Project: Smart Mom Project for Underprivileged Parents

Mission: We serve underprivileged young people in Hong Kong and the Mainland and seek to change their lives for the better. We support and inspire them to work towards a better life through educational and developmental programmes which nurture the mind, body and spirit. We help them acquire the knowledge and skills they need to realize their full potential and lead happy and productive lives. We work in the spirit of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and we promote these rights in our services.

Description: In Hong Kong, underprivileged mothers are facing hardship in their daily lives and greatly in need of receiving childcare and parenting support. They are new immigrants with no education, low income, and possess hardly any social skills. They lack the knowledge and skills on parenting and nurturing their children. “Smart Mom” empowers mothers from underprivileged families to acquire essential childcare and parenting skills, and to enhance family cohesiveness through parenting workshops, childcare training and parent-child activities. A total of 180 mothers and children will benefit from the programme.

Enhancing Parent-Child Relationship

Many underprivileged mothers are facing difficulties in handling their children’s emotional or behavioral problems. The mothers could become impatient, frustrated and helpless, and family tragedy may eventually occur. $70 will help a mother enroll in training courses to learn practical skills in parenting and improve parent-child relationship.

Building Family Bonding

Many children could hardly enjoy family activities as their parents have to earn their living, and spending money on recreational activities is a luxury for underprivileged families. $40 will enable a family to have a day out and enjoy quality family time together!

Field Updates 2017

This year's program has benefited a total of 209 underprivileged mothers and 47 children.  Over the year, the worker observed that the parents had raised their parent-child relationship as well as exploring self-interests and  broadening their social networks. They were equipped with practical knowledge and skills, and had learnt to seek for help when encountering difficulties. They were willing to spend time to play with their children at home and attend parenting workshops to equip parenting skills and participate inactivities to facilitate harmonious  family life. These changes in mothers are most encouraging! Healthy and happy mothers will rear healthy and happy children
