Description: Dr. Liang and a group of volunteers have been providing care to a leprosy rehab village for over a decade. In China, people with leprosy are sent to isolated places without emotional or physical support. They are essentially deserted by society. Through organizing trips for domestic and foreign volunteers to travel to leprosy villages, the Shalom Leprosy Compassion Ministry provides medical, living, and psychological assistance to this population in need.

Field Updates 2017
Shui Gou Rehabilitation Village
There are 28 recovered patients live at Shui Gou Leprosy Rehabilitation Village of Yunnan province, The village is built in a remote mountainous area and is difficult to access in cold and wet condition. Just before New Year, Dr. Liangping and volunteers delivered rice, rapeseed oil, a set of warm underwear and sock for each patient so they could feel the warmth and love from people as well as hope in the future. Zhushan Rehabilitation Village:
Zhushan Leprosy Rehabilitation Village of Yunnan province situated in the highest elevation of Zhushan Mountain, a very remote corner of Yiliang County. Grandma Xiao Suo is 79 years old this year. She has serious disabilities of hands and feet, and her eye sights are poor. She was delighted to see Dr. Liangping visiting. Dr Liangping's presence is the best gifts and blessings for these lonely people and make them feel they are not forgotten! |
Two solar water heaters installed at Chu Huoshan Leprosy Rehabilitation Village
There are 18 recovered patients at Chu Huoshan Leprosy of Yunnan province. Most of the patients live here for many years. The village is located in the mountain about 300 kilometers in the southwest side of Kunming. It is very difficult to get to the village. With the support of Transparent Fish Fund, 2 Solar water heaters were built there. Part of purpose of the Dr. Liangping's visit was to determine the extent of benefit those water heaters provide. The residents were very grateful for the helps. School financial aids for four grandchildren of the Rehabilitation Village Patients
Transparent Fish has funded 4 children who all are grandchildren of the patients in Yang Juan Gou Rehabilitation Village of Yiliang County in Yunnan Province. Bao Cai and Bao Lian were brother and sister. They grew up in the rehabilitation village. Bao Cai remembered when he was little, the village was very quiet and no children would want to play with him. Only later he realized people were afraid of spreading of the disease so they kept distance from him. Dr. Liangping knew it would be very difficult for this family of five to rely on government subsidy of two seniors, so she applied for the tuition fund from Transparent Fish. A few years past, Bao Cai is in in grade 8 and is already taller than Dr. Liangping. He can also prepare Chinese medicine for his grandma. In this visit, Dr. Liangping brought two pairs of running shoes for the children. They were so excited when they tried them on. Baocai is especially thankful to grandma and grandpa Chao in America and hoping he will become a useful person in the future. |
Field Updates 2015
Solar-Powered Shower Room
This rehabilitation village is located amidst the cold and long winter climates. Due to poor natural conditions only 30 people are living here. Since it is difficult to obtain water here, it is nearly impossible to take a shower. In 2014, Transparent Fish received their strong demand for a solar-powered shower in the village. Through Liangping and many volunteers from the United States, the solar-powered shower room was finally completed! The villagers were incredibly happy and thanks those who have helped to make this possible. |
Reservoir
Since the water this rehabilitation village uses comes from the mountain, they receive a very limited amount of water. Depending on the weather, they can receive as little as no water, especially when it is really sunny outside. These villagers asked Transparent Fish if they could construct a reservoir for them. That way, they can be sure that even during dry seasons, they will still be able to have some drinking water (when there are droughts, they will not have to worry about where to allocate water). Many volunteers came to help build the reservoir. There were even some that came especially from the United States to help. |
Food and Daily Necessities
Most of the people living in the rehabilitation village are old and feeble people that are living in poverty. Liangping, along with many other international organizations and other volunteers, volunteers to send food, rice, blankets, clothing, and other items to these villagers. About 150 people came 26 times in person to help the village out. Since many of the people living in the village often have to go to the mountains in order to cut firewood to cook food, the volunteers decided to buy each of the households a rice cooker. |
Children's Education
Baocai and Baoliang are growing up in the rehabilitation village with their parents and grandparents. The two children have no education beyond the village. Unable to stand the poverty in the village, their mother left them. Their father also went to go search for the mother. This trauma adds to the worsening effects of the leprosy disease in them. This has made their lives very difficult as they can only rely on their grandfather to take care of the whole family. Transparent Fish Fund understands their situation and raised enough money to fund their education. |
Field Updates 2014
Three-Wheeled Motorcycle
Yimen’s rehabilitation village is located inside the mountains of Yunnan Province. It is nearly 20 kilometers from the city with only one 10 km road that is connected to highways. The rehabilitation village has 21 healthy people who are usually out shopping and helping with medical care. They usually rely on friends and family for transportation beyond the village. |
Transparent Fish Fund decided to provide funds for them to have a three-wheeled motorcycle, as this would help them with many difficult issues. On May 2, 2014, Liangping entrusted the village head Wang Guilan to buy a three-wheeled motorcycle. After seeing a new motorcycle, they villagers were full of unspeakable joy.

Food and Daily Necessities
Although the villagers had disabilities, they still had to rely on themselves to cultivate corn, potatoes, and vegetables to live on. Located in the mountains, Chuxiong’s rehabilitation village is very poor. We provided these 22 villagers with 25kg of rice, two bags per person. We also provided milk, meat, confectionery, towels, socks, washing powder, soap, blankets, sheets, and other materials to assist the nine rehabilitation villages that held 117 ill people. Volunteers also donated clothing, toys, books and other items. |
Medical Treatment
In 2014, Liangping and 48 other volunteers visited nine rehabilitation villages to provide free medicine for 117 disease-infected patients. The volunteers offer help in every possible way, along with giving medical checkups for the ill, cleaning ulcers, alleviating the suffering of the ill people, and providing medical help. |
Field Updates 2013
Shalom provides much needed medical care to people with leprosy. Many of these people live in villages that are seldom visited, let alone by doctors. This year Dr. Liang Ping traveled around to many villages, performing check-ups and providing treatment for ulcers.
|
Many of the leprosy villages supported by Shalom are located high in the mountains where the temperature drops quickly during the rainy season. Shalom brings thick clothes to help keep the villagers warm.
|
Shalom also helps to repair and install new appliances in leprosy villages. This year Shalom built solar powered bathrooms and used funds from TFISH to purchase an electric cart, making deliveries to remote locations much easier.
|
Recipients of donations made through TFISH are showing that 100% of donations made this year reached them through Shalom Leprosy.

Field Updates 2012
Prior to meeting TFish Fund, Dr. Liang seriously considered discontinuing her work after years of discouragement from lack of support and financial difficulty.
|
However, in 2011, TFish Fund provided her the moral support and funding to freely continue her work. Through donations, Dr. Liang leads a leprosy care project that provides leprosy patients with nutritional and living support that improve their quality of life.
|
Dr. Liang and volunteers eagerly build relationships with the leprosy patients. One of their favorite acts of service is washing and pampering the patients' oft-disfigured feet, an expression of humility and love. While many might consider lepers as being helpless, Shalom Compassion treats them like kings and queens.
|
Leprosy bacteria attack the nerves in the hands, feet, and around the eyes, rendering them prone to infection and permanent damage. Shalom Compassion volunteers and donors are committed to making daily life easier for the patients by providing ointments for deteriorating limbs and eye glasses.
