Shalom Leprosy Compassion Ministry: Project Tracking in August

9/30/2013

People with leprosy are sent to isolated villages where they are abandoned and forgotten by society. The Shalom Leprosy Compassion Ministry has a special place in its heart for these people and organizes groups of volunteers to travel to villages plagued with leprosy in order to provide medical, living, and psychological assistance. The Shalom Leprosy Compassion Ministry is located in Kunming, Yunnan.

August is the rainy season which makes it rather difficult to visit isolated villages plagued with leprosy in the mountains, especially if you do not have a proper vehicle.

On August 3rd, Andrey, a volunteer, and the Devids came to stay in Dali for a few days, hoping to visit a leprosy village during their stay. Since Shalom had been planning to visit Stone Forest Village, and the weather was nice, they decided to visit Stone Forest Village. It start to rain heavily when we almost reached the village, but Andrey is a good driver, and we had a powerful jeep. We finally arrived at the village. The following pictures show our visit.

In response to the demand from the lepers in A’ziyin Village, we visited the village again on August 17th. This time, we brought clothes to them. A’ziyin is located in the mountains, and the temperature drops quickly during rainy season. The lepers hoped we could bring thick clothes for them to keep warm.

Ark Welfare: Relief Bag Distribution in Guangxi Province

9/21/2013

Ark Welfare is a non-profit established in Hechi City, Guangxi, that encourages people to get involved in public service and respond to the needs of their communities.

On August 27, 2013, volunteers from Ark Welfare distributed 113 relief bags to He County, a place that was stricken by the flood. Their goal was to ease the psychological damage inflicted on the children as a result of the flood.

At 10:30 in the morning, the children and their parents were waiting at the village committee. Most of them came from the villages in the mountains. It was difficult to reach this place as the roads were destroyed by the flood.

The parents help their children to sign up for help. They were happy though the sun was scorching on their heads. The children live far away from each other, so it took more time to organize the distribution.

After taking their bags, the children could not wait to open them immediately. At 12:30 PM, the distribution was completed. They went back home happily with their bags.

These are 3 of the 6 senior high students who were admitted to universities
Longwan Caring Home is located in Dahua County, which was listed as one of the poorest counties in Guangxi Province. Longwan Caring Home is a big family consisting of orphans, single parents, and abandoned children. The normal expense of the Home is sustained by plantation, breeding, and small business.

August is harvest time. The farmers are expecting their harvest, and the shepherds are expecting to find rich and good pasture. They can't help but imagine the happiness that will guide the sheep to the rivers. We are expecting a big harvest from our work. We hope the children will fulfill their dreams one day. We try our best to cultivate their minds and we believe our efforts will be rewarded.

Little Red Scarf:A Brand New Life

9/21/2013

Little Red Scarf is in Lanzhou, Gansu province and provides financial support and encouragement to children suffering from congenital heart disease. In addition, they provide families with post-operative care and help the children sustain a healthy lifestyle.

Lily, another girl from Ya’an, Sichuan province, was admitted to the hospital together with Lele. Lele is one year older than Lily, but Lily looks much taller than Lele. Looking at Lily's purple skin, Lele’s parents said, they were reminded of Lele before the surgery.

On July 21, Lele and Lily had the surgery at the same time. It took 10 hours and 30 minutes for the surgery. The parents comforted each other. They chose to believe that the longer time spent in surgery translated to a more successful operation.

The surgery went well. For two days, the doctor did not stitch Lele's chest in order to avoid complications. When her blood pressure began to increase, the doctor sewed the wound. The doctor said he would try his best so that she would recover well.

Changzhou Volunteers Association: First Time Visiting City

9/16/2013

In Changzhou city, Jiangsu province, with the principles of “serve the society, dedicate love, help others and delight ourselves, Changzhou Volunteers Association actively promotes volunteerism around the city.

Half a month ago, 6 children from a village in Yunnan left their home in the mountains and flew to Changzhou.

They are from the Yi ethnic minority, and this was their first time leaving their homes and taking a plane. Meanwhile, the volunteers had prepared many great activities for them. They created an interactive curriculum and planned tours for every day of the visit. Some community members knew the children were coming, and they gave the children a warm welcome.  Though the children were not familiar with life in the city, they experienced something different, and they were thrilled to attend the games and activities.

In 10 days, the children visited the museum, parks, and the zoo. They also had a day to experience family life in Changzhou. The itinerary was full each day. The students obviously valued this experience very much and tried to do as much as possible in one day.

Time flew by and suddenly, it was time to leave.

Farewell, children, we hope you have a bright future.

Loving Public Welfare Association: Project Tracking in July

9/14/2013

Loving Public Welfare Association of Anding District,Dingxi City of Gansu Province is consisted of teachers and students from universities, which is engaged in helping vulnerable groups by means of voluntary services.

We completed 3 things in July:

Part I: 2013 summer voluntary teaching

The volunteers had ten days of military training and teaching. The activity not only enhanced their knowledge, but increased their soldier-like qualities. I was responsible for the military training throughout the entire time. I was stern, but my students were still reluctant to leave when it was over.

Xi’an Alliance: Investigation at Ganjiaba Village, Lantian County

9/14/2013

Xi’an Alliance works to promote a spirit of volunteerism. Many student volunteers are trained to participate in public welfare activities and social work. The main office is in Xi’an, China.

It’s a new semester. The children in the city are prepared for the coming days, but the children in the village are worried about their school expenses. Though compulsory education is free, they still have to pay for books, stationery, food, etc.

The Ganjiaping village is located in the mountains without many surrounding fields. The households are sparsely distributed. Infrastructure and communication is quite poor. We visited 9 households, but we had to walk almost 30 li. Because of the lack of arable land, most of the people work in the city, leaving children, women and elderly people in the village. Most of the children lack a sense of belonging and security.

It's very hard for a family to sustain itself, especially when there’s a school-age child in the family. The school is not nearby, and it often takes a few hours to get there so most of the students have to stay at the school, which increases expenses. Education is very important for a child so our focus is on the children's school and living expenses.

Longwan Caring Home: Spanish Friends

9/12/2013

Longwan Caring Home is located in Dahua County, which was listed as one of the poorest counties in Guangxi Province. Longwan Caring Home is a big family consisting of orphans, single parents, and abandoned children. The normal expense of the Home is sustained by plantation, breeding, and small business.

After a friend introduced us to Mr. Louise and Miss Zhang Yu from the Spanish Investment Service Company, they visited us on August 9. They brought an investment plan for us to look at. One idea is for them to support education for children in remote areas. We also invited Director Tang and her staff from the Foreign Affair Office, and together we received our guests from Spain.

From our foreign friends, we realized that there are no borders to charity.  Love brings people together from different countries, even though they might have different skin colors and speak different languages. We hope our children will enjoy their childhood. We hope that everything goes smoothly and  that love will be with our children.
