Grounded on core values of respect, love, and service to the elderly, the Xin Yue Senior Citizen Service Center of Chongqing, China, promotes social work services for senior citizens and builds harmonious living environment for them. In the afternoon of April 10, Starbucks volunteers planned a series of activities for our seniors, including birthday party, pot plantation, interior decoration and publicity board making. The volunteers were divided into groups and they went to different sites to hold activities. Birthday Party The elderly people gathered in the activity room. Organized by the social workers, the activity consisted of self-introduction, art performances and birthday celebration. The old people introduced themselves seriously with a microphone. With bursts of laughter, the volunteers gave wonderful performances. Then the social workers and volunteers presented birthday cake and greetings to the elderly. Planting At 9:30 in morning, the social workers and volunteers prepared 3 kinds of plants for the elderly. During the activity, the volunteers introduced the plants and their right ways of plantation. They also gave a demonstration. The elderly were deeply attracted. They asked many questions on the skills of planting. With the help of the volunteers, they planted their flower and watered them carefully. A few of them showed their works and shared their feelings with the others. Interior Decoration To have a warmer room, the volunteers from Starbuck began to decorate the walls with the help of the social workers. The elderly were happy and participated in the decoration activity. With team work, the walls were made nice and warm. An old man could not help praising, “that’s really nice-looking…….” Sometimes, only a tint of color would bring more happiness to the elderly. Publicity Boarding The volunteers from Starbuck showed their talents by drawing pictures and doing paper-cutting to decorate aisles. For many of volunteers, it was their first time to do paper-cutting and jigsaw puzzle. They were interested in such handcraft job. With their love and efforts, the blank walls became vivid. In order to promote exchange between social workers and volunteers and to improve the plan of voluntary service, we held a meeting in the afternoon of April 7, 2013. We invited 19 volunteer delegates to attend the meeting, from students to enterprises. The meeting included 3 parts: introduction of voluntary work, experience sharing from volunteers and volunteers’ commendation. The participants were active to share their feelings and gains during their voluntary services in 2013. One of the volunteers shared her story and gave a bright smile when she mentioned granny Li. The audiences were moved by her smile. Before the end of the meeting, the social workers awarded certificates and gifts to volunteers. The first page of the gift was written by elderly to the volunteers, which made the simple gifts with special meaning. We would like to thank the staff from our organization. They are lovely bees that brought happiness to the elderly. Thank you TFish donors for your care and support for our services. Wish all the elderly happy and healthy. Honghong is one of our recipients of Little Red Scarf and was referred to us through a relative. She lives outside of the city and while conditions of the town are better than most rural villages we visit, her family is in poverty. Both her parents are mentally ill and her father works contract positions for a construction team. Last year, he earned a total of about $800 a year. Her home is made of mud and used to be a pigsty. Hongyan also has two brothers. One of her brothers has eye problem, but the family could not afford the examinations in hospital. The youngest brother is over 1. Her mother has to stay at home to take care of the children and housework. They also grow vegetables and corn. However it is difficult to keep the farm when her father is holding a construction job and her mother is taking care of the three kids.
