only a small steep road around the mountains to connect with the outside in the village. Motorcycle is the only transportation mean. It’s very hard to imagine how difficult it would be to use plate trailer for his mother to take him to school. Excellent school performances is the greatest encouragement for Da Yong. He has never thought of giving up study. He seldom participates in outdoor activities, so books become best friends to him. Jikang is 6 months old with 6 kilograms. 2 months after he was born, he got pneumonia due to the cold. His parents took him to take a check in a county hospital. The hospital did not admit him and asked the parents to take the baby to the city level hospital. He was diagnosed congenital heart disease. The parents were sad to hear the result and it was really difficult for them to accept. According to his mother, he has been weak since he was born. He got cold in his 2 months. His lips shows light purple and got serious situation when he got cold. In his 6 months, he had got 3 colds and had been staying in hospital. Her mother was very sad when he got injection. There are 6 children in Ji Kan’s family. His grandparents are about 55 this year. His grandmother is in poor health and has to take medicine, who got serious problem in spine. They had been thinking of surgery, but the doctor said it could be risky to be paralyzed. The old woman had to use stick for walking. There’s always someone to help her. Ji Kan’s grandfather got problem in one of his legs. Ji Kan’s elder sister is 2, who is okay. The family has 8 mu of fields. They plant wheat, barley and rape with 15000yuan/year income, which is the main income of the family. When the child was diagnosed heart disease, his father decided to find work in the city and earn more money for Ji Kan’s surgery, but he had to come back to take care of the children 1 month later. The income of the family is about 20000 yuan including the amount his father earned in a month this year, but the family owed 70,000 yuan. The debts is a big burden for the family, but Ji Kan’s mother thought the health of the child is the most important. She hopes Little Red Scarf could help them. Ji Kan was admitted by hospital, but it was really unexpected to hear when I visited him in the hospital that Ji Kan got very rare blood type. It is difficult to find such blood type for the surgery. His parent could do nothing about it and they had to count on hospital to find the same blood type. We wish Ji Kan good luck. It’s the second case of rare blood type when we launched the aid program. A child supported by Little Red Scarf was found to have rare, but fortunately his uncle matched his type. His uncle donated his blood. Kinship seemed so important now. I have told Ji Kan’s parents that it might be possible to find the same blood type among their relatives. Good luck to them. Xiao Yi is a 10-month baby who was born in a county hospital. The doctor was surprised to see her purple face and lips. After diagnosing, she was referred to Pediatrics for breathing oxygen. 7 days later, she was discharged from the hospital. When she went back home, her face showed no purple, but she seemed very weak. She often caught cold and caused pneumonia. She had to go to hospital again when she was 3 months old. Her parents said she often got cold and treatment in hospital was expensive. The obvious symptoms are purple lips when she was crying. Xiao Yi’s family have 7 people: grandparents, 2 uncles, parents and her elder brother. Her grandparents are over 60 and they could not do manual work. Her 2 uncles are migrant workers in the city. They have not married. There are 5 rooms for the family. The main pillars of the family are her parents. They grow 7 mu fields. They planted some potatoes and wheat. They also planted apples. Her father would work in the city during slack farming season. Her father can earn about 20,000 yuan which used mostly on family expenses, fertilizers and medical treatment.
