For this extra-curricular activity, we made dumplings! They were filled with delicious leek pork. All of the children were great participants and they were much better dumpling-makers than any of us, the volunteers. In fact, some of us had to learn from the children, and before long they had become our teachers. The children taught us patiently and they demonstrated every step to us. We made a lot of dumplings, but in a comedic scene, the children were reluctant to put their dumplings with ours. They didn't think ours were pretty enough! After an entire morning of hard work, here are our achievements! Most of the participants in today’s handicraft class were students from primary and secondary schools. The theme for the secondary school students was Magical Butterfly, and the theme for the primary school students was Creative Glasses. They were so attentive, and look at their works! Aren't they beautiful? Don't they surprise you? It has been 6 days since we came here. After 5 days, we got to learn more about the situation, about the daily life and students here. With the experience from the previous classes, we felt easier having classes on the environment today, and the schedule arrangement seemed more organized. The classroom atmosphere became lively and orderly, and as the students are between first and sixth grades, it was a challenge to cover all of their interests. When the children mishaved, I would raise my voice and ask questions, or play some interesting videos to attract their attention. After the morning classes, we had a dumpling-making activity that is held once a week. We chatted while making the dumplings in the kitchen. The most amazing thing was that the dumplings made by some boys from fifth and sixth grades were even better than ours. These children may struggle with academics due to various socioeconomic factors that put them at a disadvantage, but their aptitude in performing daily life skills are worth praising. In the evening, we played a cartoon video -- I Love Grey Wolf -- for the students. The humorous speech and exaggerated performance made them laugh. They enjoyed the video so much that they were reluctant to leave at bedtime, so we played half an hour more.We learned a lot from the children. Apart from the cultural understanding, we still have much to learn and transform. Original article written by Huijun Wu, translated by Maggie li and edited by Yanyan Zhang |
