In 3 years of cooperation, we learned about what it takes to operate a small organization and attract more funding. TFISH's capacity building program for grass root organizations has helped us achieve a new level of professionalism. I still remember writing my first program evaluation report. TFISH staff Wang Jun provided us with a guide on how to write a clear and standard tracking report with photos and activities. With the support from TFISH, we printed 2 sessions of newsletters. We gained a lot of visibility and it became easier for us to gain credibility from the public. This year, TFISH launched Project Figure Board to create accurate presentations, which has been a challenge for us volunteers. Xiao An is actively working with TFISH's financial software. Producing income statements, expenditure statements, and information records has been a challenge, but will eventually work in our favor.

Last summer, a fellow staff member, “High mountain sky blue creek”, became seriously injured in a car accident and stayed in the intensive care unit for 5 days. Brother Mountain joined our Volunteer Federation for nearly 5 years. He often participated in various volunteer activities and we become quite well acquainted over time. In my mind, he is like a big brother to us … in various activities, he is our think tank, a hard working partner; When there is disagreement or argument, he is always the impartial mediator, always shows his clear, calm mind. Therefore, everyone knows we have a dear brother called brother “High mountain sky blue creek”, or “Brother Mountain” in short. After the incident, I went to visit Brother Mountain, that is his 4th day in the intensive care unit. My voice was choked up when I saw him lying in bed with so many bandages, tubes, and monitoring equipment over his body. It is not easy for anyone to see such an energetic person turned into this in just a few days. I quickly adjusted my voice to keep spirits high. My tears started to come out again when brother Mountain said this in weak voice : “I was unable to do the haircut”. You see, a week ago, the Volunteer Federation issued a message that they are looking for volunteers to help hair cut for elderlies in the nursing home on June 12th. Brother Mountain signed up for this event and then missed it because of his accident. I held back my tears and said with smile : “Brother Mountain, I know you’re unable to go. We all did it on your behalf. Please take easy and take care”. Even when he was at his most vulnerable, he was thinking for others. Last time, we introduced you to Tian Jinguo is a 66-year-old man, blind in one eye and living off the land for most of his life. He lives in a very remote place and he has trouble accessing water, even counting on snow and rain to fill his well. We decided to help. On June 10, 500 meters of pipes were donated and transported to the village. We surveyed the route for the pipes—350 meters of pipes were needed. Manual excavation could be lasted for over 40 days, so we decided to rent an excavator. A director of the local government knew this and he suggested the local government would rent the excavator. This summer, we had our volunteers visit poverty-stricken areas in rural China. We hope to provide them with kindness and access to support if needed. Tian Jinguo is a 66-year-old man who lives Cassia village. He has been blind in one eye since he was a child so it has been difficult finding work. He has some arable land to farm that was left to him by his parents and receives subsidies of 100 yuan a month (roughly USD $12) from the government. He doesn't have much family today. He has an 85-year-old brother who lives in nursing home and a 64-year-old brother in a another village. His only nephew died of illness. The old man lives in a very remote place and he has trouble getting access to water. He collects water from the snow or walks miles to a neighboring village if necessary. Tian Jinguo has enough to survive, but his life is full of hardships. We hope that we can help Tian Jinguo feel more connected to the community and support him at this old age. May was a busy time here at Xingyang Volunteer Federation. Over the course of the month, we logged a total of 249 hours with 106 volunteers participating. The weather was scorching hot but our spirits were high and were able to achieve a lot in a few weeks. The third Sunday of May is National Disabled Day and we had our volunteers visit several people in need.We had three of our volunteers bring $2400 in donations from our supporters at Transparent Fish Fund to two patients Mou-Fen Wang and Mou-Li Wang with serious mental illness. They also visited poor households in Huai Lin village, and brought gifts, wheelchairs and other supplies to those in hardship. We sat and talked and laughed and tried to help them out with any problems they have in their life. Many disabled people live in isolation and we believe providing a community of support is as important as supplies and medicine. On May 18th, 2014 was the 24th Help-the-Disabled Day here in China. We provided wheelchairs, funds, rice, cooking oil, etc. to the elderly with disabilities and orphans. Volunteers gathered at the playground at 8:00pm and were divided into 3 groups. The first group went to visit Wu Yanpeng. They brought a pail of cooking oil (5L) and a bag of rice (5kg). Wu Yanpeng was excited to see the volunteers. He is a young man with cerebral palsy. His room is neat and clean and he has learned to use the computer. He very optimistic despite the daily challenges he has to face. Below is a picture of him waving goodbye to the volunteers. At about 13:00 on January, 10th, 14 volunteers from Xingyang Volunteer Federation went to a nursing home. They were going to cut hair for the elderly people. In the long corridor, we placed several chairs. While we organized the equipment, connections and wires, several old people were waiting. We helped them to sit down and began to cut their hair carefully. For those who were not able to move freely, our volunteers would hold them or bring them wheelchairs. As we cut the hair, other volunteers were cleaning the hair on the floor. The hairdressers were stylish and pretty, but they worked hard. Each of them cut hair for about 20 elderly persons. When they saw the elderly people and their long nails, they also took out their cutters and cut their nails for them. The senior citizens were very happy. It was almost as though the hairdressers were pious sons and daughters who were cutting their mother's and father's hair. The hairdressers served each person carefully and patiently. At the end of the day, we had cut the hair of over 100 elderly people. Seeing their kind smiles, we did not regret our errand. When I carried a 86-year-old grandfather to his room, the grandfather asked me if we would come and cut hair for them again. I told him we would come again. We were only able to provide a bit of help and there is much more that needs to be done. We hope more volunteers will join us and help more needy people. The 2013 Chongyang Festival was a memorable day in my life. It moved me a lot. I visited the Qiaolou Old-Age Home with volunteers of the Xingyang Volunteer Federation. Upon coming into the yard, I could not help but burst into tears. I had never expected to see people living in such a way. An old man told me no one had visited him before. I asked him if he was happy there. He said yes but he wished there were more people to chat with him. It reminded me of my parents who said the same thing. They told me that because they are getting old and I won’t have time to take care of them, I might have to send them to an old-age home so that they can play with other old people. I agreed happily, thinking some other people could keep them company and they would be happy. When I heard the old man’s words, I said to myself that I would never send them to an old-age home. I decided to live with them and take care of them no matter how busy I will be. Although the staff is warm-hearted, I still feel the loneliness of the old people who live away from their children. I don’t want my parents to be alone. The old people are just like children. They long for care and company from their children. Seeing the volunteers bring them happiness by talking with them made me wish I could be their child. If there are more volunteers who can be with them and chat with them every day, there will be less loneliness. I don’t think any of the old people would like to leave their children and live in the nursing home. People might become more open and clear when they are getting old. Our grandparents’ generation did not have opportunities to enjoy a comfortable life, but they are still thankful. We will become old one day, so we should be kind to old people. When I visited the old-age home, I found their needs are so simple. They just need someone to talk with them. To be a volunteer makes me understand and learn a lot in life.
