Computer Training Fundraiser for 2 More Vietnamese Orphanages

10/29/2015

Preparing Orphans for the Job Market

There are 2.1 million marginalized orphans in Vietnam. Some of them were abandoned outside, discovered, and brought to an orphanage. Others were brought by their parents to the orphanage because of poverty. Many orphans have had their parents die. Most of these children will likely spend their entire childhood in this institutionalized setting, until they have to leave when they're 19. And then what will happen to them? Less than 1% of institutionalized orphans in Vietnam qualify for university. So it's important for these children to get equipped for life after the orphanage and the tech-dependent job market they will face.

The Fundraiser: Programs for 2 More Orphanages in Vietnam

Our goal is to raise $7500 to bring computer education programs into 2 new orphanages.

At the beginning of 2015, Transparent Fish Fund provided a grant that enabled Orphan Impact to expand from 10 partner orphanages to 18. These partner orphanages are selected because of their commitment to continue providing our education program for their children. Our goal is to partner with 2 more orphanages by the end of the year.

Your contribution will help provide the computers and equipment needed to implement this program, which is the platform for impact and change. Here are examples of what you can give toward.

Orphanages 19 and 20

This fundraiser will help launch programs in partner orphanages #19 and #20 in Vietnam. One orphanage is located in Khanh Hoa Province, and another orphanage is in Dong Nai Province. Both orphanages are remotely located where children have few, if any, opportunities after leaving the orphanage. Between the 2 orphanages, more than 60 children will participate in the classes. The children have been evaluated so we have initial baseline assessments. We will evaluate them again to provide impact information to all donors on the training’s effectiveness. For both orphanages, this will represent the children's first ongoing exposure to computer learning.

The Classes and Curriculum

Classes are scheduled to launch on November 7-8th and November 14-15th. They will be taught by an Orphan Impact teacher and 12 volunteers, who will operate in 4 teams of 3. The curriculum will start with the standard "Developing an Independent Computer User" course and then year by year cycle through Collaborative Learning, Project Based Learning, Core Competencies, and Career Development.

Through our classes, orphans learn an array of skills, including:
  • Typing
  • Searching the Internet
  • Using email and Skype
  • Creating charts and graphs
  • Making videos and documentaries

We believe it is crucial for the children to develop 21st century skills as they prepare for their lives outside the orphanage.

We’ve seen first-hand how excited the children are to learn. For example, a little boy sent his first email across the room at school. When his friend received the message, the boy jumped up and screamed with joy.
We do not believe that by simply bringing computers and Internet into Vietnamese orphanages we will magically help each child to be successful. But we do believe that with the right balance of fun and challenge, mentoring, encouragement, and discipline—as well as a carefully planned curriculum and properly trained teachers—we can begin to help the children develop many of the crucial skills they are currently missing to be prepared for today's fast moving and tech-focused society. With each new orphanage partner, we try to ensure the orphanage leadership is interested in working with us to help work towards these goals.

About our Field Partner: Orphan Impact

Since 2009 Orphan Impact has been delivering valuable computer and internet training to orphans throughout Vietnam. To date, over 1,500 orphan children in more than 25 orphanages have participated in this important education program. . Partnering with employees from tech companies like Intel, Team4Tech, VMware, Box, and Facebook has ensured that Orphan Impact is using the most relevant and up-to-date material in the curriculum and weekly lessons. Children learn to use computers and the Internet to design, create, store, share, consume, and communicate information about the world around them. Alongside the important skill training, children gain self-confidence and find motivation to look beyond the orphanage with hope.
