People with leprosy are sent to isolated places without families or friends to support them emotionally of physically. They are abandoned and forgotten by society. The Shalom Leprosy Compassion Ministry has a heart for these people and organizes groups of volunteers to travel to leprosy villages and provide medical, living, and psychological assistance.
According to Transparent Fish Fund’s budget and practical situation of the leprosy rehabilitation village, there are two main focuses this month: 1) retracing the patients’ conditions who have taken the drug MEDIHONEY, and 2) helping Dr. Higuchi from Japan make his visits to leprosy patients requiring eye protection treatment.
On June 9th, we took presents to Yilian, a rehabilitation village in Zhushan. We divided ourselves
into two groups—one changed dressings for anabrosis patients while the other
went peach-picking under Laoli’s guidance.
On June 16th, we accompanied the Indian friends who also visited Yilian.
From June 20th to the 22th, we accompanied Dr. Higuchi during his mobile treatment for
21 patients. He brought safety goggles and eye-washing patches from Japan and
patiently taught the patients how to use them. We also invited 4 rehabilitees to celebrate
the Dragon Boat Festival with us.
This month’s work is very distinctive. We organized 3 visits for foreign volunteers, 24 people in total, and we are proud that our family members and friends actually visited rehabilitation villages. We hope more people
from Kunming and other parts of China will care and communicate more with the rehabilitees in these villages.
In July, we will adjust our schedule. We will visit Denglu rehabilitation village and Honghe Hani nationality village.
