The Center improves organizing capacity among peasants via three methods: communication and learning-visits; promotion of mutual-help network among the peasants; and small loans.
We saw a lot of mountains and terraced fields on the way to Guixi, taking in the views full of typical characteristics. When we came to Defeng’s home, the family gave us warm greetings. We were impressed with the village. There was a public pond in the village and roads were built to each household. They also had a garbage incineration pool, playground, basketball court, and exercise equipments, but most of them have fallen into disuse. Weeds grew around the basketball court and the garbage had not been burnt. There were even some wild fruits like pomelo and bayberry growing. There was also a reservoir with clean water and nice views.
Defeng raised about 200 chickens at a place far away from his house. When we came to the chicken farm, many chickens were running from the cage as if to greet us. All the chickens followed Defeng. He did not feed the chickens, because they went in to the fields to find something to eat. They went back to their cage in the evening. He built a shed with plastic cloth near the chicken cage and he stayed in the shed at night to take care of the chickens. The shed leaked with dew when he was sleeping, so he had to cover the quilt with plastic bags. He takes care of his chickens even in the coldest of days.
With these observations, we could not help but think:
The village could have its own cooperative! They can hold some recreational activities, making use of the basketball court. It'll also be better to record the process of chicken raising by videos. Then they can run their publicity through uploading pictures or articles on the internet or through delivering pamphlets at restaurants or agritourism farms. Cooperative can help to better manage the poultry farming.
I hope that young entrepreneurs will not get discouraged when their passions are challenged. They just need a bit of encouragement and hope.
