The day that the Volunteers Associated planned to visit Ju Yan, it was raining and cold. It took time to walk to the village where Ju Yan lives. We met her at the entrance of the village. She was very thin, but she gave us warm greetings. Her grandparents died early and her mother left the family. Her father works in the city and can only come home once a year. Ju Yan has to take care of herself and the empty house. She had to cook, wash and go to school by herself. Everything has to be done by her. She is 8, but she has become much more mature than her contemporaries. The only electrical equipment in the house are an electric cooker and a 10-inch TV, which was damaged long ago. She hopes to one day have a new TV that she can see people on. We had been planning to visit Ya’an since the earthquake. We thought that Children’s Day was a great opportunity to visit. So we visited Shifeng village of Ya’an city, bringing gifts to the children. We had to spend 16 hours on the train, but it was not that bad. Then we walked through the streets of Chengdu carrying gifts. It took 2 hours to get to Ya’an from Chengdu and another 1.5 hours to get to Shifeng village. Facing collapsed houses, we felt sorry for the local residents. With the help of the villagers, we found Zhen Ni, our co-worker. She had been stayed in Shifeng village with volunteers for about half a month. The children were happy to see us and we helped to prepare for an activity. The children were looking forward to the start of the activity. I definitely believe we brought happiness to the children. When I reviewed the photos, I saw the pain in their eyes, which made it difficult to control my emotions. For the first time, I found myself so little and so helpless. On April 18, 2013, volunteers from the Jiangjin Sunshine Social Service Center visited a Jiangjin district nursing home. They gave digital audio-on-demand systems to the old people living in the nursing home as a gift. 350 pieces of audio-on-demand systems were delivered to 3 nursing homes. The system acts like a radio. The senior citizens can use it to listen to about 500 songs, including Sichuan opera, Huangmei opera and other classic songs. The senior citizens were very pleased to receive these systems. They opened the package cautiously and listened to the volunteers’ explanation of how to use it. The volunteers explained the operation of the system patiently. Soon the sound of music and laughter could be heard from the nursing home. You can imagine how happy a scene it was. On May 31, 2013, staff from Rainbow Village visited Qinchong Primary School of Guangxi Province, taking gifts like stationary and sporting goods with them. They spent a happy Children’s Day with the children. Many interesting games inspired the children and most of them participated in the games actively. The paper airplane contest attracted hundreds of children. Competitors had to fold their own airplane and fly it to a specified zone. It seemed simple, but it was also a challenge. Many children tried their best to adjust the shape of their plane and find the best way to fly it. Each one of them tried hard again and again to show their skills. They were earnest and persistent, which moved our staff greatly. The campus was full of happiness and cheers. Rainbow Village also brought festive gifts to the children in the Yulin Dandelion Home of Guangxi, spending a happy Children’s Day with them. We hope their happiness can go on and accompany them as they grow up.
