Little Red Scarf is in Lanzhou, Gansu province and provides financial support and encouragement to children suffering from congenital heart disease. In addition, they provide families with post-operative care and help the children sustain a healthy lifestyle.
It's been six months since Xiao Wen had heart surgery under our Little Red Scarf program. Last week we went to visit him to make sure he was healing properly after surgery.
It was a three hour drive to Xiao Wen's home. His father had rented a small room in a larger town and no longer lives in the countryside. They can barely fit all their possessions since the family can only afford to pay $200 a year for the room. Luckily despite these challenges, Xiao Wen was recovering well. He is still taking it easy, but going back to school and living the life of a busy Chinese student.
After visiting Xiao Wen, we went to his hometown in a village. We took a minibus to the village. We walked up to the mountain. The road is clean and there are green around. It is the most beautiful season in the village.
There are 2 houses made of earth which were built 30 years ago. Xiao Wen’s father greeted us and led us to visit the houses. The rooms were simple, but neatly. There are certificates of merit on the walls which were earned by Xiao Wen and his sister. The family were proud of them. Know we were coming, Xiao Wen’s mother cooked some potatoes and corns. It was drought, so the potatoes looked small. Doctor Gan said they looked cute which made us laugh.
In the kitchen, there’s a pile of crops. It’s my first time to see so much rice, but Xiao Wen’s father told us they could barely sustain a year. Xiao Wen’s parents invited us to eat potatoes. We were moved by their hospitality.
After taking a short rest, we left for Lanzhou. We had to arrive at the county before 6 o’clock and catch the last bus to Lanzhou. Among Little Red Scarf supported families, Xiao Wen’s family is located in relatively traffic convenient place, otherwise, we could not come back to Lanzhou in a day. It was 4 o’clock in the afternoon. The market was finished. Xiao Wen’s father found 2 neighbors who took us to the town with their motorbikes so that we could take a bus to the county.
