(The running water in China is too polluted to drink directly, so people tend to drink boiled water.) Before dawn, students living in the mountainous areas are already on their way to school. The school is far away from their homes, so they have to eat lunch somewhere near the school. They often use a plastic bottle to hold water, but hot water usually causes it to become bent out of shape. Many children even drink raw water which contains a lot of germs and microbes. Their health is thus endangered. At the end of 2013, volunteers from the Association visited several schools with thermos bottles donated by the Foundation Management Association for Health Life and Culture. I remember seeing the shocked reactions on the children's faces when they learned that plastic bottles release harmful materials when they come in contact with high temperatures. We believe they will not use plastic bottles to hold hot water again. All of our volunteers truly care about the health of the children and we all hope they will not drink raw water in the future. The students received their thermoses and stood in line silently to express their gratitude. They are the future of our country and we hope to create a bright future for them with our love. At 7:45PM on July 22, a 6.6 magnitude earthquake hit at the border of Mian and Zhang counties. People living in the quake-stricken areas underwent severe psychological trauam. They were still in a panic even after a few months had passed. On October 14, 2013, Ding Xi Loving Public Welfare Association organized a volunteer service team for counseling. The team visited Dagu Primary School and Lalu Primary School, offering counseling for the aged and the children, and bringing them goods for winter use. It’s the first time that our city has sent a counseling assistance team. After a two hour long ride, we arrived at the Dagu Primary School. Walking into the school, we heard gales of laughter and applause from tents that served as classrooms. Volunteers gave the children psychological counseling. The volunteers then put on interactive activities for the students. They also started some group activities and distributed stationary, all of which will hopefully encourage the children to regain confidence in a bright future. The activity in total provided 20 days of psychological counseling services to about 1000 children and senior citizens. These volunteer activities at the quake-stricken schools were the first steps in complete psychological assistance. Hopefully, the volunteer team can do even more in quake-stricken areas. We hope everyone affected by the earthquake can get back to their normal life and rebuild their homes with a healthy mentality. My experience volunteer teaching over the past year has left me with a lot of memories. During the whole process, I was moved around a lot. For more than 20 days, volunteer teachers from all over the country worked together and got along well with each other. We helped many children with our love. I will continue to lead more loving people to go to remote areas and bring care to children. Let me demonstrate some of those moments with pictures: Original article written by Jingtian Yao, translated by Maggie Li, edited by Yanyan Zhang |
