Little Red Scarf: March 2012 Update

The following is a monthly update from Little Red Scarf, an NGO that helps impoverished children with congenital heart disease obtain medical care. 21 children have recently recovered from their operations (most were discharged in November of 2011), and post-op phone calls and visits are now over. Let's look at these children’s conditions now!

276 Wen Hua: 10/27/2011 discharged

The father said Wen Hua is in the nursery now. At school, she is very obedient and loves  to learn. Two days ago she got cold after the first postoperative care, but after taking some medicine she got better, and her sickness was not that serious.

278 Yue Yue: 11/10/2011 discharged

Yue Yue is one year and two months old. She has begun to learn how to walk, and knows how to say “baba”, and “mama”. After discharge, she had a cold 3-4 times, but it was not very serious after she took medicine.

JiRun is now 1 year old already. He knows how to say “mother”, but he still can’t walk. His father says he eats and sleeps well. He got a cold once after the surgery, but now he is okay and still needs to take a good rest.

His father says Yingying is in the nursery and is well behaved. After the surgery, he had never gotten a cold until two days ago but after he took the medicine, he was fine. Now the family is very happy.

Yangyang got a cold 3 times after the surgery. One time he had to get an infusion, and the other two times he took some medicine. After the discharge, he gained 2 pounds within four months. His appetite was very good, but his mother said that his condition is still weak and still needs to take more time to recover.

His father said that after the surgery ,Yuanyuan did not get a cold and ate well. His weight of 21 pounds has not changed, and his father intends to take child to go to kindergarten next year.

His father said that after the surgery, he gained 3 pounds and does not breathe so hard while walking anymore. He is in good shape, and next semester Zhi peng will be in pre-school.

LY-97 Hai Nan: 11/21/2011 discharged

Hai Nan's postoperative recovery went well because his grandmother is taking good care of him. But the his vision cannot be restored, and he will occasionally have convulsions. He is still in need of further examination and treatment.

LY-116 Jiande: 11/14/2011 discharged

Discharged over 4 months ago, Jiande did not get a cold at all and is still doing very well. The family has begun to get busy at this time, so Jiande does not go to school. His father just lets him do some light farm work. Jiande also plans to learn how to use excavators or the forklift. His father said that after this busy time, he will help him find a school.

After getting discharged, A Xi Ya is obviously getting fat than before. The father said next semester he will let the child start with pre-school. Jia li is very obedient; her body condition is good, and she no longer catches colds.

His dad said Xiao Hu is 1 year old now. He cannot talk, but can walk a dozen paces. After the surgery, he got a cold one time, but after taking medicine is doing fine. His dad said this guy can eat a lot, and has also gained lots weight.

The father said he has already been in elementary school for a year. He is very naughty, and every day he loves to play and not study. After he came out from hospital, he didn’t get a cold at all. School is close to the home, and walking is only about 10 minutes. Chen Hui goes to school by himself.

Her mother said Jingjing has recovered very well, and she can help families do a lot of work. This semester Jingjing has no classes and intends to go medical school for the next semester.

Today is Xiaoting’s third birthday. His father works outside the city and his grandmother works in the field. After the postoperative, Xiaoting gained some weight, but always coughs and sometimes cries at night. Now is a busy time for farms, but his mother is planning to take him to Lanzhou to do cleft palate surgery in September.

Qingqing is in 2nd grade, and the school is quite far away from home. By walking an hour to school, Xiaoqing’s condition is getting much better. Sometimes, she will walk back with her classmate. Her family sees Xiaoqing just like other normal kids and now is very happy.

Jian qiang is in 6th grade now because he dropped out of school for a half year. His grades are towards the middle-high among the class. After the surgery, he never got a cold and gained 4 pounds. School is very close to his home, and Jian qiang goes back and forth to the school every day by himself.

Xiaoxi has already gone to elementary school in 1st grade because she likes to go to school. The school is about half an hour away from her home. Sometimes she will go with her friends. There is no need for her family to take care of her. After the surgery, she didn’t get a cold and gained five pounds.

Her father said she is doing very well after surgery and has only gotten a cold once. She is now getting fatter than before. He plans to let her go to kindergarten, so this way, he can feel better about going to work outside.

The father said Xiaopeng attends Kindergarten small classes and is a good listener. After postoperative care, he got a cold one time. The family feels a lot more at ease than before.

His mother says Ya-nan is in pre-school and is now in good health with a good appetite. Every morning when he wakes up, his first sentence is “I am hungry.” One month ago he gained 2 pounds, and after the surgery, he got a cold twice. But overall, his condition is good. His mother said that whenever people ask about his condition, he always talks about Little Red Scarf.
