Partner Highlight: Community Mental Health Organization in China Celebrates Easter with Youth

7/13/2014

Picture
The Jingjieniao Home is in Xi’an, Shan’xi province. It provides services for the mentally handicapped from poverty-stricken families. The organization is dedicated to improving their spirit and living standards and advocating for every disabled individual to have adequate access to social resources.

Volunteers and teachers from Jingjieniao organized activities to celebrate Easter with mentally ill students. Our activity today was to find colored eggs. Since Easter is not as celebrated in China, our students were unfamiliar with the holiday. The staff had fun explaining the traditions of Easter, and hiding the colored eggs in the corners of the classroom.

The students set out to find their lucky eggs. They took the search very seriously and were quite competitive too. Eventually, every student was able to find an egg. But the game wasn't over yet! There was a surprise you must find by breaking the egg. Once smashed, our students were delighted to find candies and toys. We all loved the game and the surprise at the end left everyone smiling.

After the activity, we closed the day by making our own color eggs. The children would use cooked eggs to show off their artistic ability and had fun being creative.

On October 11, 2013, children from the Jingjieniao Home went to Gaoxin No. 1 Middle School by bus to attend a party. The teachers and students from Gaoxin Middle School and the students from Jingjieniao did a lot to prepare for the activity- everyone wanted to present a wonderful performance.

At 9:00 AM, the students dressed up and started off in high spirits. They were even singing songs on the bus. When they entered the spacious music hall and saw the bright lights and rows of seats, the student could not help but feel nervous.  But after rehearsal, they became more confident. The activity officially began with the entrance of students and teachers from Gaoxin No. 1 Middle School.

The students from Gaoxin No.1 Middle School organized the activity to bring happiness and warmth to the students from Jingjieniao. But they ended up inspiring themselves as well!.  All the students were the same age, but their situations are so different. We hope the students from Gaoxin No.1 Middle school learned something valuable from our students. We also hope the activity will encourage more people to participate in activities like this, letting the seeds of love take roots.

The 2013 cooking contest began on Teacher’s Day. The competitors were busy preparing very early in the morning. There were 4 groups (Cucumber Group, Potato Group, Lotus Root Group and Onion Group) and each presented their unique culinary techniques.

At 11:30 AM, dishes were served on the table: braised meatballs, crispy meat, rice pudding, braised chicken, etc. All of them seemed so appetizing. Little You Ran could not feed herself so her teacher had to feed her. We want this child to feel love and warmth here in Jingjieniao.

The food judges commented on each dish. They were moved by the earnest optimism of the teachers and children from Jingjieniao, and heartily thanked all the teachers.

Jiangjin Sunshine Social Service Center: New School Uniform

7/20/2013

Jiangjin Sunshine Social Service Center, founded in 2007, has over 500 volunteers, which is dedicated to the care for the aged and disadvantaged children in community as well as relief and psychological care after disasters. The center is located in Jiangjin City of Chongqing.

Today is a happy day. Before 8:00, parents sent their children to the service station to get new school uniforms.

The color of the uniforms is as bright as the sun. There are also new schoolbags and shoes for the children. At 9:00, all children were sitting on the chairs, looking around with curiosity and expectation.

At 9:30, we began to distribute school uniforms. We had prepared a uniform and a school bag for each of the 109 children. Some loving people also donated sports shoes. The children tried on their new clothes and shoes immediately. How lovely they are! They were discussing the functions of the new bag excitedly. Looking at them, we were moved and contented.

“If you love me, please hug me. If you love me, please kiss me” is a nursery rhyme we taught the children to sing. The children are singing and their hands are waving rhythmically. The most lovable one is a 4-year-old girl, Jiao Jiao. She’s looking at the teacher attentively, afraid of missing even one beat. I cannot help being nervous for her in the audience. I tried to remind her of the moves, but she is just too busy to look at me. That’s ok. Let’s do it together. There is so much happiness gathered around these lovely children. I hope the happiness will go on and they will forget about the earthquake.

6/23/2013

There are over 500 volunteers working for Jiangjin Sunshine Social Service Center which is engaged in activities caring for the aged and left behind children.Jiangjin Sunshine Social Service Center is in Jiangjin, Chongqing.

On April 18, 2013, volunteers from the Jiangjin Sunshine Social Service Center visited a Jiangjin district nursing home. They gave digital audio-on-demand systems to the old people living in the nursing home as a gift.

350 pieces of audio-on-demand systems were delivered to 3 nursing homes. The system acts like a radio. The senior citizens can use it to listen to about 500 songs, including Sichuan opera, Huangmei opera and other classic songs. The senior citizens were very pleased to receive these systems. They opened the package cautiously and listened to the volunteers’ explanation of how to use it. The volunteers explained the operation of the system patiently. Soon the sound of music and laughter could be heard from the nursing home. You can imagine how happy a scene it was.

Today at the Jingjieniao Home, the life skill lesson was about washing clothes. In the pictures you can see how our teacher explained clothes washing to the children. Thy were surprised to learn that many people in foreign countries use a washing machine and know little about washing with their hands.

Jing Jie Bird Homes held activities for World Autism Day on April 2nd.  On 4/21/2013, autistic children performed at the TianLun Dynasty Hotel and to show their appreciation for generous donor support.

On April 2nd, our volunteers accompanied autistic children from Jing Jie Bird Homes to participate in the Blue Ribbon Care for Autism program.  Together, they marched to the main street to kick off the Blue Ribbon Care program.  The core message is: not to exclude, not to discriminate but to care for children with autism.  The purpose of this activity was to motivate our community to learn more about autism, understand and accept children with autism, promote and improve education for autistic children and improve their living conditions.
