In June 2015, Xingze Volunteers has four main activities: 1. Helping the poor; 2. Helping school children 1+1; 3. Volunteer events; 4. Caring for the elderly. This month we organized a total of 33 volunteer events, with 2015 volunteers and a total hour count of 687 hours. I. Helping the poor: On the 28th of last month, we visited the Chen family home in Qinputou Village of Gaocun Township. After sending over part of our gifts on the 30th, we immediately began implanting our plan to fix their leaky roof. On June 5th, 2 volunteers led a construction team to the site to gather measurements and calculate amount of materials needed. The volunteers wrote a journal about their visit titled “We Are Your Eyes.” On June 6th and in a sweltering heat, 9 volunteers helped the Chen family clear and clean the rooftop area in preparation for the waterproof work. The work was finished by nightfall. On the 8th, 3 volunteers came to the family home to check out the roof project and to pay for the project costs. On June 24th, 1 volunteer came to the Chen family home to see how effective the waterproof work was ---- after a day and night of rain, the room remained dry. The result is great! The Build a Bridge project provides safer, sturdier bridges for villages in Vietnam. The $6,000 donation from Grandma Chu's Love Fund enabled the original "Monkey Bridge" to be rebuilt in 2015. The Original Monkey BridgeThe “monkey bridge” in Thanh Truc village is extremely fragile. The bridge is very difficult and dangerous for the villagers to cross, especially for the young children and senior citizens. The children have no choice though except to cross the bridge to get to their village school on the other side of the river.
Longwan Caring Home is located in Dahua County, which was listed as one of the poorest counties in Guangxi Province. Longwan Caring Home is a big family consisting of orphans, single parents, and abandoned children. The normal expense of the Home is sustained by plantation, breeding, and small business. The children of Longwan live far away in the village. They were sent to Longwan for reasons. They would come back home for help during busy season. 10 persons followed Guanyuan to his hometown. It takes about 6 hours bus and 4 hours’ walking. We experienced rough and dangerous mountainous roads. Jiawei said, “I did not find the importance of Longwan before I visit the village. The children do not need to walk by living in Longwan.” Uncke Dayang said we just started. 10 days ago, I came here. I had imagined the place had blue sky and innocent children. 10 days later, they told me what is grateful and love. How can I describe each smiling face? I am not sure if I should be sad or take pity on them. There are a group of left-behind children. Some people had tried to protect them by not mentioning their parents. Actually, they had accepted such reality, since they could not choose what they wanted. We are here to keep accompany with them and teach them Contributing writers David and Rossana Lin share about their personal experience of sponsoring a poor boy from Gansu, the relationship that developed between him and their family, and the impact it made on his life. It all started in 2005 when we requested to support the school fees of a poor boy from Gansu who was around our elder boys' age, was good at school, and loved math and sciences. Out of thousands of applicants, Town and Talent Co. (www.yellowsheepriver.com) found us a match and sent us his photo. His grandma and mother were both bedridden, leaving only his father to farm the little plot of land in a dry and arid land, barely eeking out a living for the medical bills. Without financial support, Will would drop out to help his Dad farm while his sister went on to finish high school and find someone to marry. For a bit more than $100 a year, which amounted to a couple of cups of Starbucks a month, our family became friends with Will's family. Will's father would bring him to our classes whenever we taught in Gansu for a week, staying with our boys. That memorable first time marked how far he has come. When we asked him to go wash up before we headed out for dinner, he stood paralyzed in the bathroom for 5 minutes, having never seen running water, a sink that had a hole in it, or a toilet. Our boys complained about his intolerable smell and taught him how to use the shower.

The office is in Xingyang, Henan province. On the bright and sunny afternoon of June 21st, we, along with 25 other volunteers, went to the Henan Volunteer Social Welfare Center to set up a session where the elderly members of the community can get free haircuts. They were elated once they heard the news and immediately rushed over for their haircuts and to socialize. The volunteers carefully combed, trimmed, and transformed different hairstyles for the senior citizens. This is where the barber workshop took place.
