Du’an Loving Public Welfare Association's work involves education support, poverty alleviation, environmental protection, and left-behind children.
This winter seems much colder. Cold air with raindrops hit the skin as sharply as needles. Thinking of the children living among the mountains, volunteers from our association gathered on the weekends and sent goods donated from around the country to the children. Original article written by Ming Wei, translated by Maggie Li, editted by Yanyan Zhang Jiayan has operated 3 online shops from home Xi'an Alliance works to promote a spirit of volunteerism. Many student volunteers are trained to participate in public welfare activities and social work. Wind was blowing hard that cold winter morning, but our hearts were warmed by the power of love. On the morning of December 26, 2012, with rice, flour, oil, and fruits in hand, nine-member volunteer group from Xi’an Public Welfare Alliance went to visit Jiayan, an inspirational disabled man. He lived in an old building. When the door opened, Jiayan and his father were waiting for us. After we introduced ourselves to them, we listened to their stories, which moved us tremendously. Guizhou Dandelion Volunteer Teaching Center aims to set up an improved and more professional platform for public welfare, attracting more resources to poverty-stricken areas, improving education, and taking care of more children from rural areas.
With a simple dream, I came to Dagai primary school in September of 2012. The school had only three grades with two teachers and another volunteer teacher. I received warm welcome from the students, who greeted me with an enthusiastic “Hello teacher!" As a teacher, I needed to visit the students and get to know more about their families and villages so that I would be able to teach them in accordance with their aptitude. The village we planned on visiting was Rongna, which was said to be far away and without road. There was only a small path with pebbles and weeds. The path stretched around a big mountain and it would take at least two hours to walk it. Little Red Scarf provides financial support and encouragement to children suffering from congenital heart disease. In addition, they provide the family with post-operative care and help the children sustain a healthy lifestyle.
There were 16 children discharged from our hospital in October, 2011. We recently conducted a telephone interview with each of the families. We wanted to know how they were doing after a year. Although we could not reach some of them, we managed to speak with most of the children and their families. The Jingjieniao Sunshine Home provides services for the mentally handicapped from poverty-stricken families. The organization is dedicated to improving their spirit and living standards and advocating for every disabled individual to have adequate access to social resources.
We are dreamers and we are learning to decorate our home little by little. We hope you can also come and experience the joy exchanged by the children here. We hope you come and enjoy their achievements. We hope you come and share your dreams and feelings, and be our new friends. A mother of a mentally disabled child said that her biggest hope is to live one day longer than her child, and to call for equal rights for disabled children. At Jing Jie Niao Home, we converge ideas, money, time, wits, and talent, forming a big river in the end and letting the dream blossom and bear fruits. We wanted to paint our dreams on the wall of Jing Jie Niao, but we could not afford the expensive paint. Fortunately, Lady Wang, a volunteer, donated paint of various different colors to us after hearing our wishes. Volunteers from the Art University then helped us paint our dreams on the wall. Volunteers from Xi’an Children Art Education Base even forgot to eat and rest in order to paint a loving tree. Thank you all. Original article written by Zhaohao Feng, translated by Maggie Li, edited by Yanyan Zhang The Center improves organizing capacity among peasants via three methods: communication and learning-visits; promotion of mutual-help network among the peasants; and small loans. We saw a lot of mountains and terraced fields on the way to Guixi, taking in the views full of typical characteristics. When we came to Defeng’s home, the family gave us warm greetings. We were impressed with the village. There was a public pond in the village and roads were built to each household. They also had a garbage incineration pool, playground, basketball court, and exercise equipments, but most of them have fallen into disuse. Weeds grew around the basketball court and the garbage had not been burnt. There were even some wild fruits like pomelo and bayberry growing. There was also a reservoir with clean water and nice views. Chongqing Xinyue Senior Citizen Service Center was established in October of 2011. Grounded on core values of respect, love, and service, the Center promotes social work services for senior citizens and builds harmonious living environment for them. Aunt Luo’s bright smile caught me the first time I met her. She is a smart woman, running a small grocery store. All her income comes from the shop. She would join us for some volunteer work when she finished her business at the shop. She became known as the respectable “sister Luo” around the community. The elderly in the nursing homes are unfortunate. They lie on their beds all day long, staring up at the ceiling as if they were dead. They have to live alone without children around after a lifetime of hard work. "We are young and healthy. We should keep them company when we have time. I am not rich enough to donate money, but I have time and I will try to do more good deeds,” Aunt Luo told me. We have been advocating for a civil society. We believe that we can build a harmonious and loving society if we can love and care more for the people in need around us. The School provides a relaxing and healthy education environment for the left-behind children living in rural areas.
Though I am in Chengdu, my heart remains in Yaobazhuang—our first public English education site. I got a phone call from the volunteers last night. There are many children who are from primary schools and senior high schools waiting for the enrollment. Already, there are over 80 registered students. I became excited thinking about just how many students would be able to receive education this winter. I thank Mr. Liu from Beijing who donated desks and chairs to the school. Many thanks to TFish Fund, which provided 3000 RMB towards the library construction in the village. The children did not have desks, chairs, or books, but now they have access to all of these crucial items for learning. I also thank all the volunteers who offered English learning materials. These children are unfortunate on the one hand, but they are lucky on the other. Their families are as poor as most other families in this area, but they are lucky because so many loving people care about them. Many people not only provides help to them, but they work to clean obstacles in their way so that they would be able to grow up well. I hope that they will take this as motivation to connect more with the outside world, learn more, expand their vision, and fly out their dreams. Original article written by Fangding Zhang, translated by Maggie Li, edited by Yanyan Zhang Inner Mongolia BOYA Cultural Association is a non-governmental organization working with environmental protection and social public welfare. When you complain about unfair treatment or stress from life and work, have you ever considered that some vulnerable groups do not even have the chance to experience such feelings? They need someone to care for and accompany them in their daily life. They are unable to take care of themselves. Considering this, how can you still think of unfairness? They become a burden on their families due to their disability. They can neither achieve independence in society nor share in their family’s burden. They do feel anxiety, but they can do nothing to help their families. We've now started organizing training for them. Through it, they can not only learn some life skills, but also make new friends. The teens thoroughly enjoy their training. Our classroom is humble. We do not even have a heater, but the teens sat for about 3 hours, eagerly leaning the art of paper-cutting. They would always tell us that they appreciated BOYA’s support, which made them feel respected and cared for. We just respond that we're simply doing what we should be doing. A healthy society should be full of hope and service. The children learned to read price and identify and choose grocery items with the teachers' instructions. They also learned how to carry out simple currency exchange.
When the day was over, the children were content with the practice that they received. Their vision of life was expanded and their life skills improved. You see, they are smiling happily! Original article written by Zhaohao Feng, translated by Maggie Li, edited by Yanyan Zhang |
