Xi’an Heart to Heart Community Service Center aims to help children of migrant families integrate into the community and life of the city.
We had been planning to visit Ya’an since the earthquake. We thought that Children’s Day was a great opportunity to visit. So we visited Shifeng village of Ya’an city, bringing gifts to the children.
We had to spend 16 hours on the train, but it was not that bad. Then we walked through the streets of Chengdu carrying gifts.
It took 2 hours to get to Ya’an from Chengdu and another 1.5 hours to get to Shifeng village. Facing collapsed houses, we felt sorry for the local residents.
With the help of the villagers, we found Zhen Ni, our co-worker. She had been stayed in Shifeng village with volunteers for about half a month. The children were happy to see us and we helped to prepare for an activity. The children were looking forward to the start of the activity.
I definitely believe we brought happiness to the children. When I reviewed the photos, I saw the pain in their eyes, which made it difficult to control my emotions. For the first time, I found myself so little and so helpless.
