Mid-Year Grant Report 2016: HOW Perpetual Giving Program

Grant Results: April - July 2016

We were able to provide 25 families with pigs, chickens, and ducks, and some of them also received cows. The livestock gave the beneficiaries a source of income that allowed them to provide food and education for their families. Some were also able to pay for medical care.

First Pay It Forward Update

The first recipient in our group, Mrs. Ty, was the first to have her cow deliver a healthy male calf. She chose to pay forward her calf to Mrs. Lai, because Mrs. Lai's family suffered a financial loss when they lost their cow to an unexpected illness. Mrs. Lai's family had taken a $1,000 USD loan to purchase the cow, but it died suddenly only after 3 months. The family still owed the bank the remaining balance. Mrs. Lai was very happy to accept the baby calf, as this gift will help provide an income to fill the void left by her deceased cow. They will raise the male calf to adulthood, then sell it and purchase a female calf so that she can breed more cows to sell for meat.

Ms. Thuong Update

Ms. Tuong is a single mother of three children. She was born with a facial deformity that left her with much difficulty eating and speaking. She has pulled her family out of poverty from the gifts of 1 cow, 1 pig, 30 chickens and 20 ducks. Her cow is currently 6 months pregnant. Through the sale of eggs, baby chickens, ducks and piglets, Ms. Thuong is able to send her son Thang to school. She hopes that by getting an education her children can avoid the repeated cycle of poverty that she had fallen into.

Mrs. Gai Update

Mrs. Gai's family is one of the most unfortunate among our group of recipients. Her oldest son fell from a tree while working in November of 2015. They had to sell their home and livestock to help pay for her son's medical bills and ongoing care. Her son broke several bones in his spine and is now a quadriplegic. The entire family was so grateful to HOW and TFISH for the gifts of a cow, a pig and 25 chickens. These gifts will help the family generate much needed money to cover ongoing medical costs and allow the family to survive day-to-day by putting food on their table. ​

Educational Field Trip Update

Our core group of 25 families, who have received livestocks as gifts, know enough about raising livestock to keep their animals alive. But we wanted to give everyone the opportunity to learn more about caring for their livestock, so we took them on a field trip to an established farm where experienced farmers shared their knowledge, answered questions and shared successful farming techniques. 

The group learned more about pre and post-natal care for their pigs in order to avoid miscarriages.

​They were also given tips on how to treat their poultry when they get sick. The farming experts gave them free samples and names of certain medicine to help treat their poultry population when they come down with illnesses that can wipe out the entire flock.
