Dear Transparent Fish Fund, My name is Mao Jingzhong and I am a rehabilitation patient at Aziying Rehabilitation Village near Kunming. On behalf of all rehabilitation patients I would like to thank Transparent Fish Fund for buying a three-wheeled motorcycle for us, solving our transportation problem to and from the town. We live on the mountaintop of Aziying and is the only leprosy village around. In order to purchase goods, we have to go to a town 5 km away. We mostly walk over, and because of our disabilities, we often walk for a whole day. Not only do we waste a lot of time walking to and from town, but also when we come back, the ulcers on the heels would worsen. Later, when people from other villages began to plant and bake tobacco here, the road became wider and more cars came around. Sometimes we would hitchhike to go into town, but when we come back we still have to walk. After hearing of our situation, Dr. Liang Ping became very concerned. Last year, with the help of TFISH and Mr. and Mrs. Chao, we were able to buy a three-wheeled motorcycle. Dr. Liang and I went together to the auto market in Kunming and bought it. Because I am relatively more familiar with machines and because my eyesight is okay, I usually drive everyone into town to buy goods. Local villagers saw me and thought I became wealthy and bought a three-wheeled motorcycle. After hearing my explanation, people were very touched and they thought that Mr. and Mrs. Chao were great people and that TFISH is a great organization. Other rehabilitation patients from the leprosy village were particularly touched after hearing of this donation. They all believe that TFISH is an organization that really helps people and they tell others about how great Dr. Liang and TFISH are. There are still four rehabilitation patients here. Last year, one patient passed away. I am the youngest here (at age 58). We are all very thankful to Dr. Liang and her friends, who come and visit us often. They give us medicine and shots, send us clothes and blankets, and also send us rice and other goods. Now they even solved our transportation need through TFISH. We sincerely express our thanks to our friends in the U.S. We are so thankful for your help and welcome you all to visit Aziying Rehabilitation Village! Thanks again Transparent Fish Fund! We sent bags of rice to them and cerebrated the holidays with them. We set out early in the morning from Kunming. Taking into account their habits, we visited Lao Li in A Ziying. Then we went to buy rice together. We bought 26kg bags of rice for them. This is not the first time they have received rice from us. The rice from the government is usually in the form of a 10kg bag. Shalom is sincere to its clients. The lepers invited us to visit their village again. Lao Li doesn’t know English, so he held his paper upside down, but he was still so happy to express his gratitude. We visited 2 villages in one day. One was in the north and another one was in the east. Even though the distance is far, we still enjoy serving our clients. August is the rainy season which makes it rather difficult to visit isolated villages plagued with leprosy in the mountains, especially if you do not have a proper vehicle. On August 3rd, Andrey, a volunteer, and the Devids came to stay in Dali for a few days, hoping to visit a leprosy village during their stay. Since Shalom had been planning to visit Stone Forest Village, and the weather was nice, they decided to visit Stone Forest Village. It start to rain heavily when we almost reached the village, but Andrey is a good driver, and we had a powerful jeep. We finally arrived at the village. The following pictures show our visit. In response to the demand from the lepers in A’ziyin Village, we visited the village again on August 17th. This time, we brought clothes to them. A’ziyin is located in the mountains, and the temperature drops quickly during rainy season. The lepers hoped we could bring thick clothes for them to keep warm. With the help of TFish, Shalom provides a lot of help to leprosy patients living around Kunming. The organization helped to build a solar-powered bathroom for 12 rehabilitation clients living in the Yangquangou village of Yiliang county. We bought a three-wheel motorized cart for 5 rehabilitation clients in A Ziying, Kunming. We will soon provide rice for clients in the Volcano Village of Chuxiong prefecture. Our goal is to learn how to provide better services and help for the rehabilitation of our clients. We recently received 30 new applications, so we traveled to Jinsuokang village, 100 kilometers away from Kunming. The place is a mountainous area with high altitude. The locals grow maize and potatoes. There are over 30 lepers and the natural village has about 100 people. We walked about 3 kilometers to reach the village. The village is seldom visited, so people were excited to see us and gathered around us. Here are some pictures of our visit. Because it was our first time going to this place and it was raining, it was late afternoon when we arrived. The volunteers tried their best to provide services to the lepers who offered potatoes to us to express their gratitude. When we were leaving, they asked us about our next visit. They said that the rice is not growing so they hope we can provide 2 bags of rice for each household every year. In July, our staff accompanied Wang Jiafu, a leper in the Yangquangou village, to his hometown and stayed there for 2 days to assist his rehabilitation in the village. We will visit a leper village in the Stone Forest in August. This village is also seldom visited by people. They hope we can assist them with free medial exams. We are also plan to visit a leper village near the A Ziying village. 