Last fall we provided free hair cuts to people in our community. We had a range of people stop by. Some were retired, some disabled. Everyone stood in a line waiting for their haircut. Our hairdressers took particular care of disabled and elderly. The atmosphere was great. People had great conversations and the hair dressers received praises from the residents. Several deaf and mute persons gave them thumb up. They did not take a rest before the end of the activity.

Jinshui Service Center: Oral Health

3/16/2015

Jinshui Social Service Center is located in Zhengzhou City of Henan Province. Since its establishment, it serves for needy persons, families, groups and organizations with professional knowledge and skills. The organization has 10 full-time staff.

This past fall, we organized Oral Hygiene Day for Tuofu Experimental Primary School! Every child received a personal dental exam, lessons on the importance of proper care, and free toothbrush and toothpastes to take home. More importantly, we provided free dental fillings for 200 kids!

During the activity, 7 health workers from Zhimei Oral Health provided free dental examinations and were given important do's and don’ts for protecting teeth. Kids were very excited about their new toothbrushes and held on to their dental kits tightly.

Many of these kids come from poor migrant families and do not regularly brush their teeth. Just a simple intervention like today can make a real difference!

Jinshui Service Center: Visit Museum

3/10/2015

Jinshui Social Service Center is located in Zhengzhou City of Henan Province. Since its establishment, it serves for needy persons, families, groups and organizations with professional knowledge and skills. The organization has 10 full-time staff.

Love People Social Worker Center organized a visit Henan Museum by cooperating with Traveling Family Club! Social workers of Loving People led 25 families through the tour.

During the visit, some parents acted as guides and explain the exhibitions to the other people. The younger children showed particular interest in antiques. When the tour guide asked what the main building of the museum looks like, some children said it was like a pyramid, some said like a cave and some said like a tripod. It was a wonderful bonding experience for the parents and children and many expressed interest in participating in such activities in the future.

For many of these low-income families, family outings are rare and far between. Parents are so preoccupied with work and their state of finances. This free activity offered a chance for everyone to take a break and enjoy each other's company.

Mid-Autumn Festival is a family re-union time in China. To let the residents enjoy the festival, Social Work Service Center held activity on September 4 with local street committee.

At the beginning of the activity, we prepared a PPT which reviewed the times we spent together with the residents. They smiled to see themselves or their friends were in the video later we played fingers exercises for the residents. They watched and then followed to do earnestly. They enjoyed the exercises very much. They were a little bit tired after doing the exercises twice. We also prepared moon-cakes and some snacks for them. We played a movie for them. During movie playing, a resident asked to join Wechat of the Center. Other residents joined the Wechat, too.

When the movie finished, the social workers reviewed the PPT with them again. The residents were reluctant to leave the activity room. It’s a successful activity which impressed the residents a lot.

This past month, we partnered with Zhengzhou People's Hospital and delivered a public health campaign to increase education about high blood pressure for elderly people. In many more remote towns, people at high risk of disease have little access to information on treatment and prevention.

Before the lecture, we had our health practitioners measure everyone's blood pressure, so they have a better understanding of how the information will relate in their individual situation. We distributed informational pamphlets and other reading material and had several experts explained the causes of blood pressure and the effect it has on our health. We ended the class with an informative Q&A since many people in the audience asked questions, particularly on their current health. Our lecturers provided some suggestions for treatment and lifestyle changes. In general, proper diet, balanced nutrition, moderate exercise and minimal use of cigarettes and alcohol are all key factors in maintaining a healthy heart.

It's flu season! In order to increase pubic awareness on flu prevention, social workers of Jinshui Social Service Center participated in experiential activity held by the hospital.

We had employees and members of the public gather on the first floor and explain procedure of processing patients. There is a new online registration system that the hospital is trying to implement and this was a great opportunity to provide training on some of the ins and outs of the new processes.

Then, we had medical experts introduce information on prevention and treatment of common infectious diseases.  The presentation allowed
people who are not health care practitioners to take a more proactive approach to handling their health care.

Cao Zhengtao's mother has a hearing disability and suffers from mental illness. He is deaf and mute, along with his wife, brother, sister in law.   His mother has been paralyzed for 4 years. His brother accepted surgery due to lymph cancer last year.  Cao Zheng also has to take care of three children.

Neighbors and strangers have helped support them in times of need, but Cao Zhengtao is struggling to stay afloat. While we provided financial support for Cao Zhengtao's family, we wanted to give them access to more sustainable funds. We invited a news reporter to raise awareness for their family. Hopefully, more donations and nonprofits can come in and help out the Cao family.

With the development of the story, the audience were bursting into laughter and applause. An audience even acted as a commentator. He imitation made everyone happy. Some audience said they felt lonely to watch TV at home. The organization provided a good opportunity for them to share happiness together.
