The Light of Love Public Welfare Development Center is located in Nanjing, China. It is dedicated to the development of rural education and community public welfare. Our nonprofit “Light of Love” first began in 2008 and completed the registration process on June 15th, 2013. It is the first nonprofit in China to focus solely on drug safety, drug development, and health services. We aim to help everyone take better care of their health, minimize cases of drug over-use, and prevent illnesses, and as a result lower governmental expenses for medical services. Our organization began working with Transparent Fish Fund in 2011, when we started a free lunch program for poorer children at an elementary school in Zunyi, Guizhou with the help of TFish. Since 2011, we have grown together with Transparent Fish Fund. Back then, “Light of Love” was still a high school club working with other nonprofits. That experience was our first time working with “Transparent Fish Fund,” a nonprofit that advocates financial transparency. During 2011 and 2012, while we participated in TFish’s financial training program and worked with them, our organization began to organize our own finances and categorize and record our budget and expenditures. During this time when we focused on finances, we found a great mentor and began to use a great method to keep our finances in order. All of this proved to be very important to the development of our organization later on. TFish’s project funding application is very detailed, which taught us to be specific and thorough and gave us more experience with applying for funds to complete projects later on. In 2012, “Light of Love” began planning to become something more than a high school club, and to register as an official nonprofit organization. Mr. Dai Xianwei, who is the person in charge of our organization, asked Mr. Ping Chao for advice regarding launching a nonprofit. At that time, “Light of Love” was experiencing hardships such as being unable to pay our employees. Mr. Chao agreed to cover the administration costs of “Light of Love” and to help Dai Xianwei start his nonprofit. From this point on, the organization began to develop along the right path. In December of the same year, Dai Xianwei again received Transparent Fish Fund’s invitation to attend a financial training session in Beijing. This time, Mr. and Mrs. Chao and Director Nguyen all came to Beijing Normal University to host the training session. Because “Light of Love” had just registered as a nonprofit, Dai Xianwei came to from Nanjing to Beijing with a lot of questions that needed to be answered. Upon meeting Mr. Chao, Xianwei received monetary support for his administration costs. Xianwei also discussed with Director Nancy Nguyen about the future development of our organization. Director Nguyen told Xianwei that since he is now the person in charge of his organization and that since the organization is also now an official nonprofit, he and the organization would need to continue learning new skills and trying to find a method for self-sustaining development. If we can achieve that, our organization will grow stronger. Two years have passed since then, and “Light of Love” continues to mature as an organization. Along the way, our development has been aided by the strict requirements and helpful training of these partner nonprofits. We would like to thank Transparent Fish Fund for supporting “Light of Love”’s initial development and for steering us onto the path of financial transparency, allowing our organization to go further and grow larger. On October 16, 2013, we opened a computer class for senior citizens. The volunteers will provide 40 class hours about computer operation to the senior citizens in the community. The curriculum aims to open a window to the world for the senior citizens. Hopefully it will also inject more fun into their lives. Before class, our teacher gave an introduction about the content and tasks involved in the class. The teachers then communicated with the students, in order to find out how much they know about computers. Some of the students asked for more tasks. The instructor and volunteer teacher were in the front, while the other volunteers assisted with other jobs, mainly helping the senior citizens operate the computers. Whenever anyone needed help, the volunteers would respond immediately. The students were very eager to learn and they took some notes. The volunteers were patient with their help. Time flew by. The senior citizens were too involved with their computers to feel bored. When the end of the period arrived, many students were reluctant to leave. They wanted to do more exercises. The senior citizens learned a lot during the period. They not only learned simple computing, but also typing. On June 23, 2013, we held an activity to visit senior citizens in the community despite the bad weather. Volunteers came to the homes of the senior citizens, bringing gifts. They talked with the old people, getting to know what they need. They talked happily and the senior citizens were grateful for the activity. They like our volunteers. We also gave questionnaires to the senior citizens, hoping to improve our services. The activity was popular and the senior citizens gave us high praise. Zhang Yi, a volunteer from the university, visited Grandpa Zhang who treated her as his granddaughter. The old man shot a video of her and we were moved. An old man even greeted us with some snacks and showed us some pictures from his travels. We hope more old people have good health and we hope that our project can help us maintain a good relationship with them. It is dedicated to the development of rural education and community public welfare. One of the main purposes of several public welfare organizations is to train, promote young volunteers to team up with the elderly to enrich their lives and, in the meantime, to help our young volunteers as well. These elderly people with empty nest quite often need company. Need someone to talk to, share their feelings, and doing something fun together to enjoy their lives. At the same time, our young volunteers can learn from the elderly from their