Teaching Diary It was raining last night, and when I woke up I saw kids already sweeping water on the playground and aisles. After eating breakfast and taking a group photo, the children of Jia Yuan quickly and neatly cleaned the school/home in order to welcome the visitors. The days in Jia Yuan seemed to repeat. Meng Meng and Shan Shan would definitely cry; the older boys would playfully be loquacious; the kids would quarrel and fight, but would reconcile at the end of the day. However, every day is a new day. Each of the kids has lots of talents and virtues waiting to be explored, but tomorrow we will have to say goodbye. Our partners donated about 100 picture books to Longwan. We are lucky to have a shelf with 100 books for our children! Each night, we have a story reading time for our children. Tonight we are going to read "No, David!" The story is about a mother and her son David. The children like the story very much. They like to draw on the wall as much as David did. One of the charming aspects of picture books is their capacity to transform. During the reading, we were often interrupted by the children’s applause and cheers. The story means more though with the participation. We try to bring in some creative dialogue instead of only reading stories. People ask us why we established Longwan Kindergarten. We wanted to give preschool children from remote areas an environment that they can learn and grow up in. We believe we will continue to improve in our professionalism and standards. The children need not only to play, but also to learn. We integrated both games and education in a day’s activities. Zhen Ron’s grandfather and father died in 2012. His mother left home and has not come back. Zhen Ron had been living with his uncle. Unfortunately, his uncle’s wife left the family, so life became difficult for them.
In 2014, Zhen Ron’s uncle brought him to Longwan. The children who came around the same time as Zhen Ron were studying in the senior class, but Zhen Ron wanted to stay in the junior class. The teachers joked with him saying, “You should go to the senior class.” But he would respond, “I do not want to.” Zhen Ron did not like speaking, but now he has become open and lively. He has learned to care for the younger children. He can wash himself clean before going to bed. Zhen Ron also likes toy cars and balls. When he's not happy, he closes his lips tightly. But the children who are older than him treat him patiently and comfort him if he is unhappy. Zhen Ron’s uncle is trying his best to earn a living, especially since Zhen Ron’s father left debt when he died. His uncle takes Zhen Ron home during the winter and summer holidays. Zhen Ron always greets his uncle with the brightest smiles. He weeps sadly when he has to leave his uncle. We are with Zhen Ron together to witness his growing-up. Fragrant Chinese tamales (zongzi) means a fragrant kitchen. Fragrant aiye leaves means a fragrant whole house. 200 TamalesWhen it comes to talking about the Dragon Boat Festival, most children most deeply remember eating Chinese tamales. For children, wrapping Chinese tamales is a tradition that also unites the family. At the Longwan Home, we made about 200 Chinese tamales this year. Wrapping took an entire afternoon, and cooking took all night. A few of the older male students took turns watching the stove, adding wood or kindling the fire when necessary. A big thank you to the kids and also to the aunties and grandmas for helping with cooking! The PreparationFirst we cleaned the leaves used to wrap the Chinese tamales. Then we rinsed them once more with warm water. We prepared 70 kg of rice and the rest of the ingredients: glutinous rice, green beans, peanuts, pork belly. The glutinous rice was soaked and then drained.

We have been carrying out reading activity long ago. Picture books have been included in daily curriculum of preschool. The children could also read books during daytime. Apart from half hour reading time before bed time, we arranged video time on each Friday and morning outside reading on Saturday. We also have themed performance and night of village stories. We want to enrich the extra-curriculum time of the children living in Longwan. Bedtime story became routine. We use half hour to read picture books to the children which would brought them to a sweet dream. Our children live in Longwan 24 hours a day, which is a good opportunity for us to carry out night of village stories. The children in primary school also love picture books. Some elder children learned to read stories to the younger ones. Lan Yunfeng and Lu Sansan are the youngest children in Longwan. They had been attracted deeply by the pictures of the book. Teacher Peach had been trained to read books. Teach Peach could also read stories vividly. The children love her. Teacher Peach shared stories in pictures books with the teachers from other kindergartens. She suggested they could use the stories to the daily life of the children. The teacher of Longwan repeated the same things day by day. Now the children could plan and organize their own performances. Going into June, the South is already getting very hot. In June, the South also happens to have lots of rain and floods. Dahua County experienced the worst rainstorm in a hundred years while the Longwan Loving Home was hit by disease. Both children and adults could not resist the germs that took over their bodies. Even though we encountered unforeseeable difficulties, our hearts are still together, and Home still received support and help. In June, we attended the parent meetings for Home’s first to sixth graders enrolled in Longma Elementary School. These are the Home’s sixth graders. On July 2nd, they will be taking the Sixth Grade Exit Exam. We hope they will do well! The 2015 (fourth annual) “Outdoor Cleaning Day” is a large-scale outdoor nonprofit environmental protection event that will start simultaneously in forty-six prefectures located in sixteen provinces, cities, and territories. Our Longwan Loving Home has participated in “Outdoor Cleaning Day” for three years in a row. From cleaning our small home, we then swept every little road in our village. During each year’s event, the children were always excited and worked hard with their cleaning tools. The goal of the Outdoor Cleaning Day is to call every to pick up their “lost civilization” and remind people about having a green, environmentally friendly mindset and a healthy lifestyle through having volunteers clean the public spaces, a simple, easy to complete environmental protection activity. Through the event, more citizens will understand and care about the environment and protect it together with the ultimate goal of reaching a state of harmonious coexistence between man and nature. Let’s first talk about the children. I teach preschool. At first, I felt slightly frustrated because, whether I coo or punish, the kids would not sit quietly. They climb on stools and desks, run around inside and outside of the classroom, and create a huge disturbance. After spending more days with them, however, I got used to this behavior. The children are very creative: making beautiful works out of paint, clay, and paper. Some boys have no hesitation swinging their fists at other children, and when I turn my head to check on them a few minutes later, they are already on top of the basketball net. When I look at their drawings, however, I see cute animals and bright colors. Discoveries like these always surprise me and make me stare in awe. I silently pray that, in their growing up, they will never lose this ability to express their true feelings because if they do, the grown-up world will be extremely boring. There are also many older children (4th to 6th grade) in the Home who are so considerate and obedient that they make our hearts ache. Many of them are orphans or have single parents. I don’t know if I can understand even a fraction of what they have been through. All I can do is try to suppress the hurtful pity in my eyes when I look at them. All I want is to get along well with them. They are very skilled, able to do all kinds of chores, take care of their little sisters and brothers, dance, play music, sign language, and play many different sports. They gave me my first lesson in ballroom dancing. ongwan Caring Home is located in Dahua County, which was listed as one of the poorest counties in Guangxi Province. Luo Shengshi is a naughty boy. He likes hanging around Longwan and touch things. He has 2 elder brothers and 2 younger brothers. They live and study in Longwan. Luo Shenghua is Luo Shengshi’s little brother. His nickname is A Fu. He would correct his teacher that his name is Luo Fu instead of Luo Shenghua. He always follow his brothers. Lu Shanshan is the youngest child. She is only 2 and cannot speak. She would cry if she was unhappy. Ban Lina has a princess name, but she behaved as a boy. She is independent and stubborn. By autumn semester of 2015, Longwan has had 137 students. 63 (34 are boys and 29 are girls) of them are in kindergarten. 16 of them are from single parent family and 5 are orphans. Keeping accompany during kindergarten period is important. To promote the base education in rural areas and make up the blank for childhood education, we built Long Wan Kindergarten.
