LRS: Jiajia

3/30/2015

Little Red Scarf is in Lanzhou, Gansu and Yunnan province and provides financial support and encouragement to children suffering from congenital heart disease. In addition, they provide families with post-operative care and help the children sustain a healthy lifestyle.

On November 19, 2014, I received a phone call from a colleague on Susan’s phone. She informed me that there is a screening in the local countryside for children with congenital heart disease. She also told me that due to the fact that her family was extremely family busy and missed the opportunity to follow through with the previous operation arrangements. After some time, they did not inform the nonprofit foundation until they actually transported to the hospital due to the complications of the condition. The family doctor requested for us to prepare ninety thousand yuan for the surgery contingencies. This type of money was an astronomical figure for a poor farming family. They were just about ready to give up the treatment when they were presented with the amount of money that had to provide. They lingered in the hospital, waiting for their child to be discharged from surgery. Throughout the waiting room, it was ostentatious that numerous mothers and their work colleagues were breaking down into tears when they recognized the positive outcome for their child’s congenital heart disease screening. The teachers tried to seize their work colleagues’ hands, but it did not help so much in the negative situation. Now that the foundation was finally aware of the child’s situation, I went to the hospital on the afternoon of November 20, 2014. According to the number of beds before me, I was able to tell that there were a lot of cardiac surgeries. I walked down the corridor, only to see numerous Muslim and Dominican women wrapped in cloths, underneath the gloomy light, busy telling their children’s fathers back home the medical formalities. Amidst I spotted Jiajia, a pale and beautiful girl hidden amongst layers of clothes.

Henan Volunteers: TFISH Brought Transformation

3/22/2015

Picture
According to their motto - “Love, truth, and service to community” - Xingyang Volunteer Federation works to enhance people’s sense of social responsibility through providing them various volunteer opportunities. The office is in Xingyang, Henan province.

Since our partnership with TFISH in 2012, transparency has become a core value of Xingyang Volunteer Federation. In 3 years of cooperation, we learned about what it takes to operate a small organization and attract more funding. TFISH's capacity building program for grass root organizations has helped us achieve a new level of professionalism.

I still remember writing my first program evaluation report. TFISH staff
Wang Jun provided us with a guide on how to write a clear and standard tracking report with photos and activities. With the support from TFISH, we printed 2 sessions of newsletters. We gained a lot of visibility and it became easier for us to gain credibility from the public.

This year, TFISH launched Project Figure Board to create accurate presentations, which has been a challenge for us volunteers. Xiao An is actively working with TFISH's financial software. Producing income statements, expenditure statements, and information records has been a challenge, but will eventually work in our favor.

Last fall we provided free hair cuts to people in our community. We had a range of people stop by. Some were retired, some disabled. Everyone stood in a line waiting for their haircut. Our hairdressers took particular care of disabled and elderly. The atmosphere was great. People had great conversations and the hair dressers received praises from the residents. Several deaf and mute persons gave them thumb up. They did not take a rest before the end of the activity.

Picture
Hemophilia Home is a nonprofit established to improve the quality of life for patients with hemophilia by collecting knowledge on hemophilia and assisting poor patients. Hemophilia Home is in Beijing, China.

Established in 2010 Hemophilia Home aims to advocate for treatment, education and social inclusiveness of people with hemophilia. Our goal is to promote the development of hemophilia care and improved the living conditions of hemophilia patients in China. Funding our operations has been our primary struggle as an NGO. Luckily, our partnership with TFISH in 2011 supported us during our time in need.

Over the years, TFISH has given us more than financial support. It brought us new ideas for our organization’s operations. Mr and Mrs Chao visited us and gave us much help and suggestions which moved us greatly. We were very moved by the interest and support they had for our mission and we were inspired to better serve hemophilia patients. We hope to continue our close cooperation with TFish!

Longwan Caring Home: My Teaching Story

3/22/2015

Longwan Caring Home is located in Dahua County, which was listed as one of the poorest counties in Guangxi Province. Longwan Caring Home is a big family consisting of orphans, single parents, and abandoned children. The normal expense of the Home is sustained by plantation, breeding, and small business.

The Yaos have lived in mountainous areas for generations and often lack access to adequate health and education. Lan Xiuju for example witnessed her grandparents, mother and younger sister died within a month. In their village of 130 people, half of them are children. Parents do not have the income to provide for their children. An estimated 30% of villagers sell their blood to earn money, 30% of them work in the cities and 40% of the villagers grow corn.

