Little Red Scarf is in Lanzhou, Gansu province and provides financial support and encouragement to children suffering from congenital heart disease. In addition, they provide families with post-operative care and help the children sustain a healthy lifestyle.
In March of 2011, Qi Ming was admitted by the hospital because of congenital heart disease. With the help of Little Red Scarf, he was accepted surgery. He was 13 and in grade 5. In April of 2012, a year after the surgery, the staff of LRS gave the scholarship donated from the USA to Qi Ming’s father, hoping to alleviate the burden of the family.
In December, 2013, LRS visited Qi Ming’s family and witnessed the life of Qi Ming and his father. It was cold in December in the north. Knowing we were coming, Qi Ming’s father walked about 1 hour to meet us at the station. When we saw the familiar face again, we found more wrinkles which had added by the burden of life.
After 20 minutes ride, we arrived at Qi Ming’s home. Qi Ming has not come from school. We chatted with his father. The room seemed a little disorder, for his father alone to take care of it. There was some leftovers in the kitchen which had gone moldy.
The usurious loan for the treatment of Qi Ming’s mother was paid off. A heavy rain collapsed the old house 2 years ago, so they had to borrow money to repair the house.
20,000 RMB, half of the loans, used for house repairing has been paid off. The crops were not growing well due to the rain. Qi Ming’s father did woodwork and sold the products in the market. His brother and sister have been working in the cities. His sister suffers from gynaopathy, so the family has to give her some of the money.
Qi Ming was back from school at 12:30. He is 16 and became a lad and is taller than his father. We gave them rice and milk. Generally, Qi Ming’s sister-in-law would leave lunch for him, but her child got sick last night. Qi Ming had to cook noodles for himself this noon. There’s no vegetables, so he had to mix the noodles with spicy oil, vinegar and salt. It has been 3 years since the surgery, and the wound was healing well.
Taking 5-10 minutes’ rest after the lunch, he had to go to school. The school is about 5 kilometers away from the home. It takes about 1 hour’s walk. We talked with the family about Qi Ming’s current life.
Qi Ming is in grade 7 and does average among his 56 classmates. He had to go to school before dawn at 6 o’clock along a rough mountainous road every day.
At 13:00, we decided to go together with Qi Ming to the way to his school. Today, Qi Ming did not take a rest and went with us after lunch.
Qi Ming is at school. We wish an improving life for him and his father. We also hope Qi Ming can achieve his aspiration—to get into senior high school.
