Ju Hua was diagnosed with congenital heart disease at the age of 41 years old. With the help from Little Red Scarf, a successful surgery was completed in 2012. In 2013, her oldest son was also diagnosed with congenital heart disease. His surgery was funded by a serious illness relief project.
Ju Hua’s father and mother-in law are both 80 years old. They have poor health. The father in-law has been suffering from chronic bronchitis for years. He coughs constantly and needs to take medication on a daily basis. He takes medicine as if it was a meal, but it does not help his disease much. His medical expense was least 2000 RMB a year. If the disease worsens and hospitalization was required, the cost would be even higher.
The two children are very sensible. Although their schools are far from home, they never let their parents to worry about them. It takes 20 RMB to pay for the round trip ticket to go home. In order to save money, they take turns going home. Sometimes, they even just go home once a month or even once every other month. In winter time, they would bring their mother’s homemade buns to school trying to save part of their cost of living. In summer, it is difficult to keep the food fresh, so they need to buy buns and noodles for their meals. Before their oldest son’s surgery, they could not bear to let the children spend money on food. The noodles they ate were the dry noodles pressed by machine. They tried their best to bring buns to the village so can be picked up by their children after school.
Ever since the oldest son’s surgery, his health has never recovered fully. Ju Hua and her husband try to improve the children’s nutrition; they would spend 50 RMB a week to buy fresh noodles and buns for them to eat. They can also supplement their meals by buying fresh vegetables. Now is their growing time. If they are lacking nutrition now, it will be very difficult to make it up later on. The oldest son is doing his exam this year, and the younger son is in second year of junior high school. The rent for the year is 2000 RMB. If the oldest son gets into high school this year, the cost of living will continue to increase. They have four acres of land. Each acre grows potato, wheat, corn and rapeseed. These crops are the necessities for farmers.
