The HeYue Free Library provides children with free books and information, while promoting values of equality, respect, and participation. This article is a brief introduction to the new NGO, with snapshots of their accomplishments in their first few months of existence.
The NGO HeYue not only builds and supports rural school libraries, but they also establish small libraries in city communities. They hope to raise resources from all aspects of the society, while expending a small cost, and let the community residents operate autonomously. Beginning in February 2012, they opened their first free community library on Beijing XuanWu East Street 20-3A. It consisted of 2000 books, all of which, in addition to the bookshelves, were sponsored by various enterprises. Financial information can be found on the HeYue free library blog.
On the library’s opening day, five children borrowed twenty books. Some of the fourth graders turned to their grandmother and said, “This is my happiest day.”
