Tong Tong is a three year old boy. He was diagnosed with congenital heart disease while visiting a doctor for a common flu symptom three months after his birth. LRS helped give him a healthy heart.
He has two older sisters, one in 2nd grade and one in kindergarten. About four years ago, the family’s third child died as a 3-month-old infant. This unexpected family loss traumatized Tong Tong’s mother, and she manifested epilepsy symptoms with seizures. She visited prominent hospitals and doctors in Lanzhou for a cure, but it was in vain. In order to soothe the symptoms, the doctor put her on a long-term tranquilizer pill. Meanwhile, she tried acupuncture for pain relief, which was recommended by her fellow villagers. She continued using tranquilizers and acupuncture treatment for a few years, and her basic annual medical expense was about 6000 RMB. Her onset of seizures came every two or three months. It became chronic, and according to Tong Tong’s father, the family could only cope with and live with the fact.
Many years ago, his father married and moved out of the home without any inheritance such as land. To support the family, his only choice was to leave home and find labor worker far away. For a long period of time, he was with Ping Chung coal mining company, where the extremely dusty working environment reduced his lungs to half capacity. The salary was just enough for family’s living, but nothing left for saving. Now the reality of epilepsy troubled the family. He decided to quit the labor job and pick up farming work at home this year. He paid 200 RMB annually to lease a 5 mu (0.8 acre) land. He thought that growing wheat and corn, he could be close by the family and could also secure the family’s food supply.
