LRS Care: Baolan

9/29/2015

Little Red Scarf is in Lanzhou,  Gansu and Yunnan province and provides financial support and encouragement to children suffering from congenital heart disease. In addition, they provide families with post-operative care and help the children sustain a healthy lifestyle.

While on my usual hospital visit, I encountered Baolan in the corridor, where he was going back and forth.  Seeing her thin little frame I began to chat with her. Through our conversation I learned about her situation – Baolan is under the guardianship of her uncle, and came to the hospital in Lanzhou to have surgeru. However, her uncle was only able to borrow $10,000 for the cost of the hospital stay, so the surgery costs have not been completely covered.

Baolan’s family has three people. They life in Gansu Yellow River Stone Forest, which has become a tourist area in recent years. Baolan’s father was born deaf and is mentally slower. Her mother was small and sickly from the time she was young. However, the family did not know she was suffering from congenital heart disease until she gave birth to Baolan.

On April 1st this year, 4th-grade Baolan went to school as usual. But, because she did not complete her work, a teacher picked up a broom and hit her. As a result of the beating, Baolan’s abdomen and leg had multiple soft tissue injuries. She also had  a subcutaneous hematoma. Over a month after she had been admitted to the hospital, they discovered that Baolan also suffers from congenital heart disease. Baolan’s medicine costs are covered by the teacher, and Baolan began to cry when she saw the teacher today. Although the beating took place more than three months ago, Baolan’s legs are still bruised.

Gansu: My Beloved Home Province

Written by Dayong
(1995 – July 2, 2015)

Editor’s Note: Dayong loved to write, and he wanted to help others. We were fortunate to receive this article from him before he passed away from congenital heart disease at age 20. You can read more about him in Remembering Dayong.

Geography and Climate

Gansu province is in the geographic center of China. However, people commonly think of it as being in the remote part of China, in the vast northwest territory. Indeed, this land is broad with undulating terrain. The historical Silk Road runs through this narrow province. With an altitude of 4,000 feet, it is bordered by even higher mountain ridges on both sides. Gansu has a typical arid climate with seasonal winds in summer and winter. This environment has shaped Gansu culture, which is a simple, ancient pearl in the northwest.

LRS Care: Xiao Zhi

9/22/2015

Little Red Scarf is in Lanzhou, Gansu province and provides financial support and encouragement to children suffering from congenital heart disease. In addition, they provide families with post-operative care and help the children sustain a healthy lifestyle.

In May, 2014, Xiao Zhi  was able to have congestive heart surgery completed when he  was five months old with the help of Little Red Scarf.  Now he is one and six months old.  He is able to run, jump, and also very adorable.
His home town is Min Xian Mei Chuan Jian where the disastrous earthquake happened on July 22.  Xiao Zhi was born after the earthquake and has been living in the tent from birth.  Now it is two years after the earthquake, but his home was a mess everywhere.  The damaged house was still not taken down.  Half of the wall was collapsed.  It was quite frightening to see the collapsed roof was simply supported by a stick.

Senior Center: Hymn to Mothers

9/22/2015

Grounded on core values of respect, love, and service to the elderly, the Xin Yue Senior Citizen Service Center of Chongqing, China, promotes social work services for senior citizens and builds harmonious living environment for them

Mother’s Day is coming. We held activity themed on Hymn to Mothers for 65 senior citizens by cooperating with volunteers from Qinglong Road Primary School.

During the activity, the students were preparing their performances seriously with the help of their teachers and parents. Looking at the innocent and lovely children, the senior citizens were infected. They could not help smiling. 2 little hosts announced the open of the activity. The students not only brought gifts, but expressed their best wishes to the senior citizens. Various performances were done one by one. The senior citizens enjoyed them very much. They gave warm applause and were amused by the children. After the performances, the children presented their best wishes, “happy festival to grannies!”

When the activity came to the end, the children were seeing the senior citizens’ leave. Though the children are young, they showed their love and sense of responsibility, which aroused our esteem. We hope they will grow up happily and healthfully.

Henan Volunteers: We are Volunteers

9/22/2015

According to their motto - “Love, truth, and service to community” - Xingyang Volunteer Federation works to enhance people’s sense of social responsibility through providing them various volunteer opportunities. The office is in Xingyang, Henan province.

In Henan, there are passionate volunteers who dedicate their love to those who need help. I am one of them.

In June, the temperature is getting high, but there are people who still go out early in the morning and return late in the evening. They are cleaners. To create a clean and environment, they keep working even in the scorching weather. To gratitude their dedication, we launched an activity---sending drinking water to them.  At 23 garbage transfer stations, there are free tea supply sties. The cleaners could drink green bean water or tea. I and other volunteers went to the sites to send water. The remotest became less cared. To let every cleaner drink water, I go to the southern and northern sites in the morning. Some friends said I don’t have to do that, because I would be tired to go so far away. I said nothing and I understood I am willing to do what I love, no matter how hard it is.

After the spring festival holiday, I got to know there are a brother and sister in Zhoutong Village who need help. They only person they could count on is their old father. Their mother passed away not long after the birth of the boy. When other babies were feeding by their mothers, the brothers and sisters had to be fed by the milk of a goat. When 2 dirty thin children with tangled hair appeared in front of me, I deeply understood the children without mother. The scene was just like in the movies or TV. If I tell you there are such miserable people nowadays, you would be shocked and moved. I could not help hugging the children. I gave the children all the cash I have. In the following days, I visited the children with gifts, bringing new sheets or clothes for them and cooked a meal for them. The picture seemed fixed. It seemed we are a happy family.

