June is a busy month. We’ve done a lot and achieved a lot. Here are some pictures and stories we would like to share with you. On June 10, training was held at a school of voluntary teachers. On June 20, the color and style of uniforms for the voluntary teachers was fixed. On June 28, the uniforms were completed. On June 20, our newsletter was printed, which included information on major disaster relief, support for poor students, remote areas visitation, voluntary teaching activity during the summer holiday, etc. On June 13,an activity to support prevention of major illnesses for children from poverty stricken families was held. 2000-20000 RMB is provided to children suffering from a major illness annually. The applications for aid are being reviewing by the Shanghai Wumengchao Medical Science and Technology Fund. On June 22, the Association visited remote areas to complete a water project as well as check up on project outcomes in the schools. July is coming and voluntary teaching will start on July 8. Please pay attention to our activity. We believe we can bring hope for the west through our efforts. Original article written by Jingtian Yao, translated by Maggie Li, edited by Yanyan Zhang Rainbow Village Help Center is a TFish Strategics Member. It was established in Chengdu of Sichuan, China and for the purpose of giving glasses to impoverished children. 2 months after the earthquake in Ya’an, the rescue work is almost completed. Life at the disaster-stricken area is returning to normal. The school is on summer holiday, so education and safety for the children is very important. The below picture shows the place that Rainbow Village wants to set up a service center. It is located in a mountainous area with poor traffic. The houses have been badly destroyed by the quake, and the whole town has to be rebuilt. The people will have to live in the tents during the reconstruction. After the quake, many kindergartens became dilapidated. Temporary shelters were built, but the space inside is smaller, which makes it harder for the children to play. They have to have their classes in the morning, but they do not have a place to play after school. There are dilapidated buildings everywhere.
Rain Service Center for Children is a project run in collaboration with One Fund and One Playground. It aims to provide a safe and comfortable playground for the children living in the disaster-stricken areas. Because of the quake, children will have to make up lessons and attend hobby groups during the summer holiday. The playground will ensure that they do not play near dilapidated buildings. Now their parents can focus on reconstruction. Here in the playground, the children will have carefree fun, which is good for them psychologically. Original article written by Quandi Cheng, translated by Maggie Li and edited by Yanyan Zhang Ms. Zhou focuses on mental and psychological counseling for women in rural areas. Ms.Zhou is in Tanshan, Hebei province. In late June, I was invited to train people on fetal education in Sichuan. In the past, I could not spare thetime to give a lecture. But this time, I promised to make a public lecture. The location was in a rural girl's shop, a girl who was a successful recipient of our project last year. Women from rural areas do not have that much knowledge of fetal health, but the problem is more serious than I expected. Here are some conversations. 1. 23 years old, junior middle school education, 3 months pregnant, “my husband said smoking will not influence the baby, because our forefathers did so and they also give birth to babies.” 2. 24, primary school education, 3 months pregnant, “I do not care about fetal education. I will take a B ultrasonic test in 4th month. If the baby is a girl, I will do an abortion. ” 3. 21, junior high school education, 3 months pregnant, “my husband treats me well, letting me stay at home to rest. I like to play Mahjong and I am happy, so it’s not necessary to participate in fetal education.” She asked me if playing Mahjong can influence the fetus. The answer is obvious, “a 5-month fetus can hear voices.” The Light of Love Public Welfare Development Center is located in Nanjing, China. It is dedicated to the development of rural education and community public welfare.
