Xi'an Alliance works to promote a spirit of volunteerism. Many student volunteers are trained to participate in public welfare activities and social work.
We visited Chen Ping’an and his mother again on January 25, 2013. We saw that he was washing vegetable leaves collected from the market. The vegetable leaves are their daily food supply.
Chen was born in 1964 in Henan province. He came to Xi’an with his parents and five sisters when he was a child. When he was young, he was arrested for robbery and sent to jail. His mother faithfully visited him at jail every day, and her dedication moved him deeply.
He once trying committing suicide by swallowing a few needles that penetrated into his thorax, and he has lost his ability to work since then. He still suffers from pain, and collects garbage to make a living and support his family, including his ill mother.
When asked why he would offer his life to save his mother, he replied, “My mother raised me for more than 20 years, and I have nothing to give in return. I can't afford to pay for the treatment for my injury, nor can I help my mom’s illness. If someone can cure my mother, I would like to pay everything, even my life!”
On behalf of the organization, we gave the family flour, oil, and 100 RMB. We hope for the best for Chen and his mother.
