In my mind, home should be somewhere comfortable and warm, a shelter from the outside world. But does the structure in this photograph elicit thoughts of home? The computer training classes for students in Chinese migrant schools are underway. After Teddy went to Vietnam to learn how Orphan Impact conducted their successful classes in orphanages there, Tad Kincaid, Orphan Impact director, traveled to Shanghai to train Teddy, Sherry, and volunteers to launch the program in Zhejiang in partnership with Stepping Stones.
We are pleased to announce our new partnership with SEAPC, a Christian global community of friends that believes lives are changed through prayer. SEAPC, a registered 501c3 organization in the USA, partners with New Hope Children’s Homes (NHO) in Cambodia to break the poverty cycle in Cambodia by providing for the orphaned and abandoned children throughout the country. Thousands of children throughout the country are orphaned and abandoned due to residual effects of the Khmer Rouge regime and civil war when all infrastructure within the country was essentially destroyed. These children are at risk of becoming victims of human trafficking, drug use/dealers, various criminal activities, malnutrition, serious health issues and lack of education. As of May 2016, NHO is providing daily care for 377 children within 14 homes in 13 provinces throughout the country. The goal is to have a home in every province of Cambodia, providing for at least 1,000 children at any given time by the end of 2018. This brings a child from a place of hopelessness into a life full of hope and opportunity.
Our support will help build a new orphanage in Cambodia for 39 children. We invite our donors to join us in giving $20,000 toward the $70,000 needed to build the new children's house. Our partnership with One Heart World-Wide is helping women in Bhojpur, Nepal receive skilled birth attendant training. Here's what a couple of the SBAs shared after their training. Compassion Nayong Public Welfare is based on Nayong, a poverty-stricken area in Guizhou Province. Taking the network as the platform, it carries out various public welfare activities to aid education.
Transparent Fish Fund, who has been funding us, found out that there are kids in Nayong who have a difficult life. For instance, the father dies and after the mother remarries, they even lose contact with their mother. Some parents (either one parent or both) have court sentences to serve or remands, so the child cannot receive any care. Some work too hard and get ill (paralysis, physical disabilities, mental illnesses) and lose the ability to take care of their kids. When life gets hard for these kids, society uses its resources to cover basic needs and education. After meeting with Nayong Loving, Transparent Fish Fund decided to donate 1000 Yuan RMB in materials to these struggling kids each year. The materials include rice, cooking oil, various education materials and necessities, medical insurance, and local organic chickens (the children received chicks that could lay eggs to be sold or be sold directly when they grow older, or just be eaten) By visiting homes, we verified that the first cohort would have 68 kids receiving aid. To make it fair, we used a public open bid to find people to help buy materials for the kids. Business men who win the bid will send the materials they buy to the Nayong Loving office. Volunteers will individually pack the materials according to how many kids there are to make distribution quick and error free. Let’s look at what materials the students are receiving! (some of them)
January – April, 2016BackgroundBhojpur is a hill district located in the northeastern part of Nepal. It is home to 172,098 people, and reports 4,474 pregnancies per year. In 2014, One Heart World-Wide started the needs assessment process for this district, but due to the earthquakes that destroyed parts of Nepal in 2015, we had to pause our initial program activities and focus on districts such as Dhading and Sindhupalchok, where over 90% of the health facilities sustained either full or partial damage.
In late 2015, we started up our program activities in Bhojpur again, and in 2016, we have started rolling out the second phase of our Network of Safety – Program Implementation. Over the next three years, we will train community outreach providers, implement a community outreach program, upgrade health facilities into birthing centers, and train Skilled Birth Attendants. We will also develop a basic health infrastructure, provide health education, and foster community empowerment in collaboration with the local District Health Department. Our goal for the next five years is to double the rate of deliveries with a Skilled Birth Attendant, and reduce the maternal and neonatal mortality by at least 50%. In the spring of 2016, Transparent Fish Fund field visit volunteer John Kieu visited the floating community that lives around Tonle Sap Lake in Cambodia. He reported on the floating toilet project we implemented in partnership with Wetland Works and the World Toilet Organization. Before embarking on the journey to the floating villages, I met face to face with Taber of Wetland Works at his office in Phnom Penh. During the meeting, he gave me an overview of the living conditions and climate of the floating communities around the Tonle Sap Lake. According to Taber, there is a huge shortage of water due to drought as a result of climate change. For the past 3 years, rain has been scarce in the region. Because of this, water levels on the lake and connecting rivers have dropped considerably, causing some houses that were floating to now being situated on land. Another effect of drought is the reduction of fish population in the lake. So because of these factors, living conditions on the lake are quite dire.

On May 8th, 2016, we arrived at Brother Niu’s home, to visit and help him out. Brother Niu (Full Name: Niu Guo Chang) had his legs amputated 30 years ago because his family did not have the money to receive other treatment options for his disease. He’s been using his two hands to drag himself around. When he heard we were visiting, he was so happy that he walked down the slope he lives on. Actually, it wasn’t walking; he was crawling and dragging himself. We saw that he only had rubber from tire tubes to protect what remains of his legs. Because there isn’t any air circulation using rubber, his legs get infected and leak pus. After struggling so hard to sit up inside his house, he started crying and describing his hardships. He showed us his hands. We all stiffened when we saw his hands. What had happened to his hands? His hands weren’t complete, full-grown hands and were varying in length. His fingers were severely damaged from abrasion. It was a sight that broke our hearts. We heard that he had even contemplated suicide because he didn’t see any hope left. He really needs care from others. May 9 was Chinese traditional festival—Dragon Boat Festival. Volunteers went to nursing home and Chinese opera actors were invited to give performance for the senior citizens. The senior citizens were sitting under the shadow of the tree when we arrived at the place. They were smiling. The nursing home is funded by the government. There’s no problem to eat full and wear warm. What they need is spiritual comfort. The senior citizens like to chat to eliminate their loneliness. I took a nail clipper. I was chatting with them while cutting nails for them. Foyuan took hair cut tools and cut hair for the senior citizens. Xiahe Piaoxiang sang 2 songs and recited a poem for them. The senior citizens smiled with satisfactory. The nursing home was full of warm smiles. Then the actors and actress began to give performances. We were busy for making dumplings. Some were working with vegetable and some with flour. They were enthusiasm though some of them were not very good at wrapping dumplings. When the activity was over, some of senior citizens were reluctant to leave. I could feel their loneliness and they hope someone would chat with them. A Chinese opera could remind them a nice recalling and eating a meal together could make them happy for several days. They do not have high demand and a caring activity could bring them happiness and satisfactory. Original article written by Ka Fei , translated by Maggie Li, edited by Yanyan Zhang |