On June 23, 2013, we held an activity to visit senior citizens in the community despite the bad weather. Volunteers came to the homes of the senior citizens, bringing gifts. They talked with the old people, getting to know what they need. They talked happily and the senior citizens were grateful for the activity. They like our volunteers. We also gave questionnaires to the senior citizens, hoping to improve our services. The activity was popular and the senior citizens gave us high praise. Zhang Yi, a volunteer from the university, visited Grandpa Zhang who treated her as his granddaughter. The old man shot a video of her and we were moved. An old man even greeted us with some snacks and showed us some pictures from his travels. We hope more old people have good health and we hope that our project can help us maintain a good relationship with them. Today is a happy day. Before 8:00, parents sent their children to the service station to get new school uniforms. The color of the uniforms is as bright as the sun. There are also new schoolbags and shoes for the children. At 9:00, all children were sitting on the chairs, looking around with curiosity and expectation. At 9:30, we began to distribute school uniforms. We had prepared a uniform and a school bag for each of the 109 children. Some loving people also donated sports shoes. The children tried on their new clothes and shoes immediately. How lovely they are! They were discussing the functions of the new bag excitedly. Looking at them, we were moved and contented. Original article written by Maohua Qin, translated by Maggie Li and edited by Yanyan Zhang TFish had a great time at the Los Altos Arts Festival this weekend in Los Altos, CA! We held a 'color a fish' campaign where the Chao Foundation pledged to donate $1 for every fish colored at our booth to one of our partners. By the end of the festival 363 fish were colored and $363 were donated to Sahaya International, O'Keefe and Bayshore Christian Ministries. Thank you to all of our volunteers from Sahaya, O'Keefe, BCM and EV! We enjoyed spreading the word about TFish and transparency to our Los Altos neighbors and look forward to our next event!
As a non-governmental organization, Jiaozuo Education Aid Association takes “building a loving platform for the development of teenager” as its mission. It is in Jiaozuo, Henan. At 8:00 in the morning, June 24, volunteers from our association, 2 reporters from Orient Today and a supplier of basketball stands went to Dongchangcun Primary School, bringing basketball stands to the children. After a 1 hour long ride, they arrived at the school. The schoolmaster and teachers gave them a warm welcome. The basketball stand was moved to the playground of school. The playground is simple with no sports equipment. The volunteers discussed how to arrange the basketball stands. Installation of the basketball stands needs sand and lime to build the base. Teachers borrowed an electro-tricycle and bought materials together with a volunteer. Then they were busy building the base. Qianqian, a volunteer, bought bottled water for all the people and Xiao Ci was busy taking pictures. It’s hot, and Dongzi, one of the volunteers, got his clothes all wet. The base needed to be dried for 3 to 4 days before the installation. The supplier explained the precautions of installation to the PE teachers. As they were leaving, the schoolmaster gave the volunteers presents to express their gratitude, but the volunteers declined with thanks. The bell rang and students went out to the playground. Seeing the new basketball stands, they were so happy. We hope the extracurricular life of the students has became more colorful. Original article written by Jichang Wang, translated by Maggie Li, edited by Yanyan Zhang Compassion Nayong Public Welfare is based on Nayong, a poverty-stricken area in Guizhou Province. Taking the network as the platform, it carries out various public welfare activities to aid education. There is a team of volunteers who have been visiting villages for years, delivering our love to people in remote areas. The picture shows aid distribution to a primary school. The truck got stuck in the mud. Volunteers and villagers had to pull the truck with ropes. Will you be moved by seeing this? The next picture shows a project review. They are on the way to a primary school. A landslide happened on the road. They had to go forward cautiously with superior driving skills. We concerned about their safety. Mingda School pays attention to rural education in northwest of China, in particular English education. The School provides a relaxing and healthy education environment for the left-behind children living in rural areas.
In 2010, we started cooperating with the Rainbow Village Public Welfare Development Center. We have been working together ever since. Now we are on the way to Rainbow village, bringing lovely gifts for people in Chengdu. Poverty is not inherent in their nature, nor is it part of the culture passed from generation to generation. The land was stamped as “most unsuitable for living” by UNESCO, but the people living here still plow their land, struggling against the poverty. We have to guard our homeland and improve the ecological environment where we are living. Our idea is to put environmental protection in the minds and education of teenagers, so that they can help us to develop as well as our descendents. Water is the source of life. As society develops, safe drinking water becomes a huge priority. Without safe water, we will not have better health, let alone a harmonious well-off society. In the west of China, factors such as low rainfall, strong light, large evaporation and so on are disturbing the lives of local people. Building concrete cisterns and using facilities as roofs, yards and ditches to store water are the main solutions. However, the problem of water safety in cisterns cannot be ignored. During previous visits, we found many students drink water from the cistern of the school directly, which is a health hazard. In response, we installed professional water purification equipment for some of the schools in Dingxi City by cooperating with the Jiuyang Company, which has greatly ensured the safety of the drinking water for the students and has provided a better environment for them to grow up healthily. Many schools in rural areas have benefited from this project. We hope more loving people and manufacturers for water purification equipment will join us to provide safe water for the children living in remote areas.
