Guan Yuan is 11 years old and in Grade 5. It’s his 3rd year in Longwan. He is a happy, honest and responsible little man in our Home. He is growing up day by day. His previous home was a cottage with a thatched roof. His family consists of orphans from 2 families. This is because his father died when he was still young and his mother married again and left the home. Guan Yuan and his younger brother now live and study at Longwan, which has become their new home. Guan Yuan likes to play basketball and he is definitely the main force on the basketball team at the Home. He also likes taking photographs and is very good at it. He helps to fix lights, pipes, tables and chairs and is becoming a skilled worker. He also helps cook in the kitchen for about 70-80 people, along with many of the other children. Guan Yuan is a warm-hearted child and helps to do a lot of chores such as cleaning, feeding pigs, taking care of younger children, etc. He is a good student. Guan Yuan hopes to become a photographer or basketball star. We hope he studies hard and changes his fate with hard work. Longwan Caring Home is a big family consisting of orphans, single parents, and abandoned children. The normal expense of the Home is sustained by plantation, breeding, and small business. On a February afternoon, two students told me that a beggar was sleeping in the old school. The school had been abandoned for some time, and the villagers used it to keep their horses. The beggar became the topic of every talk. These talks were filled with compassion. The following afternoon, the children said that the beggar was passed out on the road, and they wanted to give him food. We went to the cross road and saw the beggar lying on the ground, covered only by a worn-out red quilt. His hair was dirty, and his face was buried in the quilt. He was about 40 or 50 years old, and the dark skin in his forehead seemed striking. He seemed in obnubilation. The children called him grandpa. There were children around him talking. The villagers did not allow him to stay in the old school, and he was driven outside. The children sent him food, clothes, a scarf, and a quilt. He slept under an electric pole once he was driven out, forced to face the cold. Longwan Caring Home is located in Dahua County, which was listed as one of the poorest counties in Guangxi Province.
