5/12/2012

MEET HUY! Huy is 14 years old and has lived with EB (Epidermolysis Bullosa) for his entire life. Huy's mother is as much of a hero as Huy is! She spends between 3 and 5 hours a day

Administrating not only EB bathing, blister attention, gentle wrapping and very tenderly wrapping his very painful wounds. The whole our brave little friend is in excruciating pain and does belt out a number of screams, swear words, feelings of frustration, anger and after it’s all done, he apologies, and expresses love, appreciation , gratitude and comfort until the next wound care session.

Huy's leg & Huy's Arm

HOW has been friends with Huy for a while now and I personally consider him one of my mentor’s in life. He has so much insight and reminds us all to be grateful for what we do have, how we can live our life if we chose to focus on the small things and not be afraid to tackle the large and scary things in life, and never ever to let ANYTHNG get in our way!

Since knowing Huy, we have shared many conversations, blood (literally) sweat and tears and also a lot of laughter and thanks to Mr. Dat, some very wonderful conversations.

Thanks to Huy and his mother’s generosity and openness, Mr. Dat, and myself have had the opportunity  to introduce many grateful  and wonderful, caring people to Huy. After meeting him their life too is changed in a way one would have never imagined. His new friends are so enamored with is insight and down to earth attitude about life at his young 14 years of life, as well as his amazing sense of humor,  they feel the same gift I feel every time we spend even an hour or so with him before he is tired and must rest.

Huy on the bottom right, proudly representing Vientam for International EB Awareness week! We are so proud of him!

Huy’s story is long and we will continue to update you as to his situation but for now, you should know he has had several blood transfusions, and his wound care is very costly and time consuming. HOW has assisted in wound care supplies thanks do wonderful donors and kind foundations we hope to continue to help Huy and his family care for him and find ways to get him to a place where he can leave his home, see the world, listen to music, see the sunshine, and even eat ice cream.

When I asked Huy if he could have a dream (which he had never even given a thought to before) but when pushed to think about it and discuss it when I cam back, his response was “I want to become a Monk, and help children living with EB to feel

better and to not give up on a cure”.  That is Huy!  Now you can start to see why this 14-year-old boy is my hero. :

Below please find  a link to view a video of Huy * WARNING ... THIS IS VERY DIFFICULT TO WATCH but a very important  video of Huy receiving EB wound care treatment from his mother, and a talk with Hillary Brown and Mr. Dat from Helping Orphans Worldwide, HOW.
