LRS Care: Bao Xia
Little Red Scarf is in Lanzhou, Gansu, and Yunnan provinces. We provide financial support and encouragement to children suffering from congenital heart disease. In addition, we provide families with post-operative care and help the children sustain a healthy lifestyle.
Bao Xia came to the LRS Summer Camp this year with a shy and timid personality. By the time camp was over, she left with greater self-confidence and the “The Best Participation” award. Baoxia's change was hugely rewarding to our camp staff and volunteers.
We had last seen her in 2015, during our post-surgery follow up, three years after her operation. When we saw her then, she was nervous and spoke by whispering. When she came to camp, she was obviously taller, but she often sat alone in the corner on the first day.
The summer camp was carefully designed for underprivileged kids. It was filled with various inspiring activities like a mime dance, hospital visit, fashion parade, mountain climbing, and many others. Through the schedule of fun activities, Bao Xia gradually became more open and proactively joined her teammates, wearing her big smile.
The fun days were so enjoyable when we saw Bao Xia’s smile and increased self-esteem. She deserved the Best Participation award. We hope she will continue to improve in the days to come.
The summer camp concluded on the seventh day, and her brother-in-law came to sign her out. Since Bao Xia’s family is part of our Adopt a Family program through LRS Care, we gave the funds to them.
When we visited Bao Xia last year, she said she wanted to be a painter. After seeing a broader world through our camp this year, she may have some new ideas now. Regardless of her aspirations, we and Bao Xia promised to keep in touch.
