Xin Yue Senior Service Center: Welcome Our New Friends

8/17/2013

Grounded on core values of respect, love, and service to the elderly, the Xin Yue Senior Citizen Service Center of Chongqing promotes social work services for senior citizens and builds harmonious living environment for them.

To greet 4 new senior citizens arriving at the Center, 6 volunteers from Xin Yue and Tsinghua Middle school held a welcome party. Many senior citizens at the center participated in the activity.

It was a hot day, and the primary goal of our activity was to ensure the safety and good health of the elderly people, so volunteers and social workers did a full on-site check, used time management skills, offered a pick-up service and provided emergency aid. In the activity, newcomers did a self-introduction, then the volunteers led them in interactive games and let them share their feelings about living in the nursing home.

During the activity, the old people described their personal circumstances. From their self-introductions, we felt bitterness and helplessness from their words. Some of them have no one to depend on, some of them stay far away from their children and some of them suffer from serious illnesses. In spite of all that, they chose to spend the rest of their lives here. But for most of them, they would rather choose to stay with their family if that was an option. In spite of these difficulties, they displayed amazing perseverance. Whenever a newcomer completed his speech, the other people gave him warm applause and greetings. Words of encouragement and caring brought confidence to the newcomers. After the activity, the social workers shared their feelings with the volunteers.

Qingcao Youth Service Center: Trial Teaching in Qingcao Summer Camp

8/17/2013

Qingcao Youth Service Center was initiated by the high school graduates, who are dedicated to create learning opportunities via practice and social environment led by youth peers, cultivating youth with love, ideas and action. It is located in Guangzhou city.

To improve the teacher's effectiveness in the classroom, we organized voluntary teachers to prepare sample classes at Guangya Middle School on July 7th. Trial teaching is an important way to train volunteers.

We believe this is a good opportunity to test volunteer teachers. Each teaching group did a lot of preparation. Some of the teachers did not perform very well due to a lack of experience, but we could see they all wanted to improve.  Compared with the first lesson they prepared, they improved a lot in terms of time and content. Their effectiveness became more obvious and their goals became clearer. The place we practiced was in a classroom.  Each team sat down in a circle. The teachers had different roles: lecturer or audience, and shared their opinions with the presenters.  There were members of Qingcao, curriculum advisers, researchers, etc at the site. They objectively assessed the lessons prepared by the volunteers.

Longwan Caring Home: Making Dumplings

8/15/2013

Longwan Caring Home is located in Dahua County, which was listed as one of the poorest counties in Guangxi Province. Longwan Caring Home is a big family consisting of orphans, single parents, and abandoned children. The normal expense of the Home is sustained by plantation, breeding, and small business.

Teacher Yao started to teach miming at Longwan last summer holiday. He came again this summer, bringing postcards with pictures of the children performing last year. During the training, the teacher sold 35 postcards. He made 600 Yuan.  After coming back, they decided to use the money to make dumplings. Guanyuan drove the car and brought back meat, leeks, mushrooms, etc. After 2 hours of hard work, 30 kilograms of dumpling wrappers were filled with stuffing. Afterwards we admired them lying on the table in all kinds of different shapes.

Compassion Nayong Public Welfare: New Library

8/15/2013

Compassion Nayong Public Welfare is based on Nayong, a poverty-stricken area in Guizhou Province. Taking the network as the platform, it carries out various public welfare activities to aid education.

Primary Schools in rural areas do not have spare money to pay for a library. Even when they have the money, the books often do not meet the students reading needs. Such situations limit the children’s minds.

In order to build a library, the liaison team from Compassion Nayong sought resources on the internet, delivered an application, followed up, and waited for approval…… Finally, trucks of books were transported to the office. The team members were very happy. The volunteers helped to separate and package the books.

The school that accepted the books promised to manage the library well. Every student will have access to the books as much as possible, so they can fully enjoy the spiritual food.

