It is the 5th week that the smiling face program has been done. There’s a birthday celebration for a child—Fu Lixia this week. She attends grade 11 in Henan.  We have been planning on how to celebrate her birthday for a few days. I woke up my daughter early in the morning and asked her to go with me. We celebrated birthday for Fu Lixia’s brother last week. The brother and sister were cleaning their room when we arrived on 9:00am. They were expecting us.

We had known the family for 3 years. The volunteers received information provided by village health worker and visited the family immediately. I participated in the visit and knew the family. At that time, her father had been suffering from stomach cancer and was about to die. Her mother was handicapped and mentally ill. Fu Lixia just completed her grade 8 and her younger brother was in primary school. It was hard to imagine what the family would become if her father was dead.

The village committee also reported the family to the relevant sectors of the government. The family received minimum allowances soon. Her father’s medical expenses were covered. Finally, her father was dead a few months after we had visited.

After visiting and discussing with my family, I wanted to adopt Fu Haiyang, the younger brother, for Fu Lixia was 15 and she could take care of herself as well as her mother. Fu Haiyang was still young and needed care. Their relatives did not agree, so I had to give up. The connections between the children and I were built.

Since the first session of Taiji had been open in  2015, social workers developed new knowledge about Taiji. Zhaobao Taiji is a sport that benefits for the health. It can improve immunity. Zhaobao Taiji was created by Mr. Wu Guodong which is easy to learn and fits for beginners.

People are enthusiasm about learning Taiji. On March 6, the 2nd session of Taiji class has been launched. Whoever donated 100RMB for Xingyang, they could learn for free. 8 social workers donated and participated in study.

At 7:00pm, participants gathered in the little garden and started to practice Taijin together. The trainer gave them patient instructions and the trainees learned from each other. Trainer teaches Taiji for free, participants donate money and students from poor families are benefited. It’s a win-win- win mode, which each one found his/her way to be involved in public welfare.

This year I have had the opportunity to participate in the 2016 Childhood Summer Camp event. I got up at four o'clock in the morning and outside were volunteers already at their division who had gotten there as early as five in the morning.

Today, I look forward to accompanying five children as a volunteer. Over time, the children arrived one after another. Our group’s first child was Chumeng a shy and beautiful little girl. Following her arrival were Qiuling, Yunling, Tianci, and Xinge.

At Nine o'clock, the hot weather left everyone sweaty, but children were all very excited bcause they were about to start playing. Because people split amongst three groups, we are the last group. We took the children will go to a cool place to play and readily took some pictures of the children whom all have smiling faces full of fun.

Henan Volunteers: Smile with Tears

Celebrating a 10-Year-Old's Birthday

The weather was beautiful with bright sunshine, bringing a positive vibe to many people. Under the rays of sunshine, our volunteers finally arrived at Guangwu Zhaiyu village to help ten-year-old Chengfeng celebrate her birthday. Due to unfamiliar roads, we arrived thirty minutes later than the scheduled time. The child’s mother was at the entrance of the village waiting for us. Not wanting Chengfeng to wait any longer, we went to her house as soon as we got out of the car.

When Chengfeng saw us, a huge smile spread across her face as we brought the cake to her. After we sliced the cake, this sweet child gave the first slice to her father, who has been bedridden for two years now due to a car accident. Seeing the child feeding her smiling father, we were all touched by the scene.

A common saying in China is that “children who live in poverty grow up faster.” However, from this scene, we saw that it is actually the children that undergo hardships who become wiser. Chengfeng's mother proudly told us that a few days ago, Chengfeng placed first on an exam in class and got an award. We were all very happy for her.

Bedridden, Depressed Father

After finishing the cake, we talked with Chengfeng’s father. He told us that he had once gone through a period of depression, even going so far as thinking to end his own life. Seeing his current state, how the man who used to be the main provider of the house was unable to even get out of his bed, we understood his feelings. We all encouraged him to continue on with his life for the sake of his children and family. He nodded his head as he continued to listen to us.

