Little Red Scarf is in Lanzhou, Gansu province and provides financial support and encouragement to children suffering from congenital heart disease. In addition, they provide families with post-operative care and help the children sustain a healthy lifestyle.
Honghong is one of our recipients of Little Red Scarf and was referred to us through a relative. She lives outside of the city and while conditions of the town are better than most rural villages we visit, her family is in poverty. Both her parents are mentally ill and her father works contract positions for a construction team. Last year, he earned a total of about $800 a year. Her home is made of mud and used to be a pigsty.
Hongyan also has two brothers. One of her brothers has eye problem, but the family could not afford the examinations in hospital. The youngest brother is over 1. Her mother has to stay at home to take care of the children and housework. They also grow vegetables and corn. However it is difficult to keep the farm when her father is holding a construction job and her mother is taking care of the three kids.
At 12:00, Honghong arrived at home. It takes half an hour to school by bike. She recovers well after the operation. She is a little bit different from other family members. Luckily, she has a room of her own. The room is not big, but neat and clean. She does homework at her room every day.
Honghong is in grade 8 and she did study plan. She became confidence after the operation. There are 60 students in her class and she is ranked 20 for the exam results. She does great at school. She attends PE class and rides bike to school. She also helps to do some housework. Honghong’s dream is to go to an ideal university as her cousin. We hope she will fulfil her dream and change her fate and the situation of the family.
