Original Article Written by Rui Shu, translated by Maggie Li, edited by Yanyan Zhang With the support of TFish, this project aims to support housewives from a poverty-stricken village in Huining county, Gansu province by providing microloans. It will promote income and provide development opportunities to women in the villages. This lady's name is Ma Yuying. She is 48 and has 3 children. Her son is in Lanzhou Communication University and her 2 daughters have gotten married. Ma Yuying says she bought 2 sheep with the 2,000 RMB ($300 USD) loan. The two sheep gave birth to lambs and she sold them for 1,500 RMB ($225 USD). She used the money and her savings to open a little store that sells daily necessities. This is the store they built with about 20,000 RMB ($3,000 USD). It has been in operation for 2 weeks. When we asked about prices, she said they sell things cheaper than in the city, which benefits the villagers. We also conducted group interviews of the women. Some of the men also came. The women gave their seats to the men, which is a long-established custom in the village. However, we insisted that the women should sit on the chairs while the men sat on the ground. ![]() Little Red Scarf is in Lanzhou, Gansu and Yunnan province and provides financial support and encouragement to children suffering from congenital heart disease. In addition, they provide families with post-operative care and help the children sustain a healthy lifestyle. Zhuan Zhuan is a young mother who had a successful heart surgery in May 2013 with aid from Little Red Scarf. Two months after the surgery, on July 22 that same year, a 6.6 magnitude earthquake shook the area and made the family’s old house dangerous to live in. Zhuan Zhuan’s family and the local villagers were able to start rebuilding their homes after receiving some government support. To the villagers, rebuilding new houses is an uphill battle; the former yard is a mound of sand. Zhuan Zhuan’s father had personally done a year’s worth of digging and preparation to rebuild. Transportation is not convenient in the area; there is only one bus route each day into Tang Xian city and if you take the wrong one, you need to take three other buses just to get there. It takes over five hours on a dusty road, or half a day to get to town. Going to Lanzhou requires an entire day’s worth of travel. "Thanksgiving, after all, is a word of action." (W.J. In rural Asia, humble farmers are rejoicing in the harvest they've reaped for the year. As we enter the holiday season, let's remember to keep the heart of giving central to the celebration. We give thanks for your wonderful support and all that we've been able to accomplish together. May you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving. View the original e-newsletter.

It’s the time that we can access to all knowledge, but there are still some children who cannot read anything apart from their curriculum. The only books that they access are their text books which company them all day long. I could not help feeling sad from their sincerely eyes. They read their text books day after day. They have nothing else to read. Even though, they still eager to learn. They focused on what I have told them beyond text books with curious and eyes wide open. I would like to describe them as hungry as a wolf, fearing their pray would be rubbed. Yes, knowledge is their food and books are their fields. If you want the field to be more fertile, you have to read more books. However, it is a luxury hope for them. It’s difficult for them to find an extra-curriculum book to read. They would be greatly pleased if there’s a book to read. All students in a class would share it. Because of poverty, they could not afford to buy books. Because of poverty, they had to spend their time with text books. Some of children have been left at home, for their parents had to work in the city. There’s no one to care their study. With books, we know and feel the world. When the children are facing the situation of no-books to read, we should do we can to help and make their life better. We initiated the activity named Books for Development, which aims to help the children to develop with the aid of “speechless teacher”.