It is normal to help to do clean, cut hair or wash feet for the senior citizens in nursing house. Their smiles became the source of the happiness of my life. Building shelters for the needy children, supporting their tuition and caring their livings became indispensable in our lives. I am proud of my dedication for years. Dedication is a kind power which would spire us to develop. To dedicate passion without being paid back. To dedicate a sincere and pure heart is the source of my happiness. In Henan, I learned thankfulness, trust, unselfish help and love. My life is full of energy and the direction of life became clear.

Adopt a Family: Post-Surgery, Poverty Relief Care

9/21/2015

When Transparent Fish Fund first started in 2008, we had two goals: to provide both heart surgery and poverty relief care for the poorest children in Gansu suffering from congenital heart disease.

Heart Surgery Program Launched

Because of the critical need for heart surgery, we started with the Little Red Scarf Heart Surgery program first. At that time there were 6,000 children in Gansu with CHD. Most of them wouldn’t survive beyond 10 years. Our dream was to save 1,000 lives and for our friends to join us in helping the rest.

1,000+ Lives Saved

In March 2014 we were delighted to reach our goal of saving 1,000 lives. As we celebrated that milestone, we also recognized the growing involvement from the community. Our friends and family joined us in this mission, covering all families since then. We were even able to expand the heart surgery efforts to Yunnan province, helping build the local hospital capacity and training staff to detect congenital heart disease symptoms in newborns there.

Longwan Home: Happy May Day

9/20/2015

PictureGirls in nice shoes
Longwan Caring Home is located in Dahua County, which was listed as one of the poorest counties in Guangxi Province. Longwan Caring Home is a big family consisting of orphans, single parents, and abandoned children. The normal expense of the Home is sustained by plantation, breeding, and small business.

May day holidays were over and most of the children stayed in Longwan. Many loving people came to Longwan and held activities for the children who sensed the warmth from the society.

Children in kindergarten changed their shining lovely shoes which were donated by a volunteer and her friends.

A foundation brought a batch of new toys for the children. Toys are best friends of the children. Our children were excited to see new toys.

4 members of Happy Group came to Longwan again. The Group is made by university students. They have visited Longwan and have been doing voluntary teaching since winter semester of 2013. 4 members came again and brought watermelon for the children. They visited the children in the hospital and tutored their school assignments. They spent a happy and nice day together.

Big brothers and sisters coming from Dahua, They visited the children during their school holidays. 2 voluntary teachers from Qingdao University were tutoring the children during evening classes.

It was a happy May Day. The children had new shoes and toys. They got love and cares from loving people. They taught the children to be thankfulness. We are a happy family .

Xi’an Volunteer: Rural Children’s Dreams

9/20/2015

Picture
Xi’an Alliance works to promote a spirit of volunteerism. Many student volunteers are trained to participate in public welfare activities and social work. The main office is in Xi’an, China.

At 8:00 in the morning, we were heading to Lantian. The weather was lovely and we were singing songs while we were driving to Yuchuan village of Lantian.

When the vehicle drove on the mountainous road, we were surprised by the views in front of us. The mountains were covered with white snow. After 2 hours ride, we arrived at the village. The village secretary had been waiting for us. Steeping on the soft snow, we were on our way to the children’s homes.

After an hour’s walking, we came to one of the children’s home. The rooms were simple and plain. The walls are dark and the child seemed shy. He answered our questions with flush face. His grandparents helped him with some questions.

The family did not know who we are and what we are going to do. They had thought we had been sent by the government. I corrected their understanding and introduced our organization to them. And I also told them our purpose—to donate 500RMB to the student as school subsidies. Obviously, they knew nothing about non-profit organization. Holding the money, the child said, “thank you for your kindness and I will study hard.”

On leaving, the child said nothing, but stood at the door and was seeing us leaving. When we turned around, we still saw he was standing there. He waved to us when he saw we turned around. For a moment, I understood the hope of the child. Our love could help them to fulfill their dreams to step outside the mountains.

Henan Volunteers: Benefits of Public Services

9/11/2015

Picture
According to their motto - “Love, truth, and service to community” - Xingyang Volunteer Federation works to enhance people’s sense of social responsibility through providing them various volunteer opportunities. The office is in Xingyang, Henan province.

It has been 7 years since I joined Henan. I found the public services brought a lot of goodness while attending activities.

Firstly, I became open-minded. If you are simple, the world will become simple. As a lyric goes, ordinary is the truth.

Secondly, I am happier and life became meaningful. When I left my job, there’s no one to speak with. Thanks to the public service activities, I knew many people. When people get to know you, they would like to talk and communicate with you. The nature of people is kind.

Thirdly, I learned a lot and my comprehensive capacities have been improved. I got to know many new things and attended activities. With the activities, I knew the society more and the difficulties of life. I am satisfied from what I am doing for people.

Fourthly, I made many friends through public activities. We have the same goal and make efforts together. They are valuable in my life. We tried our best to make contribution to the society, which may change your life. Thanks to the friends with positive altitude, my view for the world changed and I am stepping forward to the new life.