As founder of Longwan Caring Home, I was raised in such an environment and know the importance of the education for the future of the Yao people.

Senior Center: Family Day

3/22/2015

Picture
Grounded on core values of respect, love, and service to the elderly, the Xin Yue Senior Citizen Service Center of Chongqing, China, promotes social work services for senior citizens and builds harmonious living environment for them.

New year festivities are still happening at Xin Yuen Senior Citizen Service Center. At 9:40 in the morning, we had our first activity, taking family photos. This was a direct request by many of the elderly and we decided taking new photos would be a great way to start off the new year. During the activity, over 40 senior citizens took family photos. They smiled more bright than before. Some of senior citizens who suffer from severe Alzheimer’s Disease still remember their address and the names of family members.

To let more senior citizens participate in the activity, we arranged two places for them to take photo. We also had home service for those who are unable to move. Seniors spent all morning getting dressed and camera ready. In the end, many of our seniors just want to spend more time with their loved ones. This was a family filled day and it was wonderful seeing everyone come together and spend quality time together.

Nayong: Report on Goods Distribution in Fall of 2014

3/18/2015

Compassion Nayong Public Welfare is based on Nayong, a poverty-stricken area in Guizhou Province. Taking the network as the platform, it carries out various public welfare activities to aid education.

This month we went to an orphanage to provide kids living there with love and support.  We arranged tracks with rice and vegetable oil. I got up early and rode a motorbike to the villages. The goods were divided to 3 villages, Zaile, Huazhuo and Dongdi.

I received thank-you letters from the students during the process of goods distribution. I was moved and felt our efforts had been rewarded. As a child wrote in thank-you letter: you are the sun and I am the grass covered by you sunshine.

LRS Care: Story of Qiqi

3/18/2015

PictureQiqi and her parents
Little Red Scarf is in Lanzhou, Gansu and Yunnan province and provides financial support and encouragement to children suffering from congenital heart disease. In addition, they provide families with post-operative care and help the children sustain a healthy lifestyle.

Last October I helped 3 year old Qiqi check out of the hospital with her young parents. Her surgery was just completed and had gone successfully.

When she was about 1 year old, Qiqi was diagnosed patent ductus arteriosus. She caught colds easily, but luckily had no major diseases. At the time, they had 6 people in the family. The whole family depends on 4 mu of fields which grew with potatoes and oil seed rape. The family also raise several pigs and dozens of chicken. In the early of 2014, her grandfather was diagnosed bladder cancer and spent about 40,000RMB for medical treatment. The treatment has been going on till now. Qiqi’s grandmother is also in poor health. The whole family was thrown in difficulties and owed 30,000RMB of debts.

Thank you!
PicturePicture was taken in the operation room.
It’s a big problem for the young couple to face. Luckily, Little Red Scarf helped them in some way. On October 13, 2014, the operation completed. When I saw Qiqi again, she was awake from anesthesia with sweaty head. Her mother was feeding her fried rice.

On October 14, 2014 and it’s the time for Qiqi to leave hospital. When I came to the ward, she was in deep asleep.  I took a family photo before she went for Ultrasound. She had not been fully woken up and was leaning in her mother’s arms. Her father kept saying thanks which is the way he expressed their gratitude to sponsors.

Hope Qiqi recover soon and also give her parents blessings. Hope the help of LRS will bring them hope to face the difficulties.

Jinshui Service Center: Oral Health

3/16/2015

Jinshui Social Service Center is located in Zhengzhou City of Henan Province. Since its establishment, it serves for needy persons, families, groups and organizations with professional knowledge and skills. The organization has 10 full-time staff.

This past fall, we organized Oral Hygiene Day for Tuofu Experimental Primary School! Every child received a personal dental exam, lessons on the importance of proper care, and free toothbrush and toothpastes to take home. More importantly, we provided free dental fillings for 200 kids!

During the activity, 7 health workers from Zhimei Oral Health provided free dental examinations and were given important do's and don’ts for protecting teeth. Kids were very excited about their new toothbrushes and held on to their dental kits tightly.

Many of these kids come from poor migrant families and do not regularly brush their teeth. Just a simple intervention like today can make a real difference!