So far, Compassion Nayong has supported libraries for 120 village primary schools.

Loving Public Welfare Association of Anding District: We Are in the Forefront of Relief

8/14/2013

Loving Public Welfare Association of Anding District,Dingxi City of Gansu Province is consisted of teachers and students from universities, which is engaged in helping vulnerable groups by means of voluntary services.

At 7:45 on July 22, 2013, a 6.6 magnitude earthquake with 20,000 meters focal depth hit Gansu.  89 people died, 5 are missing and 800 are injured.  31600 were resettled.

As a local volunteer organization, we arrived at the quake-hit areas first. After a 4 hour long ride, the volunteers arrived at Daming County. They rushed to the Lalu village because it was the worst-hit area. As the road was blocked, the volunteers had to walk 6 kilometers.

We were shocked by the situation in front of us. All the mud-brick houses in the 3 villages had collapsed. Everything had been buried under the ruins, leaving people shaking in the wind. Children and babies had no milk. They were crying with hunger. A grandmother of over 70 lost her grandson. She was weeping……

At 23:00, the volunteers and firemen were busy with rescue jobs, which continued until 3:00 in the morning. The volunteers returned to the camp, summarizing relief information and discussing with other NGOs how to integrate the relief goods.  The relief goods will be sent to the quake-hit areas soon. We hope the people in the disaster-hit areas will start their new life as soon as possible with help from loving people everywhere.

TFish Fund: TFish Transparency Assessment for the Second Quarter of 2013

8/10/2013

Every month, 10 outstanding and trustworthy grassroots organizations are selected to become TFISH Fund Associate Members and receive seed funding. Our goal is to promote 50 to 100 grassroots organizations over the span of two or three years to be completely financially transparent. We hope that this transparency model will eventually become a mainstream culture among nonprofit organizations.

To measure transparency among the current groups we work with, we have adopted 3-star assessment standards, one assessment for each quarter during the cooperation period. The results of the 2nd quarter of 2013 and 2012 assessment are as follows:

Longwan Caring Home: Maize Is Growing Up

8/6/2013

Longwan Caring Home is located in Dahua County, which was listed as one of the poorest counties in Guangxi Province. Longwan Caring Home is a big family consisting of orphans, single parents, and abandoned children. The normal expense of the Home is sustained by plantation, breeding, and small business.

The semester has ended and the children are on holiday. They went back home to wait for their final exam scores. During their schooling we made sure to provide them with a strong moral education. They are just like young crops. If you want a good harvest, you have to cultivate then carefully. We live in a rural area and our living conditions are poor, but we pass on virtues from generation to generation—honesty and hard work. Thanks to your support, our children are now living happily. We will teach them to be thankful and return their gifts to society. We asked our children to participate in fieldwork to experience the hardship during the harvest. Now they can understand that a happy life and hard work cannot be separated.

Xi’an Alliance: A Simple Special Education Center

8/4/2013

Picture
Xi’an Alliance works to promote a spirit of volunteerism. Many student volunteers are trained to participate in public welfare activities and social work. The main office is in Xi’an, China.

There’s a special education center in a village of Gaoling County Xi’an, called the Hand in Hand Special Educational Center. It is a non-profit education organization for children with autism in Gaoling area.

At 9:00, July 14, 2013, when all the volunteers came, we took an exciting ride to Gaoling. After over an hour, the volunteers got off the bus and walked for a long time. We finally saw the children who were having class. The kids shouted to us, “Hello, uncles and aunts!"

It was hot and the teacher had to put a basin of water in the classroom. There was only one fan to help keep the temperature cool. The teachers are currently trying to raise money for an air conditioner for the girl's dormitory to help them get through the hot summer.

Because of the shortage of money, the protective railings haven’t been installed and the walls have not been painted upstairs. These repairs will cost 70,000 RMB (about 12,000 dollars).

We hope that more and more people will come and help these kids.
