This past month, we partnered with Zhengzhou People's Hospital and delivered a public health campaign to increase education about high blood pressure for elderly people. In many more remote towns, people at high risk of disease have little access to information on treatment and prevention. Before the lecture, we had our health practitioners measure everyone's blood pressure, so they have a better understanding of how the information will relate in their individual situation. We distributed informational pamphlets and other reading material and had several experts explained the causes of blood pressure and the effect it has on our health. We ended the class with an informative Q&A since many people in the audience asked questions, particularly on their current health. Our lecturers provided some suggestions for treatment and lifestyle changes. In general, proper diet, balanced nutrition, moderate exercise and minimal use of cigarettes and alcohol are all key factors in maintaining a healthy heart. In order to increase pubic awareness on flu prevention, social workers of Jinshui Social Service Center participated in experiential activity held by the hospital. We had employees and members of the public gather on the first floor and explain procedure of processing patients. There is a new online registration system that the hospital is trying to implement and this was a great opportunity to provide training on some of the ins and outs of the new processes. Then, we had medical experts introduce information on prevention and treatment of common infectious diseases. The presentation allowed people who are not health care practitioners to take a more proactive approach to handling their health care. Cao Zhengtao's mother has a hearing disability and suffers from mental illness. He is deaf and mute, along with his wife, brother, sister in law. His mother has been paralyzed for 4 years. His brother accepted surgery due to lymph cancer last year. Cao Zheng also has to take care of three children. Neighbors and strangers have helped support them in times of need, but Cao Zhengtao is struggling to stay afloat. While we provided financial support for Cao Zhengtao's family, we wanted to give them access to more sustainable funds. We invited a news reporter to raise awareness for their family. Hopefully, more donations and nonprofits can come in and help out the Cao family. The China Health Promotion Foundation and Health Culture and Life Foundation launched at the "Health Cup Project" this summer in China's Ningxia Province. The goal of the project is to bring awareness to a little known problem. Many remote areas reuse plastic bottles as cups .These cups are used over and over again, at times in scorching heat. Our problem may seem simple, but in many areas these public education campaigns can save lives. The project gave out free non-toxic, heat resistance cups to these students. Hopefully, they can help spread the message to their communities, as well as the outside world. Original article written by Fangding Zhang, translated by Maggie Li, edited by Yanyan Zhang The Light of Love Public Welfare Development Center is located in Nanjing, China. It is dedicated to the development of rural education and community public welfare. Our nonprofit “Light of Love” first began in 2008 and completed the registration process on June 15th, 2013. It is the first nonprofit in China to focus solely on drug safety, drug development, and health services. We aim to help everyone take better care of their health, minimize cases of drug over-use, and prevent illnesses, and as a result lower governmental expenses for medical services. Our organization began working with Transparent Fish Fund in 2011, when we started a free lunch program for poorer children at an elementary school in Zunyi, Guizhou with the help of TFish. Since 2011, we have grown together with Transparent Fish Fund. Back then, “Light of Love” was still a high school club working with other nonprofits. That experience was our first time working with “Transparent Fish Fund,” a nonprofit that advocates financial transparency. During 2011 and 2012, while we participated in TFish’s financial training program and worked with them, our organization began to organize our own finances and categorize and record our budget and expenditures. During this time when we focused on finances, we found a great mentor and began to use a great method to keep our finances in order. All of this proved to be very important to the development of our organization later on. TFish’s project funding application is very detailed, which taught us to be specific and thorough and gave us more experience with applying for funds to complete projects later on. In 2012, “Light of Love” began planning to become something more than a high school club, and to register as an official nonprofit organization. Mr. Dai Xianwei, who is the person in charge of our organization, asked Mr. Ping Chao for advice regarding launching a nonprofit. At that time, “Light of Love” was experiencing hardships such as being unable to pay our employees. Mr. Chao agreed to cover the administration costs of “Light of Love” and to help Dai Xianwei start his nonprofit. From this point on, the organization began to develop along the right path. In December of the same year, Dai Xianwei again received Transparent Fish Fund’s invitation to attend a financial training session in Beijing. This time, Mr. and Mrs. Chao and Director Nguyen all came to Beijing Normal University to host the training session. Because “Light of Love” had just registered as a nonprofit, Dai Xianwei came to from Nanjing to Beijing with a lot of questions that needed to be answered. Upon meeting Mr. Chao, Xianwei received monetary support for his administration costs. Xianwei also discussed with Director Nancy Nguyen about the future development of our organization. Director Nguyen told Xianwei that since he is now the person in charge of his organization and that since the organization is also now an official nonprofit, he and the organization would need to continue learning new skills and trying to find a method for self-sustaining development. If we can achieve that, our organization will grow stronger. Two years have passed since then, and “Light of Love” continues to mature as an organization. Along the way, our development has been aided by the strict requirements and helpful training of these partner nonprofits. We would like to thank Transparent Fish Fund for supporting “Light of Love”’s initial development and for steering us onto the path of financial transparency, allowing our organization to go further and grow larger. In addition, they provide families with post-operative care and help the children sustain a healthy lifestyle. We have been deeply touched by Galan’s story. The Little Red Scarf Care Team calls Galan’s family every month to see how she is doing. Last