On June 18, 2016 BJ Behcet hosted a 5k walk to raise awareness for Behcet's disease. The outdoor race was called "Walk with Love." Participants included 13 patients with Behcet's disease, 45 volunteers, and Behcet's disease specialists. 5K Walk Raises AwarenessThis event was organized by the China Fuli Foundation, Behcet Alliance and Zhi Guang Gong Yi. It was a great success, even though it was a hot sunny day! The participants handed out pamphlets to the public along the way to increase awareness about Behcet's disease. The volunteers and experts hoped to gain more support for patients with this disease. A film was also made to help people understand the disease, to avoid misdiagnosis and to have early intervention. Everyone was full of energy before the walk started. This is the photo with the Huadong Hospital Director of Rheumatology, Professor Guan Jian Long, 44 volunteers from Zhi Guang Gongyi, and 14 patients from Behcet Alliance. Professor Guan Jian Long gave a speech to introduce the symptoms and current treatment of Behcet's disease. He also tried to raise awareness of this invisible killer that leads to oral ulcers! Behcet Alliance Director Lao Junma also expressed his gratitude to all the disease experts, the media, volunteers, and patients, hoping that everyone could work together to ensure the success of the day's challenge! The walk began. Three volunteers and one patient walked hand-in-hand to began the challenge! We hope there will be more and more people in the future who will pay attention to this disease and be willing to support Behcet's public welfare efforts so patients can be diagnosed early and have their disease well controlled. Pamphlets were distributed during the race to introduce Behcet's disease. These members of the Behcet Alliance successfully finished the challenge. It seems everyone was able to face the 5 km challenge! The volunteers from Behcet Alliance were kind and loving. They were not afraid of the scorching heat. They worked hard to carefully plan, and they all personally tried the route in advance. Rest stations were set up along the way, which was very thoughtful. The whole event was well organized, and the safety of each participant was emphasized. Thank you everyone for your hard work! Hospital VisitAfter the walk was completed in the morning, Huadong Hospital Professor Guan Jian Long invited the patients who participated in the event to visit the hospitalized patients at the Huadong hospital. They asked about their conditions and encouraged them to cooperate with the treatment, rest properly, and have proper exercises, as well as to try adjusting their attitude to control the disease as best as they could. One of the patients came back for a re-examination. He is doing well. However, some of the patients were not doing so well. One of these patients is a 19-year-old boy who just finished his college entrance exam this year. His symptoms just appeared at the beginning of April, and it was the time he needed to prepare for his exam. We are hoping he can recover soon and be able to continue his studies! There was another patient who also suffered from a heart condition associated with ascending aortic aneurysm. He is under conservative treatment in hopes of reducing the size of the aneurysm to avoid surgery. We are waiting hopefully for the good news that he will be discharged from the hospital! Everyone was hungry after the 5 km walk and hospital visitation. Professor Guan had already prepared a nutritious meal. People were drinking and chatting. Professor Guan started a tea party in the newly established multidisciplinary consultation meeting room for Behcet's disease. We asked some questions about Bechet's disease and expressed our gratitude for Professor Guan's hospitality and his help for patients with Behcet's disease!
