They aim to help children living in poverty who lost love ones to the disaster. How are the sponsored children doing? During funds distribution, we went to schools and visited the children we sponsor. Most of the children lost their mother or father or both during the earthquake in 2008. The children lost their parents, which was a huge hit to their young souls. They were shocked and felt the loss keenly. They began to shut off and seldom communicated with people. When we visited this time, four years later, we found the children were back to their normal and healthy lives. Our help and efforts were rewarded and we are happy for them. The mudslide in July 2013 not only influenced the life and economy of the local people, but also made it difficult for people who needed to travel through this region. One month after the slide, we visited the place with the purpose of delivering funds to the children we support. We walked into the village at the end of August. We had to walk along the river and cliffs. When we got back in September, we were less lucky. Several days of rain made the river rise and submerge the paths we normally walked on so we had to walk on steel pipes across the river. Even so we were lucky, because we not only had the steel pipes but also, we had each other. In the middle of June, we visited the temporary primary school at Tianquan, Ya’an for the second time. We brought new clothes donated by the Tianzeren Company for the children. Looking at their innocent and happy faces, it’s difficult for us to believe that this is the place that was destroyed by the earthquake. Seeing the collapsed homes, we pray that every person in Sichuan will get out of the shadow of the earthquake and encourage each other to stand up again. There are many people who are caring and have helped us. If we will pull together and rebuild our homelands, tomorrow will be even better. We believe this is true and the villagers here also believe they can make it happen. Unfortunately, donated funds were not sent to the children on time in March due to a contingency. However, we fully understand the children's needs and expectation and we recently sent the fund for March and April to the school. We were not able to see all the sponsored children, but we saw their parents and talked to them, encouraging them to support their children and telling them that the current situation will be improved in the future. The villagers live high up in mountain areas where the road has not been paved, and with the lack of education in their community, they are isolated. Many of them do not know the outside world and are afraid of being cheated, so they are reluctant to venture beyond their village to find work. The villagers earn their living by farming, but they can only grow corn and potatoes because of irrigating problems. Children walk nearly 10 miles down mountainous paths to go to school. Such situations make it difficult for the villagers to have any hope or ambition for a better future - a mindset that has been passed down for generations. The severe winter has brought snow to the mountains. We sent a truck-load of clothes and other goods donated from Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, and Hangzhou before the road ends up covered by the snow, so that the villagers would have sufficient warmth for the winter. In addition, we carried out a workshop to encourage the villagers to support their children’s education. The activity helped them understand how educating the children could have a positive influence on the whole family. It was a meaningful day, well worth all of our efforts. We visited each sponsored child’s home, hoping to get parents’ support for their child’s education. Through effective communication, we hoped to encourage the children to avoid dropping out from school, and we especially focused on the children that we sponsored. We hope that they could keep their mind on studying and strive to learn more so that they can contribute to their family and society. However, the main purpose of our home visits is to get an idea of their situations and to communicate with their parents efficiently and timely, and to keep them focused on their studies. Should any special circumstance occur, our volunteers will communicate with parents and solve the problems as soon as possible.
