Grounded on core values of respect, love, and service to the elderly, the Xin Yue Senior Citizen Service Center of Chongqing, China, promotes social work services for senior citizens and builds harmonious living environment for them.
Senior citizens need differently from one to another, though they look the similar. Social workers should listen to them carefully and patiently, knowing their stories and found different needs.
During the senior citizen visits, the social workers got to know Grandpa Tang and Grandpa Yu wished to install denture. They do not have any children or family members, so they hoped our social workers could help them. They expressed their teeth fell out one by one. Now they could only eat soft food and could not speak clearly. To help them to fulfill their wish, our social workers began to found useful information and materials from internet. Finally, a company agreed to help. When the social workers told the senior citizens the good news, they were very happy. Grandpa Tang joked they would eat tough things in the future.
In the afternoon of April 15, the social workers left their work and accompanied 2 senior citizens to the clinic. They consulted doctor and began to accept therapy. After one week therapy, Grandpa Tang’s denture was completed and Grandpa Yu’s was on going.
The hope of the children is dream, for they have opportunity to fulfill. The hope of senior citizens is wish, for they may not have opportunity to fulfill. Social workers should be good listeners and resources coordinators, trying their best to help the senior citizens to fulfill their hopes.