month, her family’s goat (a gift from LRS Care Team), gave birth to a baby lamb. What great news! Recently, an American donor, Yanyan, donated another 600 yuan to Galan. After checking to make sure that we have the right card number, we remitted the donation to Galan’s family today. Hopefully this donation from across the Pacific can warm the hearts of Galan and her family as winter falls. Today we remitted donations to two families, both of them providing us with Agricultural Credit Cooperative card numbers. The handling charge was very cheap, showing how the Agricultural Credit Cooperative is truly about helping the farmers. In addition, they provide families with post-operative care and help the children sustain a healthy lifestyle. The first time I met Xiao Yan was on October 13 of 2014, she just accepted the surgery. She was admitted by the hospital on October 12. When her father heard she did not need to take injections, he took her to visit their relatives in Kunming. The doctor called him at night and told him the time of surgery, so we did not see Xiao Yan before the surgery. In the afternoon, I met Xiao Yan’s father at the rest district of the ward. A man was walking towards me who was Xiao Yan’s father. Following him, I came to Xiao Yan’s ward. She was lying on the bed and looking at me with alert. When I ask her if her wound hurt, she shaked her head. After I took one photo, she lied down and fell asleep. I did not ask more questions. According to her father, she was found congenital heart disease in a school physical examination. They had no idea about the disease before the emamination. Then he took the child to different hospitals and submitted medical aid application to several orgnizations, but received no reply. I did not see mother’s certificate of regiatration, so I asked her father. He laughed and said her biological mother had left the family long ago and he had not registrated with her stepmother. Feeling at loss, I looked at Xiao Yan. She was lying still and the quilt covered her face. When I verified each item on the form, I found the difference in family members. When I asked him again, she laughed and said his new wife gave birth to another 3 children who had not been registrated. The family has total 6 children. I could not help shaking head when I got to know the truth. Xiao Yan is the eldest of them. She is 13 and the youngest one is 2. The family of 10 depends on 1 mu of field and grows some corn and potatos. The grandmother was disabled in right hand and cannot take care of herself. The family has to take care of another 77-year-old woman without family. The burden of the big family falls on a man who does temps. The difficult of the family is beyond imagination. I tried to suggest that he has enough children and more children would bring more burdens for the family. Her father agreed and said he had accepted birth control operation last year. Shalom Leprosy Compassion Ministry: People with leprosy are sent to isolated villages where they are abandoned and forgotten by society. The Shalom Leprosy Compassion Ministry has a special place in its heart for these people and organizes groups of volunteers to travel to villages plagued with leprosy in order to provide medical, living, and psychological assistance. The Shalom Leprosy Compassion Ministry is located in Kunming, Yunnan. August is the rainy season in Yunnan Province, while the earthquake at Ludian on August 3rd attracted attention from international media. Due to the lack of resources, services offered by Divine Grace is limited in Zhaoton city, especially so at its epic center of Ludian county. Divine Grace asked its volunteers in Kunming to partner with their respective companies or community organizations to provide clothing, food and donations to those in the disaster areas. In August, Divine Grace visited two rehabilitation villages in Yiliang county : Takeyama rehabilitation village and ArzeYing rehabilitation village. We use a set of photos below to illustrate these two visits in August: First, the visit of Takeyama rehabilitation village, Yiliang County On August 2nd, Divine Grace received a phone call from Jinyuan Xu of Takeyama rehabilitation village. He was cheated $1,200 yuan and this loss caused him anxiety, anger and created some health problems as result. In addition, corn in the field is ready for harvest and they need help. Therefore, volunteers from Divine Grace decided to pay them a visit. Jinyuan Xu was deceived by a woman who claimed she was working for charity. This woman gained Xu’s trust first and then replaced Xu’s money with fake money. A normal person can easily identify this is fake money by touching or visual check. However, Xu’s poor vision and with both hands handicapped is unable to tell the money is real or fake. This $1,200 yuan was the fund saved by Xu over the years and he planned to ask Divine Grace for assistance when the time is appropriate for a trip to Dali and Lijiang. Unfortunately now this fund was defrauded. We condemn this woman for deceiving such a poor, disabled elderly. Ping Liang felt sad about what happened and comforted Xu. She explained to Xu how to identify the money is real or fake. At the same time, Ping Liang donated $600 yuan to Xu to partially offset his loss. Also promised Xu she will come back again with rice for Xu during the mid-autumn festival. Time really flies. It is now time to blog again. This morning I was in a meeting with Tang, Yoyo, and Shaorong, in which we discussed our main daily objectives. Afterwards, we went back to work. I will be waiting with Ms. Cao and Ms. Liu at the train station to welcome back Little Ye, who will be returning home. Little Ye and his family arrived at noon. Although I have only seen Little Ye and his parents on East Villagers, I recognized them immediately after they came through the station gates. Glasses sure help. We are all so happy with Little Ye’s extremely successful recovery. Little Ye’s father and mother could not express their gratitude in words. Little Ye’s father said that by next week, they would have stayed in Beijing for five whole months. After the long five months, the couple are very happy to have back a healthy son. We hurried to the hospital after picking up Little Ye. Another child is going to arrive at the hospital today. We went to the hospital ward to visit Little Ye’s and Little Jie’s parents. I first met Little Ye the day before his operation. Today, we meet with Little Ye again as he prepares to be discharged tomorrow. We are filled with happiness seeing Little Ye’s complete recovery and his parents’ smiling faces. In the afternoon, I went to two banks to remit money to two volunteers, one in Shanghai and one in Beijing. I spent a long time waiting in line at the banks, and it was almost 5pm when I returned to the office. I still need to consummate three children’s information. Time to work hard!
