Gansu Care: Winter Coats Distribution Project Overview

Lanzhou Jingcheng Public Service Center is located in Gansu Province and mainly serves the disadvantaged groups in society, helping them renew their confidence in life and build up their self-reliance. Services include: 1) Care for the rural children left behind 2) Care for children after surgery 3) Concern for the old public service areas 4) Carrying out a variety of public training, consulting, and advocacy activities.

209 Students at 5 Elementary Schools Receive Winter Coats

In September 2016, we cooperated with a nonprofit organization called Yue Shi Tuan and asked them to help us select five elementary schools in the poor county of Qin An. (Yue Shi Tuan is a nonprofit organization in the county of Qin An. They work together with the local people and businesses to help poor children get into school, to take care of seniors, to provide severe illness aids, etc.)

Recommended by our partner Yue Shi Tuan, we finally selected the following 5 schools to give away winter clothes: Yang Po Wan Elementary School and Gao Wan Elementary School in Wang Pu Township, Wu Zhuang Elementary School and He Li Elementary School in Ye Bao Township, and Song Gou Elementary School in Guo Jia Town, totaling 209 people.

Guan Ying was responsible for earlier communications with Yue Shi Tuan, finding manufacturers to make the winter clothes, and providing samples.

On October 12-13, Guan Ying, Ai Ju, Wang Li, and the volunteers of Yue Shi Tuan visited the five schools in Qin An County and brought over samples of the selected winter clothes. This was the first school visit for the "Warm Winter" project, a project to take care of poor students in elementary school. The main purpose of this visit was to confirm how many students are in the school, and the amount and sizes of the clothes.

Finding a Coat Manufacturer

After the visit, we started to write reports. Ai Ju was responsible for reporting to the Foreign Affairs Office. Guan Ying was responsible for purchasing the clothes. Because the manufacturer we contacted before already started making summer clothes (through ordering winter clothes this time, we found out that many manufactures usually make winter clothes during the summer), Guan Ying, Ai Ju, and Yun Yun, after some discussion, chose a manufacturer in East Market (East Market specializes in ordering and wholesale).

The primary color of the clothes is “Chinese Red”, which is festive and radiant. 20 days later, on November 9th, the winter clothes arrived. We put our logo on them, and eventually shipped them to the destinations.

Distribution in November

On November 16th, Yun Yun and Wang Li, came to Qin An again to do some preparations. They sorted and packed the clothes for the different schools to make the next day's event run more smoothly.

On November 17-18, Yun Yun, Wang Li, and the volunteers of Yue Shi Tuan distributed the clothes to the 5 schools in Qin An County. Meanwhile, we also brought oil pastels and pencil cases to give to the children. The volunteers of Yue Shi Tuan prepared a papercutting classes for the children.
