Grounded on core values of respect, love, and service to the elderly, the Xin Yue Senior Citizen Service Center of Chongqing, China, promotes social work services for senior citizens and builds harmonious living environment for them.
More and more senior citizens are facing illness attack. Illness as high blood pressure and diabetes become popular. To promote senior citizens to learn more about health knowledge and improve their awareness, we carried out sessions themed self-care for chronic illness for senior citizens in the end of May. Two volunteers majored social work in Chongqing University of Technology came to help.
With survey and visits, we admitted senior citizens with similar experiences. Based on their willingness and needs, the volunteers discussed topics as diet and massage therapy with senior citizens during group activities. They led the participants to share their experience and tips to prevent illness recurrence. They helped the participants to gain their members’ support and acquire spirit motivation. With 6 sessions, the members became cooperative and trustworthy. They share actively and discuss knowledge on illness prevention. Granny Quan expressed she learned more about high pressure and mood became better. Now her blood pressure got more stable.