Even in the heat, Xin and his aunt were waiting outside for us by the side of the road. We brought Xin a school bag, stationery, and a birthday cake. Xin made a wish, and we sang Happy Birthday to him. He gave the first slice of cake to his aunt, who was smiling brightly. They were like mother and son.

I followed his aunt out and asked about Xin's family. His parents died from illness when he was 4 and his brother was 12. Since the two boys became orphans, their aunt has been raising them. For 10 years she has been like a mother to them. Eight years ago, her own husband died from cancer, and she was left to raise 3 children on her own. She had to do a lot of field work, but she has been optimistic and positive. It is normal to see sad faces when visiting many poverty-stricken families, but she kept smiling to face all the difficulties. She set a very good example for the children.

According to the aunt, Xin is a well-behaved child. He helps her do field work and housework. His brother is 21 and opened a car wash shop. He has been doing well and has a girlfriend, which makes the aunt happy.

As we were leaving, we asked Xin if his aunt was good to him. He nodded his head firmly. We asked him to treat his aunt well in the future. He answered, “Sure.” We were touched by his answer. It was the child’s serious commitment, which would be the best return for his aunt’s hard work.

On the way back, my heart could not calm down. When we complain about the unfairness of life, we should think of children and other people who are living in difficulties.

Henan Volunteers: Visiting Brother Niu

On May 8th, 2016, we arrived at Brother Niu’s home, to visit and help him out.

Brother Niu (Full Name: Niu Guo Chang) had his legs amputated 30 years ago because his family did not have the money to receive other treatment options for his disease. He’s been using his two hands to drag himself around. When he heard we were visiting, he was so happy that he walked down the slope he lives on. Actually, it wasn’t walking; he was crawling and dragging himself. We saw that he only had rubber from tire tubes to protect what remains of his legs. Because there isn’t any air circulation using rubber, his legs get infected and leak pus. After struggling so hard to sit up inside his house, he started crying and describing his hardships. He showed us his hands.

We all stiffened when we saw his hands. What had happened to his hands? His hands weren’t complete, full-grown hands and were varying in length. His fingers were severely damaged from abrasion. It was a sight that broke our hearts. We heard that he had even contemplated suicide because he didn’t see any hope left. He really needs care from others.

May 9 was Chinese traditional festival—Dragon Boat Festival. Volunteers went to nursing home and Chinese opera actors were invited to give performance for the senior citizens. The senior citizens were sitting under the shadow of the tree when we arrived at the place. They were smiling.

The nursing home is funded by the government. There’s no problem to eat full and wear warm. What they need is spiritual comfort. The senior citizens like to chat to eliminate their loneliness. I took a nail clipper. I was chatting with them while cutting nails for them. Foyuan took hair cut tools and cut hair for the senior citizens. Xiahe Piaoxiang sang 2 songs and recited a poem for them. The senior citizens smiled with satisfactory. The nursing home was full of warm smiles.

Then the actors and actress began to give performances. We were busy for making dumplings. Some were working with vegetable and some with flour. They were enthusiasm though some of them were not very good at wrapping dumplings.

When the activity was over, some of senior citizens were reluctant to leave. I could feel their loneliness and they hope someone would chat with them. A Chinese opera could remind them a nice recalling and eating a meal together could make them happy for several days. They do not have high demand and a caring activity could bring them happiness and satisfactory.

Henan Volunteers: Cleansing the Soul

12/29/2015

The Beautiful Childhood Activity has reached a successful conclusion. As a new volunteer, I also gained a lot during my time spent eating, sleeping and studying with the children.

  • Through this activity, the children’s closed hearts opened up. We have a group of special kids. Because of certain circumstances, their living environments, materialistic conditions, and spiritual life are not as fulfilling as those of other kids. Children grown up in environments like these are self-abased, fearful, shy, and introverted. They are unsure about their future life and learning and about how to plan their life and face challenges. Through this activity, their souls received a thorough cleaning. Many children showed the world their deepest, most protected secrets and pains and were able to free themselves from resentment for the unfair world. They realized their past mistakes and felt much happier, smiles evident on their faces. Seeing the children’s genuine smiles proves to us as volunteers that our hard work has not been in vain.
