Poverty Leads to Arranged Marriage
Yapeng’s parents had an arranged marriage as part of an agreement with another family. The two families traded daughters so each son could get a wife. Because they are very poor, Yapeng’s uncle had to marry Yapeng’s aunt in order for his mother to marry his father. Yapeng’s younger uncle is now over forty and still cannot find a woman to marry.
Father Born Deaf
Yapeng’s father has been deaf from birth. He works for the local construction crew when he is not busy tending his land. But because he has neither skill nor education, he can only do hard physical labor, such as lifting steel cables and moving concrete.
Each Family Member Contributes
The grandparents are eighty years old, but are healthy. The mother and grandmother braid straw during their spare time to help support the family. The finished straw braids are the raw material for straw hats and other straw handicrafts and are also cheap to purchase. The older sister is going to technical school in Zhangye. To minimize the family’s burden, all of her costs are paid for by her uncle. The older brother is still going to elementary school and can go to and return from school with Yapeng. The two brothers can take care of each other.
Farming and Other Work
The family owns over three acres of mountainous land, cultivating enough crops such as potatoes, sesame, rapeseed, corn, and wheat to feed the family for a year. During the off-season, the uncle and father do miscellaneous work to earn around 20,000 yuan, the main source of income for the family. The daily income is 55 yuan.
Yapeng’s Continued Health Challenges
Yapeng is now a first grader. Two years after surgery, he is a lot taller and laughs a lot more. He is even able to run! Despite this great progress, Yapeng still faces serious health challenges. Because his right hand has a congenital malformation, he can only write with his left hand. And due to malnutrition and poor heart conditions post-surgery, Yapeng has continued to take medication. The child’s body is still relatively weak.
Needs Nourishment to Escape Poverty
The family hopes to feed the child more nutritious meals so he can stop taking medicine. Only a healthy body can help this family gradually escape poverty.
Will you help provide Yapeng with the nutrition he needs to be healthy and escape poverty?