life long experience and seeking for their advice as needed. In the morning of 04/13/2013, several public welfare organizations, including “Young & Old Connection” and “The Light of Love Public Welfare Development Center”, held an event in the city of Nanking to “Embrace the Sunshine of Spring, Stroll Excursion with the Elderly”. This event received broad support from various organizations, college students, union members, etc. Local radio and TV stations and media companies were also invited to report this event. First, the elderly and our volunteers roamed through a beautiful park in the pleasant sunny weather of April. They carried on conversations, laughed a lot while walking in the nature. Later on, they watched talent show by our young volunteers. Some of the elderly also performed their own talent show. The atmosphere really got warmed up and felt like they had known each other for a long time and got more attached. When we looked at the scene, it was like grandparents with their own grandkids having a great time together. What a blessed group of people they are and full of warm feeling. This spring outing activity with the elderly let’s experience the joy of bringing happiness to the elderly, the genuine caring love among us. This allows us to realize the need and essence of public welfare. Together, we should all “Serve the elderly with our heart. Accompany their lives with our love.” Original article written by Xianwei Dai, translated by Joe Hsu and edited by Yanyan Zhang The nonprofit "Light of Love", is a volunteer group established in 2008 by students in China Pharmaceutical University. The group aims to develop health education in rural areas in Western China to teach people to safely use medicine. In March this year, the Light of Love developing center started to implement its one-year free-lunch project for 55 impoverished students in Lutang Primary School, Xinzhou Town, Zhunyi County, Guizhou Province, and has been in a good situation since launch. The total sum of the fund is 40260 RMB, which means an average 4440 for every month from March to June and September to January next year. The principal Dai Xianwei has already sent Oct’s remittance to Lutang School on 9th October. (For the reason that the school left 97 of 4440 unused last month and there is a seven-day holiday in October, so the money financed this time is 3300. ) Even though it is an inadequate amount for such a severe situation, we know it can also encourage those students. That is why we will continue working passionately on it and bringing it to a successful close with a final report recording the whole project. The overall handling fee is 41.5, consisting of 25 for withdrawing cash and 16.5 for remittance. The bills are as follows. Original Article: http://www.toumingyu.org/cpuaizhiguang/story/11982/

Recently, we initiated a program on weibo to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival with Senior Citizens. I am glad that I took part in the program because I ended up having a great time with Grandma Sha and her family members. On mid-autumn’s day, we visited Grandma Sha’s home and brought some fruits and mooncakes. She was very happy to see us and gave us a warm welcome into her home. There were lots of potted flowers all around her house, and Grandma Sha showed us these beautiful creatures and told us many things about them. At about five o’clock, we started to prepare for dinner. With help of another volunteer, we were able to successfully serve a fancy festival dinner. At the beginning of the dinner, we proposed a toast to both the grandma and the grandpa; we wished them a happy festival and good health all year round. Grandma was very happy and kept telling grandpa, “Look, our grand-children made all the dishes for us!” Grandpa is a war veteran--he had a stroke once, so he has trouble with speaking clearly and walking steadily. Nevertheless, we were still glad to see their smiles. It was truly a treasurable time for everyone! After dinner, we cleared away the dishes and had a nice conversation with Grandma until it got late. Grandma and Grandpa were tired and both needed rest, so we said goodbye to them and promised that we would visit them later. On the way back home, we talked about family reunion and realized that no matter how far we are from home, our family shall never be forgotten. 19th Sept. 2012, Wednesday, Sunny Location: WangJiashan Interviewees: Zhao Yutian and her family members Visiting teacher: Zhao Kaihong Zhao Yutian is a beautiful, but quiet girl who has become sluggish and cannot hand in her homework timely and properly. Her downcast condition got our attention, and we decided to go for a home-visiting to help Yutian and learn more about her family’s condition. We hope that with the family’s help, she can catch up with the others as soon as possible. After school, we went to Yutian’s home and her grandma showed us in. It is a very simple, crude home, with only several domestic appliances. Grandma sobbed out Yutian’s situation:a once happy family had been ruined by the parents’ divorce. Yutian’s mother left this family, and her father also went out for job. Her grandparents have to do farm work as well as take care of the family chores. They have limited energy in helping Yutian with her studies. Many times, they found that Yutian crying quietly and shouting for her mother and father. On hearing this, our eyes got wet. Now I realize that what Yutian needs most is our understanding. We should not push her to be a good compliant girl. Instead, we should give her more concern and try to understand her difficulties. Education should be people-oriented, giving more encouragement and correcting her mistakes timely are very helpful. Children of Yutian’s age are very plastic, they are vulnerable to any small harmful things. The ultimate goal of education is to see whether or not our educational methods and content works well with students. Home-visiting is a good chance to understand students and their family conditions without any distance. We give them our attention and care. Communication with their family members is conducive to help students with joint efforts.
