Mid-Year Grant Report 2016: HOW Perpetual Giving Program

8/4/2016

Picture

Grant Results: April - July 2016

We were able to provide 25 families with pigs, chickens, and ducks, and some of them also received cows. The livestock gave the beneficiaries a source of income that allowed them to provide food and education for their families. Some were also able to pay for medical care.

HOW EB program continues thanks to TFF

3/29/2013

HOW is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in the USA, whose staff consists of all volunteers. Its mission is to provide hope and care to neglected, abandoned, and orphaned children in deprived areas of the world with a specific focus on VietNam. WARNING: Graphic images below.

Well, it certainly has been quite a while since I have been able to update everyone on the process and continuing work that Helping Orphans Worldwide, HOW has been working on and there are many updates, changes, wonderful things, horrible upsets, and continued love pouring in.

Please know that some of these photos are very upsetting so I will only post a few on this blog, and then will update the album as the photos are coming in. We usually do not post upsetting photos and like to only show the glorious efforts of our work, but in the case of EB (Epidermolysis Bullosa), which is:

"A rare genetic skin disease that causes the skin to be so fragile that even the slightest touch will separate the layers of the skin. The skin literally breaks, resulting in painful blisters and open wounds. A mother may never be able to hold her child tightly because the skin would peel off and bleed. Children with EB may never run or play as other children because even the slightest friction will cause them great pain."

We really have no choice but to be honest about what happens and the roadblocks we are finding along the way in Vietnam. As EB is genetic the countries, which are developing, are some of the most difficult to get help for. This genetic disorder is horrific anywhere and everywhere but in the countries where the education surrounding EB is limited, we are facing things we had no idea about and hard working with many amazing volunteer doctors, nurses, kind people making wound care donations, and with the wonderful financial help of  "Transparent Fish Fund", and "The Ping and Amy Chow Family Foundation" and we are making slow but positive progress, and then we are finding road blocks that make us work harder, hunt for creative solutions and deal with issues that are making our work next to impossible but we will never give up.

So, we were there, at the appreciation party. This was the first meeting of our volunteers and also the first opportunity for us all to know more about each other. We had a lot of fun there with our new friends who HOW brought together. We were singing, playing and having a good meal side by side as a family. We were delighted that our work was taken seriously.

Our work in this program is to help the kids at Bình Triệu Center with their studying. We have been working with the kids at the center for almost one month. This is nothing much yet, but we are in progress. The kids’ studying will be better with our help. They are nice, and eager to learn. If they keep the good work, they will sure have a bright future. All they need is just a little help because the Sisters at the center can’t support them all with their studying. So, we try our best to give them all we have. Tutoring is not an easy work, but our team as well as the kids work hard together to have the best result. Later, we will help them learning English with the program HOW provides. Thanks to this, the kids will have necessary Basic English, which is really important for them to be successful in the future.

Helping Orphan's Worldwide (HOW) Inc. has been very blessed with wonderful people helping so many people in ways one could not imagine! We have had many wonderful volunteers who have helped us to get to areas where there are hungry and impoverished people suffering in silence and some in such remote areas that it takes hours to get to them, and sometimes on food through very rough conditions. HOW has the most amazing volunteers who have close their small shops, taken unpaid days off work, gathered friends to help, and have joined together as a loving team to find these people and deliver much needed milk, rice, meat, fish, and fruit.

They have even gone through their clothing and asked others with very little to do the same and have delivered clothing along with food.

(Thi receives 6 month supply of EB Wound Care from Helping Orphans Worldwide, HOW) along with educational materials.

Since we HOW has been involved with EB (Epidermolysis Bullosa), which is a rare genetic skin disease that causes the skin to be so fragile that even the slightest touch will separate the layers of the skin. The skin literally breaks, resulting in painful blisters and open wounds. A mother may never be able to hold her child tightly because the skin would peel off and bleed. Children with EB may never run or play as other children because even the slightest friction will cause them great pain. EB occurs in every racial group throughout the world. Younger patients are sometimes called “Butterfly Children” because their skin is as fragile as a butterfly’s wings.

Kerri's Blog: What To Expect On A Wonderful, Life-changing Volunteer Trip with HOW

Some of HOW's wonderful volunteers with a few of the kids
I had thought about volunteering for years before I actually did anything about it. Even when I think back to how scary that first trip was, I still really wish I had done it years sooner. I hear this exact thing from our HOW volunteers every year. So, I am going to answer as many of the questions I have heard from volunteers as I can here and explain what you can expect from a HOW VIP trip.

The work for volunteers starts long before they arrive in Vietnam. You will need Tetanus, Typhoid and Hepatitis A and B vaccinations for travel in South East Asia. The volunteer programm from start to finish is 11 days so with travel included either side, you will need 2 weeks free and will book your own flights. You will also need a visa to enter Vietnam. Probably the most important though is fundraising, please visit our website for great fundraising ideas here :    http://helpinghow.com/get-involved/fundraise/

And the earlier you start the better! We have 100 ideas for fundraising and can provide t-shirts and official charity posters and brochures. Although it sounds like a lot of work, you will have help and advice every step of the way and I promise it is all worth it.

What a wonderful treat it was for Helping Orphans Worldwide, HOW to meet Nancy Nguyen from Transparent Fish Fund, along with her lovly mother Thuy and Great Uncle Hung! We have been working hard as we always have promised to do from the beggining in 2007 when HOW first began. We have been developing new projects and learning how to do things the right way every single time. When HOW applied for a grant from the Transparent Fish Fund months ago, we were so delighted to see that they were all very passionalte about the work HOW's volunteers do daily and especially intersted in one of our very difficult and loving program EB, (Epidermolysis Bullosa) which  is a rare genetic skin disease that causes the skin to be so fragile that even the slightest touch will separate the layers of the skin. The skin literally breaks, resulting in painful blisters and open wounds. A mother may never be able to hold her child tightly because the skin would peel off and bleed. HOW: Jane and Brett's Blog

9/29/2012

This blog is written by Brett, who will be blogging from his heart about he and his care giver Jane’s experience with Huy, with Helping Orphan's HOW, and EB Awareness in HMCM, Vietnam. This is Brett's Story:

My name is Brett Murray and I have a carer Jane Teede. We are from Bunbury Western Australia and travel quite frequently to Vietnam.

We love the people and the climate. We have now become involved with HOW through some very nice people we have met.  Which all started on a street corner by meeting Mr. Dat, who is an extraordinary person with a huge heart.

Mr. Dat first took us to a HOW orphanage, which was a wonderful experience. Since doing this we have met many volunteers from all over the world who all do a wonderful job for HOW.

We are becoming more involved, especially with the EB side of things, since meeting the founder Hillary Brown who is a lovely person.  We are becoming more involved each time we visit HCMC and are in love with a little fella named Huy. He is just a magnificent kid and is very sick with EB but is becoming a little bit better with the wonderful job and medical supplies, which are donated from all over the world.

Every time we see Huy his wounds look a lot better and he is becoming happier and more open with us. He is learning to speak English better and converse with us through Mr. Dat

His goal is to get outside, and play with other children, as he is bedridden 100% of the time.  We are in the process of organizing a mobile pram or wheelchair for him to be removed from his bed and taken outside and taken other places, which I am sure, will brighten his life and make it much better for him.