2 visits were organized in June. One was to the Yimen leprosy village and another was to visit Lao Yang, a rehabilitation client in Songming. Liang Ping brought medicine for each of the clients and gave them instructions. We were surprised during our visit to Lao Yang. We saw black goats before we met Lao Yang. The villagers told us that Lao Yang and some of his relatives raised money and purchased black goats with almost 1000 yuan. We were also surprised to see a fridge in his room. He explained it’s summer and it’s not easy to keep food fresh, so his relatives and friends raised enough money for a fridge for him. He is enjoying the modern life, too. We thought a lot. Lao Yang life in the village has relieved a lot of life's presure. We brought medicine when we visited the place. Lao Yang enjoys welfare from the local government, which has improved his life. We hope the lives of all our patients living in rural areas can be improved. We hope they also enjoy the results brought by economic development. May is a rainy season and Liang Ping, the person in charge, is about to take an examination, so the visit to the leprosy village has not been organized yet. Currently our work is focused on a solar energy project at the Yangjuangou leprosy village. We are trying to complete it as soon as possible, so that the rehabilitation clients can use it earlier. We have also been working on installing lights and are waiting for the wiring to be finalized. All of this was organized by Andre, an American volunteer, who was assisted by Liang Ping. After the relevant work had been done, Liang Ping and Andre examined the project on May 23rd. They then installed a special-made pump for the clients. March is a warm season where flowers blossom abundantly in China. For leprosy villages, especially the project sites of The Shalom in Yunnan province, spring seems even warmer and pleasant. The rehabilitation clients here not only share the love from Shalom volunteers, but also the love from the USA, Japan, and India. They brought money, goods and love for the clients. In the month full of love, the Shalom built solar-powered bathrooms, sponsored children who dropped out of school, and purchased a three-wheel motorbike for the clients in Yiliang. The Shalom will complete the installation for the power supply and pipes for the solar-powered bathrooms as soon as possible, so that people can soon enough enjoy a commodity as simple as a hot shower. Led by the grace of God, volunteers from China and abroad visited a leprosy village in Yimen of Yunnan Province before Christmas. They celebrated the holiday with over 20 rehabilitation clients (lepers). Considering that most of them are old and weak, and the weather in the mountain areas is extremely chilly, the volunteers provided electric blankets to each of the clients and an electric heater to every 5 households. The volunteers also donated a lot of clothing for winter use as well as food to them. It was the fourth time that one of the volunteers visited Yimen. She was so excited to see her old friend, the wife of the village chief. Both of them greeted each other with a warm hug. Some volunteers helped to clean up the wound and coated it with ointment. Other volunteers handed out gifts, cleaned clothes for the villagers, and chatted with them. The volunteers also performed plays with teachers from International School for the clients. All of them enjoyed a Christmas full of love and happiness. At the beginning of September, Laoxu, a patient of Zhushan leprosy rehabilitation village told us that his disease prevented him from harvesting his corn. Thus, we organized an 8 member team to help Laoxu with corn-picking on September 9th. At first everyone was very excited and actively went for picking corns. Because we lacked experience, many were cut by sharp leaves or became ticklish from the natural corn powders. However, no one complained about it, and two hours later, we collected all the corn in his land. Though the work was hard and tiring, we got our reward from Laoxu’s smile. We gave him anti-ulcer medicines and helped him change dressings. People with leprosy are sent to isolated places without families or friends to support them emotionally of physically. According to Transparent Fish Fund’s budget and practical situation of the leprosy rehabilitation village, there are two main focuses this month: 1) retracing the patients’ conditions who have taken the drug MEDIHONEY, and 2) helping Dr. Higuchi from Japan make his visits to leprosy patients requiring eye protection treatment. On June 9th, we took presents to Yilian, a rehabilitation village in Zhushan. We divided ourselves into two groups—one changed dressings for anabrosis patients while the other went peach-picking under Laoli’s guidance. |
